Protecting Us From Pictures: Gender And Support For Legal Restrictions On Pornography, Elizabeth Lynne Chivers Jan 2004

Protecting Us From Pictures: Gender And Support For Legal Restrictions On Pornography, Elizabeth Lynne Chivers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Research and debate concerning pornography has been controversial, primarily focusing on the perceived harmful effects. The current study addresses support for legal restrictions and the effect of gender on this support. Based on the internalization of gender roles, perspectives, and identities through socialization, gender is constructed differently for men and women. Because this socialization is constructed around an oppositional male-female dichotomy, men and women experience the world differently. While there have been previous research addressing gender differences, the gendered nature of attitudes merits further study. The current study is based on data collected for 451 undergraduate students at the University …

Morbidity: Poetry And Prose, Robert P. Hansen Jan 2004

Morbidity: Poetry And Prose, Robert P. Hansen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Freudian concept of thanatos, the death instinct, plays a pivotal role in the following collection of fiction and poetry, and also in the nonfictional introductory chapter. In the tradition of Poe, unreliable narrators of questionable morality are used to explore, through fiction, the psychological characteristics of this death instinct, while in the poetry, the subject matter and perspective has been strongly influenced by Ai's work. Each story reflects in some way death, destruction, or criminal activity, and, as might be expected, dead bodies tend to show up in various and sundry places, sometimes where they would be expected, and …

Rhetorical Analysis Of Interactive Texts: Okinawa War Memorial And Presidential Speech, Takayuki Kato Jan 2004

Rhetorical Analysis Of Interactive Texts: Okinawa War Memorial And Presidential Speech, Takayuki Kato

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In order to develop an understanding of reciprocal relations of multiple rhetorical texts, this study seeks to analyze the interaction between an Okinawa war memorial titled "The Cornerstone of Peace" and a Presidential speech Clinton delivered at that site. This study attempts to investigate how textual meanings are shaped between themselves, apart from rhetors' original intention. The focus on the function, rather than the intention, of rhetorical texts, thus calls for the theoretical reconsideration of the conventional rhetorical analysis, in which critics analyze how a rhetor responds to a particular situation. The need to attend to the dynamic formation of …

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

In 1997 Congress called for the director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), in consultation with the Secretary of Education, to convene a national panel to assess the status of research-based knowledge, including the effectiveness of various approaches to teaching children to read (NICHD, 2000a, p. 1). The resulting 14- member National Reading Panel (NRP or Panel) included reading researchers, representatives of colleges of education, educational administrators, a classroom teacher, a parent, and a medical doctor (Yatvin, 2002).
