Play Therapy, Melissa A. Hardman
Play Therapy, Melissa A. Hardman
Graduate Research Papers
Play therapy techniques are valuable tools for a variety of professionals who work with children. One need not be a registered play therapist to implement play techniques when working with child clients. There are many types of clients that would benefit from play therapy. There are several different theoretical approaches, but the researcher chose to focus on Adlerian Play Therapy, Client-Centered Play Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Play Therapy, and Psychodynamic Play Therapy. The paper considers the best location to implement play techniques, by urging the counselor to be aware of the setting's location within the building, ease of cleaning, available space, and …
Implementation Of Cooperative Groups And Single Gender Classrooms, Kara Haugen
Implementation Of Cooperative Groups And Single Gender Classrooms, Kara Haugen
Graduate Research Papers
The Dr. Walter Cunningham School for Excellence has three single-sex classrooms in place today. It has one all girls classroom at the second grade level, one all boys classroom at the second grade level, and one very unique all boys classroom at the first grade level. This classroom is unique because the teacher and the students will follow with each other all the way through fifth grade.
Since this is the first year of implementing single-sex classrooms there are many educators who need more clarification on this approach to education. In the following pages the researcher focuses on how the …
The Implications Of Anger And School Violence, Ronda Hilbert
The Implications Of Anger And School Violence, Ronda Hilbert
Graduate Research Papers
A series of highly publicized school shootings in the Untied States generated the misperception of an epidemic of school violence. Fears of school violence stimulated an ill-advised expansion of zero tolerance school discipline policies and the widespread distribution of profiles or warning signs of potentially dangerous students for use by school administrators. This paper presents that little is known about student threats of violence, although students in special education tend to commit disciplinary violations at a higher rate than regular education students according to some studies. Threats of violence pose a dilemma for educators, who must balance federal requirements, the …
Meeting The Accountability Challenge In Guided Reading Instruction, Rachelle E. Jensen
Meeting The Accountability Challenge In Guided Reading Instruction, Rachelle E. Jensen
Graduate Research Papers
The demands for accountability and mandated consequences require a balanced and thoughtful approach to literacy instruction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the opinions of teachers regarding the use of guided reading and how it benefits the need to meet the accountability challenge. Seven teachers were chosen to take part in this interviewing process. All of the participants' responses focused on a global theme of accountability. Teachers explained that they were more accountable for their students' instruction through three key factors: accountability through guided reading, accountability through conversations with colleagues, and time based accountability.

An Effective Leader : A Reflective Essay, Darin Jones
An Effective Leader : A Reflective Essay, Darin Jones
Graduate Research Papers
Leadership can be accomplished in multiple ways: vocally, by example, or by a combination of the two. Any choice is.acceptable, but in order to be an effective leader you need to choose a method and believe in it. Personally, I lead by example. I work to be a vocal leader by praising in public. It is important to let students see it is all right to tell someone they did a very good job.
Setting good examples for students is key to leadership. Many times this is done by responses to situations. Reaction is quite often done without thought and …
Could Distributed Curriculum Improve The Itbs Scores Of Non-Proficient Students?, Lesli Lancey-Wensman
Could Distributed Curriculum Improve The Itbs Scores Of Non-Proficient Students?, Lesli Lancey-Wensman
Graduate Research Papers
Will the use of a distributed math curriculum improve the outcomes of students who consistently score between the 20th and 30th percentile on ITBS tests? That question and others are addressed in this paper. The purpose of this study was to determine what strategies were being used for math instruction, if those strategies were working for all students, and whether a distributed curriculum would improve the math outcomes of students with disabilities who were not working at their current grade level.

Exploring The Half-Life Of Internet Footnotes, Michael Bugeja, Daniela V. Dimitrova
Exploring The Half-Life Of Internet Footnotes, Michael Bugeja, Daniela V. Dimitrova
Iowa Journal of Communication
Vanishing online references are becoming a problem for scholars. This exploratory study examines use of online citations, focusing on 2003 AEJMC conference papers accepted by the Communication Technology and Policy division. Authors analyze papers using URL reference addresses in bibliographies and document some 40% of online citations being unavailable a year later. Results show that .edu is the most stable domain. Error messages for "dead" URL addresses also are explored. Finally authors offer much needed recommendations for researchers who use Internet citations.
Unique And Ordinary Problems In Internet Research: Research Ethics, The Law, And Power Politics In Institutional Review, Mark D. Johns
Unique And Ordinary Problems In Internet Research: Research Ethics, The Law, And Power Politics In Institutional Review, Mark D. Johns
Iowa Journal of Communication
While some regard Internet as public texts, much of interest to researchers is actually human social interaction, subject to institutional review. The law leaves much to the discretion of institutional review boards (IRBs). Reviews are influenced by concerns for protecting institutions from liability, negative publicity, or scrutiny from funding sources. This creates an "atmosphere of apprehension" for IRBs, and challenges Internet researchers, because their work demands innovative methods in a field unfamiliar to most IRBs. This paper is intended to offer both cautions to those anticipating internet research, as well as advice on dealing with the IRB.

When Messages Are The Medium: Researching Best Practices In Online Education, Sharon S. Kleinman
Iowa Journal of Communication
This paper discusses a comparative case study of online media history courses designed from the constructivist perspective (Moon, 1999). Data were collected using online participant observation, the course management systems automated tracking of students' course website usage, and online questionnaires. Data were analyzed/or insights regarding factors affecting student participation, satisfaction, and achievement. Innovative strategies for designing online learning environments that encourage interaction, active learning, and academic integrity were field-tested and critiqued. Among the innovations that shaped "classroom" dialogue and fostered an active learning community were: (1) using and publicizing the course management systems capabilities for tracking students' course website usage, …

Sticks, Stones, & Stigmas: A Social-Cognitive Account Of Stereotype Threat Mechanisms, Michael C. Philipp
Sticks, Stones, & Stigmas: A Social-Cognitive Account Of Stereotype Threat Mechanisms, Michael C. Philipp
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Stereotype threat effects have been a popular domain of much psychological inquiry over the past decade. A number of psychological dispositions (e.g., high levels of stigma consciousness, high levels of social dominance orientation, and high levels of domain identification), situational factors (e.g., out-group presence and task difficulty), and physiological characteristics ( e.g., levels of circulating testosterone) have been identified as factors that determine one's susceptibility to the performance debilitating effects of negative stereotype activation. Although each of these variables has been found to be important in eliciting underperformance under threat, no attempts have yet investigated the relationships between these variables. …

Using Office Referral Data To Help Understand School-Wide Discipline, Sarah Remakel-Henkels
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Some schools looking to create and maintain a safe and supportive learning environment implement Positive Behavior Supports (PBS). Maintaining a safe and supportive school requires a solid sense of the current school climate and a continuous improvement process for measuring progress and making appropriate corrections. Schools need to be keeping track of whether a safe, supportive learning community is being provided to all students all of the time through key indicator data.
Due to the increased amount of accountability being placed upon schools and states through NCLB, there is also an increased amount of academic data collection required. One school …
Food Preferences Between Diverse Ethnic Groups In A College Population, Enrique Gallegos Covarrubias
Food Preferences Between Diverse Ethnic Groups In A College Population, Enrique Gallegos Covarrubias
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Obesity and its psychosocial and medical consequences are costing the United States billions of dollars per year. Many factors such as lack of physical activity, changing lifestyles, and unhealthy eating behaviors contribute to the increasing prevalence of obesity. In the present study, food preferences among college-aged students were measured from two different geographical locations (Texas and Iowa). Gender (men vs. women), ethnicity (Hispanic vs. Caucasian), and Body Mass Index scores (normal vs. overweight) were utilized as dependent variables to measure food preferences. Participants were required to rate four menus, which included important nutritional information. Ratings were obtained to measure how …
Perceptions Of Luck And Gambling Patterns, Dustin Daugherty
Perceptions Of Luck And Gambling Patterns, Dustin Daugherty
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Current research examining situations that elicit gambling behaviors have tended to focus on many structural features such as the "near miss" phenomenon. This is the idea that individuals will play longer on a slot machine that almost lands on a jackpot symbol than one that does not. Until now this research has focused mainly on a near "win" situation and ignored what will be called a near "loss" situation. Previous findings indicate that by experiencing a near loss, a participant will perceive that he/she has more personal good luck than those individuals who experience a near win. The study presented …
The Spring Break Effect: The Relationship Between Individual Self-Objectification And Physical Fitness Behavior, Brett Dobesh
The Spring Break Effect: The Relationship Between Individual Self-Objectification And Physical Fitness Behavior, Brett Dobesh
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Research findings focusing on the theoretical foundation for self-objectification suggests that women are more likely to have high levels of objectification for a variety of reasons. To extend this body of research the purpose of this investigation is two-fold: (1) to assess the influence that spring break attendance may have on levels of self-objectification for fraternity and sorority members, and (2) to observe the connections between SO levels and increased levels of physical fitness. This study consisted of (n = 153) college students actively involved in the Greek System at two Mid-west universities. The students were asked to complete three …
We're Not "Free-Loading Jocks" : The Presentation Of The Self In The Everyday Lives Of The Collegiate Level Student Athlete, Katie Leanne Sorrell
We're Not "Free-Loading Jocks" : The Presentation Of The Self In The Everyday Lives Of The Collegiate Level Student Athlete, Katie Leanne Sorrell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Student-athletes live complex lives because they are expected to maintain a number of master statuses. According to Goffman (1959), individuals perform in frontstage. However, other scholars, building from Goffman, state that this is more complex than this. The backstage also has performance elements in it. These regions for student-athletes can become complicated because they have to manage their impressions depending on their social situation. I conducted 18 in-depth, semi-structured interviews to explore the presentation of self in the everyday lives of collegiate level student athletes. Myths abound surrounding college athletes, such that athletes are surrounded with limitless opportunities, or that …
Cameras In Court: A Utilitarian Ethical Approach, Kylie L. Greene
Cameras In Court: A Utilitarian Ethical Approach, Kylie L. Greene
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Cameras in Court: A Utilitarian Ethical Approach is a theoretical discussion that establishes ethical guidelines for journalists and judges concerning cameras in court. Using utilitarian and deontological ethics the research will show that the current professional codes for journalists and judges are not sufficient and that a more utilitarian approach is necessary. Although still cameras were allowed in courtrooms in the early 1900s, it was the 1995 trial of football star O.J. Simpson that many say forever changed the way journalists, judges, and the public viewed cameras in court. Today, many judges are restricting camera access in high-profile cases, while …
What I Believe About Leadership And Education : A Reflective Essay, Matthew R. Bro
What I Believe About Leadership And Education : A Reflective Essay, Matthew R. Bro
Graduate Research Papers
The works of a great leader will brilliantly encompass many specific critical elements. One must consider the many different ways an individual leader's own unique personality can combine the critical elements together. The critical leadership elements combined with the individual's own unique personality traits will make one realize that to break down the critical elements of the exceptional leader is a daunting task.
We are very complex, fearfully and wonderfully made creatures (Psalm 139:14) that cannot be analyzed easily. However we have likely experienced great leadership, and have asked ourselves: Why it is that this person motivates me, challenges me, …
Achievement Goal Theory: A Preliminary Study Examining Educators' Motivational Beliefs And Practices, Marc Groen
Achievement Goal Theory: A Preliminary Study Examining Educators' Motivational Beliefs And Practices, Marc Groen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Achievement goal theory has become one of the most promising motivational theories examining both student motivation and achievement. The purpose of this study was to expand the current body of research on achievement goal theory by exploring educators' motivational beliefs and instructional practices. Data was collected from two Eastern Iowa school districts using an online survey. Results from this preliminary study provide important information about the practical nature of motivational problems from the perspective of elementary and middle school educators. The author explores the implications of the findings for educators, school psychologists, and future research.
Examining The Role Of Empathy Training In Anger Management Programs For Young Children, Amy L. Zirkelbach
Examining The Role Of Empathy Training In Anger Management Programs For Young Children, Amy L. Zirkelbach
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of empathy in anger management programs for young children. Given the growing body of research demonstrating the effectiveness of early intervention, efforts are being made to adapt anger management programs to younger populations. As researchers tackle this challenge, careful attention must be given to the unique developmental needs of this age group. Because many anger management programs involve an empathy training component, it is important to determine whether younger populations can benefit from this training. If children are not able to demonstrate these skills at this age, programs and curriculums …
The Use Of Direct Observation In Functional Behavior Assessment, Lori O'Rourke
The Use Of Direct Observation In Functional Behavior Assessment, Lori O'Rourke
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The present study is an investigation into the use of observational strategies as they apply to functional behavior assessment. In addition to highlighting the key observational methods, practical issues that affect the development of an observational instrument are discussed. Furthermore, the factors that influence the reliability and validity of an observation session are discussed. Suggestions are provided for practitioners who are observing the instructional, social, and physical factors that may influence a student's behavior within the classroom. Finally, this study will demonstrate how assessment knowledge, which is gained through direct observation, can be tied to effective classroom interventions.
The Developmental Process Of Reflection In Youth Ministry, Laura Bowers
The Developmental Process Of Reflection In Youth Ministry, Laura Bowers
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The research of applied developmental practice of reflection is inconsistent and its theoretical framework changes depending on the disciplinary perspective. The variability is illustrative of reflection's complexity and its inconsistency as an ideal. This research attempts not only to define reflection within the context of the Prairie Lakes youth ministry program but also to highlight specific programmatic elements that are involved in the process. Through text analysis by the Minnesota Contextual and Content Analysis program and the theoretical guidance of Kohlberg, Mayer and Dewey insight into an applied reflective practice is formed.
A Descriptive Study Of The Frequency And Intensity Of Physical Activity Among Incoming First-Year Students At Luther College, Kristi Leonard
A Descriptive Study Of The Frequency And Intensity Of Physical Activity Among Incoming First-Year Students At Luther College, Kristi Leonard
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Young adults are not as active as they should be in comparison to national standards. They are more overweight than is healthy. The purpose of this study was to describe the physical activity volume (frequency + intensity) of incoming first-year students at an Iowa liberal arts college. Did certain demographic characteristics, such as gender; projected major area of study; age; native language; religious preference; ethnic background; and past high school and projected college athletic, theater/drama, and music participation of these students make a difference in their volume of physical activity? This study focused on the examination of exercise behaviors of …
