Newton's Laws Of Motion, L. Begeman Feb 1930

Newton's Laws Of Motion, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

In the study of Newton's Laws of Motion, it is more important to understand the concepts they embody than to be able to repeat them verbatim. Too frequently, in the teaching of high school physics, memory work is allowed to take the place of concrete information. This is particularly true with reference to these basic mechanical concepts of the physical universe known as Newton's Laws of Motion.

Health And Cleanliness, H. Earl Rath Feb 1930

Health And Cleanliness, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

A short time ago there was presented in the columns of this paper an article dealing with the methods of motivating a health program. This article dealt with the methods of gaining an interest in the subject of health. Once having gained this interest a program of education must be brought forward. Such a program may not be elaborate, in fact probably should not be. It is the opinion of the writer that most programs of health attempt to cover too wide a field and do not leave sufficient definite impressions.

Household Insects, Roy L. Abbott Jan 1930

Household Insects, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

It was said above (see November Bulletin) that practically every animal is attacked by one or more kinds of insects. Man constitutes no exception to this statement, and it is my purpose in this article to deal with a few of the insects commonly found in or around our homes. Perhaps the most familiar of all household insects is the housefly.

The Influence Of Position On The Apparent Position, Size And Form Of Angles, William B. Collins Jan 1930

The Influence Of Position On The Apparent Position, Size And Form Of Angles, William B. Collins

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The angles were drawn with black india ink on white cards 10 cm. square and exhibited to the observer in the Michotte tachistoscope. The observer reproduced the angles with a pencil on a piece of white paper, 10 cm. square. The position of the reproduced legs of the angle was then measured. The size of the angle and the position of the bisector were computed subsequently. Position was measured in terms of a circular protractor placed in a vertical plane and rotated until 0° was uppermost. The protractor was also turned so as to read in the clockwise direction. Twelve …

A Study Of A Class Of Twenty Failing Students At Iowa State College, J. E. Evans Jan 1930

A Study Of A Class Of Twenty Failing Students At Iowa State College, J. E. Evans

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the winter quarter of 1930 fifty men engineering students from the freshman class of 1929 were registered in a class in which methods of study were discussed. This class met twice a week during the term. At the close of the fall term these students had attracted the attention of the scholarship committee because of poor work. All students in the group had failed or conditioned part of their work. If the scholarship committee had followed its regular procedure these students would have been eliminated from the college because of poor academic work.

Motion, L. Begeman Jan 1930

Motion, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

Motion is a general property of matter. There is no rest in the absolute sense. An object at rest with reference to the earth 's surface is in rapid motion with reference to the earth's axis of rotation just as a person may be at rest in a Pullman car and at the same time be in rapid motion with reference to the ground. All divisions of matter, - masses, molecules, atoms, protons, and electrons are moving relatively all of the time.

Astronomy, E. J. Cable Jan 1930

Astronomy, E. J. Cable

Science Bulletin

In the field of general science, astronomy offers projects for practical as well as very useful knowledge. One of the greatest values is its appeal to the intellect. Astronomy attempts to unravel the secrets of nature, not only on our planet, but also in the vastness of space around us that is within reach of man's powerful instruments. It acquaints man with what is going on around him as well as with what is happening in regions far removed from everyday experiences and personal contacts. Astronomy tries to make man feel "comfortable" and at "home" in his universe.

Statistical Control Of A Grading System, George W. Snedecor Jan 1930

Statistical Control Of A Grading System, George W. Snedecor

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

"Statistical Control" is a phrase which is very popular in business circles. What does it mean? Let us examine two types, the statistical control of the quality of a manufactured product, and the statistical control of a purchasing department. In the former case, over a sufficient period of time, records are made of the number of defects per 1000 (say) found in the product manufactured. From these records statistical standards are set up consisting of the averages and distributions of the occurrence of defects. By comparing any subsequent sample with such standards, the statistician is able to assert that the …

On The Summation Σx^N, John F. Reilly Jan 1930

On The Summation Σx^N, John F. Reilly

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The symbol Σxn will be used to denote the sum of the n th powers of the first x positive integers, that is, ln + 2n + 3n +... +xn, n integral. It is well known that this sum is equivalent to a polynomial of degree (n+l), having no constant term.

A Statistical Test Of Experimental Technique, George W. Snedecor Jan 1930

A Statistical Test Of Experimental Technique, George W. Snedecor

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The phrase "experimental technique" is used in a largely inclusive sense in this paper. A more precise title would be "A Statistical Test of Homogeneity." The reason for the more flexible phrase will be apparent, I trust, as the argument progresses.

A Statistical Study Of Industrial Science Students Of The Class Of 1926, Gertrude M. Cox Jan 1930

A Statistical Study Of Industrial Science Students Of The Class Of 1926, Gertrude M. Cox

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was carried through with three main objectives in view, 1. To find the relationship between the Iowa State College Aptitude Test (as a whole and in parts), the social and memory tests, work done in high school, and work done in college. 2. To determine the percentage of students; (a) who remained in college (b) who were dropped from college either by their own request or by the request of the scholarship committee. 3. To see if it is possible to determine which high school students should be allowed to enter Iowa State College.

The Air We Breathe, S. F. Hersey Dec 1929

The Air We Breathe, S. F. Hersey

Science Bulletin

In an examination of recent texts in general science one is impressed by the place given to a discussion and study of air in its various phases and applications. The expression "air minded" does not apply in this connection, but perhaps it holds true that a great amount of interest is always developed in pupils whenever we introduce the subject.
