Youth Volunteerism: By Looking At Who Volunteers And Why Organizations May Be Able To Recruit Youth To Become Long-Standing Volunteers, Kathryn M. Zimmerly Jan 2009

Youth Volunteerism: By Looking At Who Volunteers And Why Organizations May Be Able To Recruit Youth To Become Long-Standing Volunteers, Kathryn M. Zimmerly

Graduate Research Papers

In 1835 Alexis de Tocqueville suggested volunteerism could reduce antisocial or criminal behavior (Uggen and Janikula, 1999). When looking at volunteerism today researchers have concluded similar aspects; for example, Uggen and Janikula found in their 1999 research that volunteers had increased self -acceptance, instrumentality, and civic identity.

Research by the Independent Sector suggests that 70 percent of youth volunteers feel volunteering is important because it gives them a new perspective, allows them to participate for a good cause, and gives them a greater respect for the people they are helping. Youth volunteer levels have increased (to 70 percent from 59 …

The Effect Of Uncivil Behavior On Friendships: An Exploration Of Incivility As An Interpersonal Construct, Anna F. Carmon, Becky L. Degreeff, Ann Burnett, Julie L. Semlak, Kelly L. Wolf

Iowa Journal of Communication

Through the lens of politeness theory, this study examined the relationship between perceptions of homophily and individualized trust and uncivil behavior in friendships. Using an experimental survey design, research participants responded to one of four scenarios involving rude cell phone calls. Each represented a different combination of civility and the biological sex of the actor. Uncivil behavior was negatively related to perceptions of homophily and individualized trust. The biological sex of the actor did not significantly relate to perceptions of homophily or individualized trust.

Personal Epistemologies And The Learning Paradox In Teacher Education: A Neglected Dilemma, Elana Joram, Carmen Montecinos Jan 2009

Personal Epistemologies And The Learning Paradox In Teacher Education: A Neglected Dilemma, Elana Joram, Carmen Montecinos

Faculty Publications

In this chapter, we discuss the role that personal epistemologies play in teacher education, particularly with respect to the potential problems and roadblocks they may present. We suggest that epistemological beliefs govern the kind of knowledge that preservice teachers consider to be legitimate and worthwhile learning in their programs, regulate the ways in which they make choices among competing knowledge claims and justify their own choices. A body of research has examined epistemic cognition as a dimension of the cognitive growth that occurs during the college years (e.g., Baxter- Magolda, 2002; King & Kitchener, 2002; Perry, 1970), and recently, the …

The Relationship Between Employment And Alcohol Consumption Among College Students, Justin Michael Sprung Jan 2009

The Relationship Between Employment And Alcohol Consumption Among College Students, Justin Michael Sprung

Honors Program Theses

This study examines the relationship between employment and alcohol consumption among college students in order to determine whether one variable influences the other. A survey was utilized to investigate this relationship. A total of 687 students from the University of Northern Iowa, 226 males and 461 femal.es, participated in the study. The results indicated no significant relationship between student employment and alcohol consumption. However, it was found that alcohol consumption was significantly related to residency and gender. The findings of this study suggest that factors other than employment may play a more important role in determining the level of alcohol …

Treatment Options For Neuropathic Pain, Sara Akre Jan 2009

Treatment Options For Neuropathic Pain, Sara Akre

Honors Program Theses

Neuropathic pain is caused by injury to or disease of the nervous system. It affects many people around the world and is a symptom of several diseases. In the United States, it is estimated that up to 3% of Americans have neuropathic pain, which costs the healthcare system $40 billion annually (Gilron et al. 2006). It is, unfortunately, difficult to ameliorate or eliminate due to the complexity of the nervous system and its plasticity and is, therefore, a chronic condition. Health care professionals continually struggle to treat patients' pain and, since tolerance to painkillers is easily built up, this often …

The Effects Of Anonymity On Self Reports Of Depression And Alcohol Consumption, Yolanda Latrice Evans Jan 2009

The Effects Of Anonymity On Self Reports Of Depression And Alcohol Consumption, Yolanda Latrice Evans

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research examined the impact of anonymity on self reports of alcohol consumption and depressive symptoms. Participants (N=363) were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: (1) Non anonymous or (2) Anonymous. All participants were administered the BDI and the MAST. Compared to the non anonymous group, those in the anonymous groups had significantly different higher means on the depression inventories. Women yielded significantly higher depression score means than men, but no significant differences were found between mean and women for alcohol use or between anonymous and non anonymous conditions. The level of alcohol use by both college men and …

Cognitive-Linguistic Abilities In Young And Middle-Aged Adults, Jamie Leigh Flatness

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The current study investigated the differences on cognition tests and whether or not an age effect existed between young versus middle-aged adults. Twenty young adults (ages 20-39) and twenty middle-aged adults (40-59) were given four cognitive tests to determine if differences in performance existed across the age groups. Tests included the Ross Information Processing Assessment-2nd revision (RIPA-2; Ross-Swain, 1996), the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RA VLT; Rey, 1964 ), the Wechsler Working Memory (WWM) subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale, 3rd edition (WMS-Ill; Wechsler, 1997), and the Cognitive Linguistic Quick Test (CLQT,· Helm-Estabrooks, 2001 ). A series of one-factor …

Resumes And Cover Letters: The Accuracy Of Extraversion Judgments Made From Resume And Cover Letter Biodata, Matthew Sean Christensen Jan 2009

Resumes And Cover Letters: The Accuracy Of Extraversion Judgments Made From Resume And Cover Letter Biodata, Matthew Sean Christensen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This following thesis study examined the accuracy of extraversion judgments accrued from resumes and cover letters. Within personnel selection, professionals often rely upon the applicant resume as an initial prescreening tool. Little empirical research, however, has explored whether reviewers use the resume and cover letter in a reliable fashion. Moreover, the current research base has not explored whether cover letters improve the accuracy of certain personality inferences made from resume biodata. Based upon the premises of Funder's (1995) Realistic Accuracy Model (RAM), the author posited that cover letters improve the accuracy of extraversion judgments made from resumes. The second intention …

Are Soda Beverages A Contributing Factor To Weight Gain In Children?, Wendy Maria Clark Jan 2009

Are Soda Beverages A Contributing Factor To Weight Gain In Children?, Wendy Maria Clark

Graduate Research Papers

The controversy that diet soda may trigger a mechanism for weight gain has inspired this literature review. Our children need current facts on what is healthy and not healthy. Soda has been regarded as a discretionary beverage and not long ago, as a treat, after daily nutritional needs were met. However, soda is being consumed more frequently replacing other healthy nutritious beverages. Since diet soda is calorie-free, people unknowingly may imagine it has no impact on their bodies. In reality, research findings suggest that the effects of soda on the body are not benign. It is worth taking an in-depth …

A Working Conference On Students With Disabilities In Stem Coursework And Careers, Audrey C. Rule, Greg P. Stefanich, Charlotte W. Haselhuhn, Belinda Peiffer

Faculty Publications

Background: Few teachers and special education specialists are aware of the materials and resources available to support science; technology; engineering; and mathematics instruction for the scattered and isolated 3000 students with sensory and motor disabilities in Iowa's K-12 schools. Additionally; faculty at many community colleges and regent institutions are not aware of possible accommodations for their students with disabilities who have interests in pursuing STEM careers. Unfortunately; this often leads to discouragement and lack of success for students with motor or sensory disabilities. This conference brings together experts and conference attendees involved in instruction; support; or transitions for these students …

Spelling Instruction In The Classroom, Kristin Zweibohmer Jan 2009

Spelling Instruction In The Classroom, Kristin Zweibohmer

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to identify research-based, effective spelling strategies that will improve students' abilities in a classroom. There has been a great debate about the effectiveness of spelling instruction in the classroom. Many studies have been conducted on spelling instruction using a word sort technique. By looking at past and present studies of spelling instruction, educators will be able to see how well these strategies for spelling instruction have worked. This knowledge can help educators design a spelling instruction program that will enhance their students' scores in many curriculum areas. An effective, research-based, contemporary model for teachers …

Family With Domestic Violence, La Tonya R. Stokes Jan 2009

Family With Domestic Violence, La Tonya R. Stokes

Graduate Research Papers

What is domestic violence? When someone speaks of domestic violence what goes through your mind? Domestic violence, which is also known as domestic abuse or spousal abuse, is when a family member, partner or ex-partner attempts to physically or psychologically dominate another. But domestic violence has many forms other than physical violence. There are sexual abuse, emotional abuse, intimidation, economic deprivation, stalking and threats of violence (Domestic Violence). There are four types of violence within domestic violence: Common couple violence (CCV), Intimate terrorism (IT), violent resistance (VR), and Mutual violent control (MVC) (Johnson & Ferraro, 2000). There are three basic …

Teacher-Child Relationships In Early Childhood Classrooms, Michelle Tuttle Jan 2009

Teacher-Child Relationships In Early Childhood Classrooms, Michelle Tuttle

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this review was to evaluate the existing evidence of child and teacher relationships in early childhood settings on children's academic performance. Relationships were examined between parent and child, childcare provider and child, and teacher and child. Parent-child and teacher-child relationships are interrelated. The relationships interact with one another and influence the way a child develops. Children found with quality parent and teacher relationships were better able to concentrate, explore the environment, and ask adults for help. Research also found that quality activities in the classroom promoted strong teacher-child relationships. Two types of instruction, direct instructions and child-centered, …

The Importance Of Differentiation For The Struggling Reader, Christine M. Troyer Jan 2009

The Importance Of Differentiation For The Struggling Reader, Christine M. Troyer

Graduate Research Papers

Learning to read is a journey, and the first steps of this journey are among the most important. It is critical for struggling readers to have support and encouragement as they overcome the various obstacles they face. Not all young readers have the same background knowledge and sufficient skills to be proficient. Teachers play a vital role in supporting these students. First grade especially is a critical step on this path. A poor reader will continue to struggle and lose interest without the necessary guidance. This paper will detail the necessity of assisting the struggling reader in the first grade …

The Effectiveness Of Colored Overlays On Reading Achievement And Attitudes Toward Reading For Students With Scotopic Sensitive Syndrome, Hanan Ali Bagabas Jan 2009

The Effectiveness Of Colored Overlays On Reading Achievement And Attitudes Toward Reading For Students With Scotopic Sensitive Syndrome, Hanan Ali Bagabas

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated the effects on students identified with Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (SSS) or Irlen Syndrome (IS) when using colored overlays as an intervention (immediately and over time) to assess reading performance (rate, accuracy, and comprehension); to measure visual-motor integration; and to assess attitude toward reading. SSS/IS is a visual perceptual problem related to a collection of symptoms that affects an individual's performance when reading. Three participants, all males (one 3rd -grade student, one 4th -grade student, and one 5th -grade student), were identified as having SSS/IS and other learning disabilities.

The study involved five test instruments (Irlen Reading Perceptual …

Racial Prejudice And Political Orientation: A Test Of Dovidio And Gaertner’S Integrated Model Of Racism, Abbie Anne Chalupnik Jan 2009

Racial Prejudice And Political Orientation: A Test Of Dovidio And Gaertner’S Integrated Model Of Racism, Abbie Anne Chalupnik

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Although the direct expression of racial prejudice is no longer accepted in society, it has not altogether disappeared. Aversive racism is characterized by pro and anti-Black attitudes, which have been largely socialized, creating an intrapsychic conflict sometimes causing overcompensation in favor of minorities (Nail, Harton, & Decker, 2003). Modern racism stems from traditional values and the Protestant work ethic, and is expressed through attitudes about social policies yet remains fundamentally racist (Kinder & Sears, 1981; Sears & McConahay, 1973). This study extended Dovidio and Gaertner's (1998) Integrated Model of Racism, which links political liberals with the expression of aversive racism …

Further Delineation Of The Role Of The Amygdala In Face Processing And Racial Categorization, Osman Afzal Chowdhry

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

DNA exonerations in the legal system have increased steadily since 1989 from one or two per year to an average of 21 per year since 2001. A disquieting number of these exonerations originated from wrongful convictions following cross-racial identifications. Explaining the prevalence of erroneous cross-racial identifications centers on the Cross Race Effect (CRE), a phenomena whereby recognition for one's own race greatly outweighs recognition ability for other-race faces. Forty years of research in this area has produced a number of competing explanations. Recent neurological evidence has demonstrated separate neural regions for the processing of same-race and other-race faces as well …
