A Method Of Evaluating Computer Programs For High School Physics, David Broadwater Jan 1981

A Method Of Evaluating Computer Programs For High School Physics, David Broadwater

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Many high schools have access to computer terminals. Such terminals are of limited value if the computer library is not stocked with programs that are integrated into the educational program of the school. There is a need for the evaluation of computer programs with respect to their applicability to various levels of instruction. In this paper, a method of evaluating computer programs for high school physics is outlined.

The Paradox, James Hungerford Jan 1981

The Paradox, James Hungerford

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Recent surveys indicate that many young adults blame science and technology for most of society's problems. On the other hand, an even larger number trust that science and technology will solve these same problems. Their expectations are for spectacular achievements from science and technology. Such expectations often stem from an unawareness of the fundamental nature and limitations of scientific inquiry.

The Natural Forest Communities Of Iowa: A Resource In Trouble, Gary Hightshoe Jan 1981

The Natural Forest Communities Of Iowa: A Resource In Trouble, Gary Hightshoe

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Based on the original United States Land Office survey, it has been estimated that 18 percent of the total state land area was once covered by forest. Today, less than 4 percent of the Iowa landscape remains in forest. In essence, Iowa's forest lands have a value underrated and misunderstood by most of its citizens. Threatened with exhaustion of our natural forest heritage, it is imperative that the citizens of this state awaken at last to the necessity of protecting what is left. The appreciation, conservation, restoration and wise management of our remaining forest resource must play a critical role …

Science Anxiety: How Can We Reduce It?, George Davis Jan 1981

Science Anxiety: How Can We Reduce It?, George Davis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Science anxiety is a new name for a phenomenon that all science teachers, regardless of experience, are familiar with. Science anxiety is a fear that many bright and capable students have of scientific studies. This fear carries with it a conviction that they cannot, regardless of effort, understand science. Science anxiety is a very effective sieve that keeps many talented people from careers in science. Those science anxious students who enter teaching act as carriers of the anxiety, thereby infecting their students. Finally, science anxious students become members of our community and contribute to the growing climate of antiscience attitudes …

Potential New Iowa Multi-Use Crops For Oils And Hydrocarbons, Russell A. Buchanan Jan 1981

Potential New Iowa Multi-Use Crops For Oils And Hydrocarbons, Russell A. Buchanan

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Many green plants contain, on a dry weight basis, more than 5 percent oil plus hydrocarbon that is not concentrated in storage organs. In these plants, oils and hydrocarbons (botanochemicals) are distributed throughout major plant tissues often as the major component of a latex. Although there has been little past interest in processing whole plants for botanochemicals, there is now great interest in these new and renewable sources of raw materials and energy. Various plant species are being regarded as potential "gasoline trees", as possible domestic sources of natural rubber and plastic, as new sources of industrial feedstocks or even …

A Philosophy For Present-Day Education, James L. Kelly Jan 1981

A Philosophy For Present-Day Education, James L. Kelly

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

It seems that public education is being attacked more and more concerning the lack of quality education. In part, what is being challenged are the methods of teaching children, governed by an established and practiced philosophy. Many school systems don't operate with a stated philosophy and therefore cannot implement such. Moreover, it would seem unlikely that one could find two teachers, in such a system, who would be teaching with the same philosophical objectives in mind. In short, there is no consistent "practice what you preach" format for teachers to follow in many school systems.

Group counseling is a social experience designed to deal with the developmental problems and attitudes of individuals in a secure setting. It facilitates the development of new human relations skills and leads to the discovery of new and more acceptable ways of approaching various conflict situations. Counselor's Responsibilities And Student's Needs At The Junior High School Level, Ken H. Winter Jan 1981

Counselor's Responsibilities And Student's Needs At The Junior High School Level, Ken H. Winter

Graduate Research Papers

In the past decade, the necessity for a junior high school counselor seems to have increased more than ever before. Formerly, the child's needs were handled by the teacher through homeroom and classroom guidance programs (Baughman, 1974; Grambs, et. al., 1961). Gradually, socioeconomic forces of the past decades have encouraged a full time specialist, or the equivalent, available in guidance and testing for every 250 to 300 pupils in a junior high school (7th and 8th grades) (Conant, 1960; Tink, 1963).

Comparison Of Perceptions Of Major Problems In Science Education, Jack Gerlovich, Robert Yager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The National Science Foundation has stimulated much thought, analysis and assessment concerning the discipline of science education. The three status studies of K-12 science education have attracted national attention and study (Helgeson, 1978; Stake & Easley, 1978; Weiss, 1978). Nine professional groups have had committees analyze the results of these studies from the perspective of their respective memberships. The National Science Foundation also awarded another large research grant to the University of Colorado called Project Synthesis. This project, under the direction of Norris Harms, has attempted to synthesize the status study reports and the recent data from the National Assessment …
