Iowa Placement Examinations, George D. Stoddard Jan 1925

Iowa Placement Examinations, George D. Stoddard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowa Placement Examinations in English, French, chemistry, and mathematics are designed primarily for entering college students. Each examination appears in two series: an Aptitude Examination which measures specific capacity in the various branches, and a Training Examination which measures objectively previous performances in the subject. Each examination was prepared through cooperation of the Psychology Department and the Department represented by the specific subject. Their primary purpose is to provide an adequate criterion for the sectioning of classes on the basis of ability.

Temporal Precision In Motor Rhythm, Robert Holmes Seashore Jan 1925

Temporal Precision In Motor Rhythm, Robert Holmes Seashore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The object of this research in motor rhythm is two-fold; (1) the analysis and comparison of factors involved in rhythmic perception and action by means of a battery of 12 psychophysical tests, whose results are treated statistically and individually, and (2) the development amd standardization of a new test for temporal accuracy in motor rhythm, which may be used in conjunction with present measures of musical talent. A graphic record of an observer's tapping in time with a recurrent rhythm pattern is obtained by means of a phonograph chronograph, and is then measured for regularity. In contrast to numerous very …

Maxwell's Treatment Of Networks Applied To The Delta Connection Of A Three-Phase Power Source, Alfred W. Meyer Jan 1924

Maxwell's Treatment Of Networks Applied To The Delta Connection Of A Three-Phase Power Source, Alfred W. Meyer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There are two purposes in this paper. The more subordinate one is to give the results of the particular problem. The more important reason for the paper is that it may suggest a means of solution of similar problems. The question arose as to the relation between the electromotive forces of line currents and the electromotive forces of the currents in the delta connected load lines of a three-phase service. There are four possible arrangements. The alternator coils may be in Y or delta connection and with either of these there may be a Y or delta connection between the …

A New Interpolation Formula, John F. Reilly Jan 1924

A New Interpolation Formula, John F. Reilly

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

113. A new interpolation

If we wish to interpolate values of a function between two given values y1, and y2, we may employ a polynomial in x1. When the only conditions to be satisfied are that the function take the value y1 when x=l, and the value y2 when x=2, the polynomial of minimum degree is of the form a0+a1 (x-1). Interpolation by means of this polynomial is that ordinarily employed when using trigonometric and logarithmic tables, and is spoken of as interpolation by first differences. If, however, additional conditions are …

Contributions To Knowledge By Gustavus Detlef Hinrichs, M.D., Ll.D. (Paper Presented At The Thirty-Eighth Annual Meeting Of The Iowa Academy Of Science), Charles Keyes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As an original organizer and charter member of the Iowa Academy of Sciences, that society which is the parent of our present Academy, the latter holds with peculiar attachment the memory of the late Dr. Gustavus Hinrichs, who is, for more than a quarter of a century, also identified with the faculty of our State University as one of its most distinguished members. He further organizes and conducts for 15 years our State Weather Service, the first of the kind to be inaugurated in this country. A brief life-sketch of this gifted man appears in our Proceedings of last year, …

On Super-Regeneration, E. O. Hulburt Jan 1923

On Super-Regeneration, E. O. Hulburt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A simple mathematical analysis of super-regeneration yielded conclusions, in accordance with observation, that the super-regenerative system amplifies without distortion and that the amplification increases with increase of signal frequency and with decrease of variation frequency. Two single tube super-regenerative circuits, interesting because of their simplicity, are described.

Magnetic And Natural Rotatory Dispersion In Absorbing Media, E. O. Hulburt Jan 1923

Magnetic And Natural Rotatory Dispersion In Absorbing Media, E. O. Hulburt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A theoretical discussion based on the electron theory of H. A. Lorentz yielded formulas for the magnetic rotatory dispersion in isotropic absorbing media and for the natural rotatory dispersion in optically active absorbing media. In a few instances where sufficient data enabled calculation, the new magnetic rotation formula has given accurate agreement with experimental values, thereby accounting for the discrepancy previously noted between the observed Verdet angles and those calculated from a theory which neglected absorption.

The Deflection Of A Stream Of Electrons By Electromagnetic Radiation, E. O. Hulburt Jan 1923

The Deflection Of A Stream Of Electrons By Electromagnetic Radiation, E. O. Hulburt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A theoretical calculation, based on classical electrodynamics, gives for the maximum angular deflection, when certain approximations are made, He/mφ, where ω/2π is the frequency of the radiation, and H is the field due to it. For sunlight (H=.04) the value is only 4 X 10-10, far too small to detect experimentally, while for intense x-rays, the value is of the order of 10-13. Recently C. J. Lapp reported having obtained an observable deflection with x-rays. If further research should confirm this result, it would appear to be in direct conflict with the classical …

The Free Energy Of Dilution And The Activities Of The Ions Of Hydrogen Iodide In Aqueous Solutions, J. N. Pearce, A. R. Fortsch Jan 1923

The Free Energy Of Dilution And The Activities Of The Ions Of Hydrogen Iodide In Aqueous Solutions, J. N. Pearce, A. R. Fortsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Because of their anomalous behavior solutions of strong electrolytes have long occupied the attention of numerous investigators. Many attempts have been made to provide a theoretical explanation of the abnormalities. Of the various solution properties the free energies of dilution and the activities of the ions have been especially studied. From calculations based on the assumption that a common ion at any given concentration has the same mobility regardless of the associated ion Lewis has concluded that the chlorides, bromides and iodides of hydrogen and of the alkali halides are equally dissociated in 0.10 M solutions.
