Higher Education In 1980, Richard M. Harbeck
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Any reasonable prediction of future changes in higher education must necessarily be based on observations and interpretations of what is taking place today in society in general and in education in particular. The following observations provide some of the rationale for points to be made later.

The Commission On Undergraduate Education In The Biological Sciences, Richard V. Bovbjerg
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
When colleagues find that I am a member of the Commission on Undergraduate Education in the Biological Sciences (CUEBS) they invariably have one or more questions about the organization. How did it all start? Is anything happening? Where will it all end? The purpose of this paper is to assess these questions.

If you are tired of "dry lab" investigations you are looking for better laboratory procedures and if you are interested in trying to let the student inquire, figure and question the problem as well as the answer, this report will inform you of another aspect of the inquiry method of learning.
Testing Frequency And Junior High Students, Lynn W. Glass
Testing Frequency And Junior High Students, Lynn W. Glass
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
As a matter of habit I have always given a twelve to fifteen question quiz to my junior high life science students every five to seven classroom days. This was always done on the untested assumption that a more frequent test versus a test given after three to four weeks of study would tend to motivate the student, serve as a learning device, and lessen the amount of cramming and test anxiety experienced by the student.

Introducing Organic Chemistry In General Chemistry Course, William Pecha
Introducing Organic Chemistry In General Chemistry Course, William Pecha
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The success of the CHEM Study and the CBA High School chemistry courses have at least impressed upon the colleges that their chemistry courses need revamping. There has been a noticeable increase of theory in general chemistry, especially concepts usually taught in physical chemistry, which show a definite advance of the curriculum.

For a number of years the Iowa Academy has felt a growing need for more effective promotion of science and science education in the state of Iowa. The establishment of a permanent office with a salaried executive secretary is envisioned as a major step toward the accomplishment of this goal. This committee report indicates recommended procedures for making such a move by September, 1967.

A New Junior High Science Program, Jerry Underfer
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The laboratory approach has been extensively utilized in the contemporary high school science courses, but has not been utilized in the junior high sequence to the same extent. Realizing the need for a coordinated science pro g r a m for grades seven through nine which would incorporate the contemporary objectives and procedures, the Florida State Department of Science Education applied for and received a grant from the U.S. Office of Education to develop such a program.

Why Teach Fungi In High School?, David Mclaughlin
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Student and teacher alike should be more aware of fungi. The reasons I state for this assumption are: fungi are interesting; they play an important role in human affairs; fungi are associated with many areas of biological sciences; they are easily utilized in the classroom; and they are easy to obtain and work with.

Often we get the impression that an organization is not accomplishing anything because we have not been involved in a meeting last week or last month. ISTS is an organization which is sometimes accused of being rather dormant. Do not be fooled; it is awake and its officers and committees are developing plans for its three major events.
