Housewives, Athletes, And Smiling Menopausal Women: An Analysis Of Female Gender Roles In Dtc Advertising, Nicole L. Defenbaugh
Housewives, Athletes, And Smiling Menopausal Women: An Analysis Of Female Gender Roles In Dtc Advertising, Nicole L. Defenbaugh
Iowa Journal of Communication
This paper is a feminist rhetorical analysis of reified gender roles in direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertisements that examines a myriad of pictorial and textual portrayals of women. The analysis commences with a cursory review of traditional depictions of women in advertising and proceeds to compare this pre-existing rhetoric with twelve DTC advertisements found in four magazines. I conclude that DTC advertisers continue to use the traditional "good woman" image in addition to commodity feminism. Although advertisers occasionally challenge gender roles and include women of color, these images are often underrepresented and overshadowed by traditional images of gender.

Cyberbullying : A Preventative Method, Kristen A. Hoelscher
Cyberbullying : A Preventative Method, Kristen A. Hoelscher
Graduate Research Papers
A new means of bullying has been created through the usage of cell phones, pagers, and the internet. Cyberbullying is an aggressive act intended to harm another and is repeated over a duration of time. It involves using digital communication devices to target victims. As a newer phenomenon, the research on cyberbullying is limited. However, the research that has been conducted suggests that cyberbullying is a great cause of concern among our youth today and is an issue that needs to be addressed. A four lesson guidance unit addressing cyberbullying was developed. This unit focuses on creating awareness and educating …

Grief And Loss : The Effects On Children And The School Counselor's Role, Hope Nicole Bleckwehl
Graduate Research Papers
School counselors may play a major role in the lives of grieving children. It is inevitable counselors will work with children having grieving issues. Children do grieve and their grieving process may look the same or different than adults. Children's experiences with death, developmental level, and individual differences all effect how a child will react to the loss of a loved one or a pet. The grieving process, developmental considerations, gender differences and common sources of loss are discussed in the following paper. Interventions a school counselor may use with children in classroom guidance, group counseling, and individual counseling are …

Growing Epidemic Of Videogame Addiction, Christopher S. Hager
Graduate Research Papers
Videogames are rapidly becoming more popular with children and adults alike. Ever since the mid 1980s, videogames have been a major part of pop culture and a widely accepted form of entertainment. With more advances of technology and internet, online gaming has also evolved. Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games such as Everquest and World of Warcraft have become a topic of addiction (msnbc.com, 2008). Some individuals have neglected jobs, families, and personal well-being to continue to play these games, with signs of addiction mimicking substance addiction. The American Psychiatric Association is even considering involving videogame addiction as a compulsive …

Character Counts! Incentive Program : Implementation And Evaluation, Julie A. Rouse
Graduate Research Papers
In order to better serve the school population, the school counselor is often called upon to deliver the counseling curriculum to all students. Data often drives the curriculum the counselor will present to the students. As a result of a program audit and perception data, a school counselor at West Elementary chose to implement a character education piece to the curriculum. Furthermore, an incentive program was added to encourage positive behavior and to recognize student achievement. Due to the age of accountability, the school counselor created a survey to assess the program. In addition to the survey, other sources of …
Dark Clouds And Flashes Of Lightning: Silencing In Families With An Alcoholic Parent, Jennifer Scarduzio
Dark Clouds And Flashes Of Lightning: Silencing In Families With An Alcoholic Parent, Jennifer Scarduzio
Iowa Journal of Communication
In order to understand the multiple levels and intersections of meaning and context in my family, this study centered on autoethnographic stories about my experiences with an alcoholic father. It also included reflexive dyadic interviews with my Dad, my Mom, and my younger sister, Anne. Each new interview, autoethnographic story, and reflection added a new angle and dimension to my story. These multiple angles helped me to gain a deeper understanding of growing up and living with an alcoholic father. They allowed me to crystallize my experiences and to break the silence in my family about these difficult moments.

Sizing Things Up: The Effects Of Weight On The Evaluation Of Job Candidates, Frances L.M. Smith
Sizing Things Up: The Effects Of Weight On The Evaluation Of Job Candidates, Frances L.M. Smith
Iowa Journal of Communication
Previous research has shown that job applicants may be discriminated against in hiring practices due to appearance. The purpose of this study is to determine if discrimination will occur against overweight job applicants who are applying for highly visible and communicative jobs. Attribution theory may explain negative attitudes toward overweight individuals in the workplace. In order to determine if negative attributes would be given to overweight job applicants, a between-subjects experimental design was used for this study. Results showed that participants did not rate the overweight job applicant lower than the average-weight applicant on communication or personality characteristics. Participants did …

Play Therapy With Adults, Lisa E. Heiden
Graduate Research Papers
Play therapy is a type of therapy that utilizes play as the method for communication instead of the traditional talk therapy. It is most often used with children, but it can also be used with adults regardless of age, ethnicity, or background. Play allows people to experiment with different roles, learn and try new skills, and create or recreate events from life.
Play therapy has been adapted to fit different theoretical orientations and multicultural considerations, and it can be demonstrated through a variety of mediums and formats. There is a lack of adequate information and research concerning play therapy. The.purpose …

Online Counseling : Risks, Benefits, And Future Development, Lindsey J. Kenison-Severson
Graduate Research Papers
Online counseling started becoming popular in the mid-1990's and is a popular source of debate right now. There are a number of risks and benefits that need to be evaluated by both the counselor and client when determining the appropriateness of online counseling. There seems to be a lack of research regarding how effective online counseling is, but preliminary research seems positive in supporting the argument that relationships can be formed when using online counseling. Some individuals may be more appropriate for online counseling and some problems may be helped more effectively. Clients and counselors need to be educated about …

Autoethnography As Vessel: Energy As Communicative Praxis, Amber Lynn Zimmerman
Iowa Journal of Communication
In this article, I engage the concept of energy, as rhythms of consciousness, through dreams, empathic knowing, and the healing power of narrative. Energetic content and autoethnographic form are intimately intertwined in this work, as method becomes vessel for opening and creating experiences of enlightenment. The act of writing emerges as a rhythm of consciousness in and of itself and has the potential to generate new ground for thinking, being, and visioning what is possible in our interactions and our scholarship.
Understanding Gender Stereotypes And Their Impact On Clients, Stacey Hurt
Understanding Gender Stereotypes And Their Impact On Clients, Stacey Hurt
Graduate Research Papers
Gender stereotyping has a complex and enduring history in our society, and it is an underlying factor in many issues – clients bring to counseling, including – among other things-women's and men's experience of depression (Nugent & Jones, 2005). A complicating aspect of gender stereotyping is that both males and females in our culture have been socially conditioned to fulfill many of the stereotypes imposed on them, and following stereotypical gender roles excessively can be harmful to their mental health, self-image, and interpersonal relationships (Nugent & Jones).
Counselors can use gender-role analysis and other interventions to help clients gain insight …
The Roles Of Coaches And Teachers : Fostering A Climate For Motivation In An Age Of Accountability, Jocelyn Hays
The Roles Of Coaches And Teachers : Fostering A Climate For Motivation In An Age Of Accountability, Jocelyn Hays
Graduate Research Papers
This paper examines the difference between how a coach motivates an athlete or fosters a climate for motivation versus how a teacher motivates a student or fosters a climate for motivation. One way to examine how coaches and teachers motivate their athletes and students is to examine the roles of coaches and teachers as motivators. Examining the roles of coaches and teachers as motivators and the subsequent discussion of how the roles of coaches as motivators could inform the roles of teachers as motivators seeks to satisfy society's call for teacher accountability.

Who Should Own The Air?: A Closer Look At Smoking Bans, Stacy Mcmullen
Who Should Own The Air?: A Closer Look At Smoking Bans, Stacy Mcmullen
Honors Program Theses
Smoking bans result from public health concerns. There are well over 70,000 articles in peer-reviewed journals that link smoking with various health problems [Chaloupka et al. 2004-2005, 2]. There are also a number of states currently debating statewide bans. Are statewide smoking bans the answer to the tobacco problem or are they simply an example of excessive paternalism? The purpose of this paper is to examine the two sides of the argument and determine whether policymakers should implement smoking bans. It will show that, in the end, nonsmokers should own the air, and smoking bans should be implemented to protect …
