An Experimental Study Of The "Doctor Fox Effect", John E. Ware, Reed G. Williams Jan 1974

An Experimental Study Of The "Doctor Fox Effect", John E. Ware, Reed G. Williams

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Colleges and universities are employing student evaluations of faculty with increasing frequency. On some campuses, the forms are used at the instructor's option and serve primarily as a source of feedback for faculty development purposes. Others require student evaluation of instruction and publish the results in academic "consumer's guides." Still others consider student evaluations of instruction in making decisions with regard to faculty salary increases, retention, tenure and promotion. The optional use of student ratings in order to improve instruction often evolves to the mandatory consideration of student rating data in making decisions about faculty retention, promotion and tenure. As …

To Dye Or Not To Dye, A. C. Haman Jan 1974

To Dye Or Not To Dye, A. C. Haman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In the beginning there was water and rock, but as plant life evolved, the globe became more colorful. Cool greens gradually enveloped the earth as successive waves of mosses, ferns, conifers and angiosperms conquered the land. In addition new pigments evolved providing artistic man with new mood-creating dyes with which to color his existence. Primitive man utilized dyes to color his skin to frighten his enemies and increase his prestige. Greek ladies, dissatisfied with the color of their hair, used buckthorn, Rhamnus, to stain their hair yellow and add to their charms. European aristocrats of the Middle Ages, traveling …

Model Rocketry - An Excellent Teaching Aid, Edward L. Pizzini

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

As unlikely as it may seem, hobbies can serve as a powerful aid in the teaching of science. They not only provide concrete examples but capitalize on the student's interest. Model rocketry activities are an excellent example of such "high involvement" learning hobbies.

Professor George M. Maxwell Makes Magic - And Learning Engineering Becomes Fun, Jack Burke

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The University of Wisconsin-Madison associate professor of metallurgical and mining engineering teaches materials science both on the campus and around Wisconsin, talking and putting on demonstrations before high school and college students, bankers, businessmen, dentists, doctors, secretaries and others. Give him five minutes or a college semester, and he will try to convert you into a knowledgeable user of materials. His approach starts off with familiar basic processes of chemistry and physics and builds from there.

Piaget And Science Teaching, Frederick P. De Luca Jan 1974

Piaget And Science Teaching, Frederick P. De Luca

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Piaget's life is as interesting as his theory of intellectual development He was born in France in 1896, published his first article at the age of 11, completed his Ph.D. degree in biology at the age of 21, and subsequently devoted his efforts to study, research and teaching in the psychology of intellectual development. Initially he was interested in exploring the idea that intellectual development resulted from adaptation of the individual to his environment, a concept involving a combination of biology and psychology. As his research progressed, however, he found it necessary to incorporate ideas from the disciplines of formal …

Some Comparative Studies Of Atomic Absorption Of Three Rare-Earth Elements Of [I.E. In] Organic-Aqueous Solutions, David L. Dozark Jan 1974

Some Comparative Studies Of Atomic Absorption Of Three Rare-Earth Elements Of [I.E. In] Organic-Aqueous Solutions, David L. Dozark

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The atomic absorption of dysprosium, erbium, and europium in nitrous oxide-acetylene flames was studied, using aqueous solutions, organic solvent-water systems, and 100% organic solutions. Efforts were made to relate the viscosity and concentration of organic solvents to absorption. The effects of organic solvents on chemical and interelement interference were studied. The precision of analysis by atomic absorption using both aqueous and organic solutions was compared with that of EDTA titrations. Enhancement in the absorption showed a linear dependence on the logarithm of the product of viscosity and boiling point of 100% organic solutions of the rare earth acetylacetonates. In alcohol-water …

Architectural Rendering, Robert D. Bailey

Graduate Research Papers

While it is the obligation of all teachers of industrial education to keep aware of modern processes and techniques used by industry, the subject of this study is confined to one, architectural rendering. It is the purpose of this study to investigate the theory and application of architectural rendering, to explore the techniques and methods commonly used in architectural rendering for commercial purposes, and lastly to determine whether or not these techniques have any ramifications for teaching in the industrial arts classroom.

Guided Wave Propagation In Cylindrical Domains With Non-Orthogonal Sets Of Normal Modes, Herbert H. Snyder Jan 1973

Guided Wave Propagation In Cylindrical Domains With Non-Orthogonal Sets Of Normal Modes, Herbert H. Snyder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Guided wave propagation is studied for the interior of circularly cylindrical domains; on the (cylindrical) boundary the ratios E2/Hφ and H2/Eφ are assigned functions of frequency and position, called surface impedances. Even in the case where the impedances are independent of position on the wall, the normal modes of propagation (expressed in terms of certain Bessel functions) do not form an orthogonal set on sections of the guide normal to the propagation direction. It follows that mode relative amplitudes cannot be determined by a Fourier-Bessel expansion of steady-state fields given on an input plane. To determine …

Secondary Teacher Education: Where We Are Going At The University Of Iowa, Robert E. Yager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In September of 1970 a grant was awarded by the National Science Foundation to the Science Education Center at the University of Iowa for the development of pre-service programs for teachers of secondary school science. The program was called Iowa-UPSTEP, (Undergraduate Pre-Service Teacher Education Program). The rationale for this program and a report of its progress is a response to "Where We Are Going" at the University of Iowa.
