This correlational study associated data on children enrolled in individualized educational plans in their K-12 schools (IEP) and an algorithm-calculated score of neurotoxins at contaminated sites located in each school district. The study also mapped and projected the correlations using Geographical Information System (GIS) technology. These data were populated in ArcMap 10.5 (a GIS software) for generating maps and data to conduct geospatial analysis. A total of 1 Superfund site and 39 CERCLA sites were identified as contaminated sites for this analysis. The majority of contaminants were heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium. The mean toxic score …

A preregistered meta-analysis, including 244 effect sizes from 85 field audits and 361,645 individual job applications, tested for gender bias in hiring practices in female-stereotypical and gender-balanced as well as male-stereotypical jobs from 1976 to 2020. A “red team” of independent experts was recruited to increase the rigor and robustness of our meta-analytic approach. A forecasting survey further examined whether laypeople (n = 499 nationally representative adults) and scientists (n = 312) could predict the results. Forecasters correctly anticipated reductions in discrimination against female candidates over time. However, both scientists and laypeople overestimated the continuation of bias against female candidates. …

Re-Examining, Re-Empowering: The Effect Of Contextualizing Testimonial Theatre On Spect-Actors, Felicia Owusu-Ansah
Re-Examining, Re-Empowering: The Effect Of Contextualizing Testimonial Theatre On Spect-Actors, Felicia Owusu-Ansah
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
To be empowered, freed from rejection, silence and trauma, one may have no choice but to speak up. But how does the silenced speak in the presence of the oppressor? At this point, theatre (of testimony) became the most useful tool to break the silence among irregular returnees in Akuma, Ghana. This qualitative study article reports on the healing and empowering effects of Testimonial Theatre on spect-actors during its use for dissemination of research findings to the researched community. It aims to show how Testimonial Theatre’s effects of compassion and empathy led to the resilience of human essence, breaking silence, …
O Mecanismo Da Empatia No Teatro Fórum, Ali Mansouri
O Mecanismo Da Empatia No Teatro Fórum, Ali Mansouri
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
The Mechanism Of Empathy In Forum Theater, Ali Mansouri
The Mechanism Of Empathy In Forum Theater, Ali Mansouri
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
Even though the concept of “Empathy” was mentioned in the earliest texts about performance, there has always been a dispute among theatre theorists in different eras regarding its impact on the audience. Although some have considered empathy as the basis of the theatre, others viewed it as a dangerous ground that can result in inappropriate and unhealthy feelings in the audience. Recent findings of neuroscientists have revealed that empathy (with both real people and fictional characters) is inevitable for human beings, and its unconscious mechanism exists in every mentally healthy person. I believe that this inherent ability can allow us …

Usando O Teatro Aplicado Para A Cura Coletiva E O Tratamento Do Luto Na Sala De Aula, Sarah Fahmy
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

Using Applied Theatre For Collective Healing And Grief Processing In The Classroom, Sarah Fahmy
Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed
At times when our mental health is equally as strained as our students, applied theatre may ground and guide us to support us turn our collective trauma into action and enable students to envision their individual and collective healing. In this article, I reflect on the process of devising C(U)VID-19: Reflections from Students of the Pandemic, a 50-minute, multi-disciplinary virtual performance, conceived and produced in under two weeks by the students in my theatre for non-majors class in 2021. I share examples of how applied theatre enabled students to lead with empathy and develop friendships while authoring their own …

Graduate Research Project Guide: Secondary Data Analysis, Sei-Young Lee, Siyon Rhee
Faculty Book Gallery
This Open Educational Resource (OER) book presents a step-by-step guide to help graduate students complete a Master’s thesis or a graduate research project paper for those who conduct research using a secondary dataset. Almost all graduate programs require a Master’s thesis/graduate research project as a graduate requirement. However, it is not easy for students to complete a thesis/research project since it requires a mastery of knowledge and skills through the integration of research methodology and statistics. Both research methodology and statistics are not easy subjects for students as well as researchers. Nonetheless, books or other published materials that combine both …

Packets-To-Prediction: An Unobtrusive Mechanism For Identifying Coarse-Grained Sleep Patterns With Wifi Mac Layer Traffic, Dheryta Jaisinghani, Nishtha Phutela
Faculty Publications
A good night’s sleep is of the utmost importance for the seamless execution of our cognitive capabilities. Unfortunately, the research shows that one-third of the US adult population is severely sleep deprived. With college students as our focused group, we devised a contactless, unobtrusive mechanism to detect sleep patterns, which, contrary to existing sensor-based solutions, does not require the subject to put on any sensors on the body or buy expensive sleep sensing equipment. We named this mechanism Packets-to-Predictions(P2P) because we leverage the WiFi MAC layer traffic collected in the home and university environments to predict “sleep” and “awake” periods. …

Epidemiological Characteristics Of School Playground Injuries, Eric A. Kennedy, Drew A. Filchner, Zane D. Patterson, Heather M. Olsen

Reports of children’s play-related injuries have remained stagnant according to epidemiology studies of the past 3 decades. This article provides a unique look into the context of playground injuries within an entire school district, demonstrating the prevalence of these injuries. This study reports that playgrounds are the leading location of school injury, comprising one-third of all elementary school injuries. This study found that while head/neck injuries were the most commonly injured body region within the playground environment, the proportion of head/neck injuries decreased with age, whereas the proportion of extremity injuries increased with age. At least 1 upper extremity injury …
