Venereal Diseases, H. Earl Rath Mar 1932

Venereal Diseases, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

Much has been said about what ought to be done about venereal diseases. Nearly everyone agrees that more education on the subject is needed, but that is about as far as it goes in at least ninety-nine cases out of a hundred. The result is that much erroneous information is surreptitiously passed about. Some young people have an abnormal fear of venereal disease and live in dread of acquiring it from all kinds of objects. Others, and this group is entirely too large, treat the subject entirely too lightly, and fail to respect the dangers involved.

Wings, Roy L. Abbott Mar 1932

Wings, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

When 'wings' are mentioned, most people at once think of birds. But wings, and the consequent power of flight, are by no means limited to birds. Among the mammals, for example, bats have wings and are excellent flyers. In both birds and bats, the wings are merely modified front legs.

The Project In Chemistry, Donald D. Pettit Mar 1932

The Project In Chemistry, Donald D. Pettit

Science Bulletin

Some time ago the writer became convinced that the typical presentation of high school chemistry left many things to be desired, especially with that group who are completing their scholastic work with their high school diploma. As a rule they are leaving school pretty thoroughly disgusted with class work in general, and, although they had originally intended to continue in school as evidenced by their election of chemistry, they find that the prospect offers no allure. In many cases I am afraid that the course in chemistry helped to turn them from further scholastic endeavor. In order to furnish some …

A Great American Scientist, W. H. Kadesch Mar 1932

A Great American Scientist, W. H. Kadesch

Science Bulletin

"Dr. Albert A. Michelson, 78, discoverer of the speed of light, and one of the greatest scientists of modern times, died here at 3 :10 p.m. Saturday. "Death came quietly to the man whose work made it possible to know the distance of the stars. "It came on the eve of success of what he called his 'last experiment,' the most precise and extensive in physics-the exact determination of the speed of light." So ran the opening paragraphs of a long and appreciative front page article in the Des Moines Sunday Register of May 10, 1931. And in a similar …

Waves, L. Begeman Mar 1932

Waves, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

Of all the phenomena of the physical world, none is more important than that of waves. The average individual naturally assumes that the only waves of any importance in nature are water waves. To the student of science, however, there are other waves in nature far more important than those which we see rolling over the surface of a lake or of the ocean.

The High-Powered Skunk, Roy L. Abbott Mar 1932

The High-Powered Skunk, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

I can think of no animal that is at once so provoking and repelling of attention as the common skunk. His bright little face, clean black and white fur, plume-like tail, and fat roly-poly body all invite one to take liberties with him, yet a single move towards such familiarity, and he is transformed instantly into a thing vilely incredible, paralyzing, stupefying, insufferable.

Caves, O. B. Read Feb 1932

Caves, O. B. Read

Science Bulletin

Man's interest in caves dates back perhaps to prehistoric times. He probably used them as homes in his very earliest history. It is in caves that we find bones believed to be of primitive man. As he became civilized he developed and prepared for himself houses to live in and his interest in caves has taken on an entirely different aspect. They have become a source of curiosity or a field for scientific study.

The Inert Gases, R. W. Getchell Feb 1932

The Inert Gases, R. W. Getchell

Science Bulletin

Nitrogen gas is lazy. A chemical revolution may enlist and lead away nearly every other element and compound in the air, but nitrogen will stay at home and refuse to become excited. Less than forty years ago, Lord Rayleigh in England made use of this characteristic by removing the other components of the air and collecting the remaining supposedly pure nitrogen in order to study it.
