The Social Behavior Of Undergraduate Music Majors - Are They Socially Different?, Dawn Michelle White Jan 1982

The Social Behavior Of Undergraduate Music Majors - Are They Socially Different?, Dawn Michelle White

Graduate Research Papers

This study will examine two concerns relating to the social patterns of undergraduate music majors at the University of Northern Iowa. The first concern is whether or not undergraduate music majors have different patterns of social interaction and behavior when compared to their non-music major counterparts. In this, the researcher is interested in the truthfulness of many stereotypes that have been placed upon undergraduate music majors by their peers in terms of their so called "unusual" day-to-day activities. Are they quite different at the University of Northern Iowa? The second concern is interested in the inward feeling expressed by music …

Elementary Physics Applied To Automobile Fuel Economy, Franklin D. Trumpy Jan 1982

Elementary Physics Applied To Automobile Fuel Economy, Franklin D. Trumpy

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Science educators, especially physics teachers, are frequently confronted with stories about devices and carburetors that permit ordinary cars to get spectacular fuel economy. The claims often exceed 46 kilometers per liter (110 mpg). By applying basic physics as taught at the high school or college freshman level, one can measure the average power output of an automobile at any speed and calculate the maximum possible fuel economy that can be expected.

A Student Milieu Evaluation Wartburg College, 1981-82, John Douglas Kirchner Jan 1982

A Student Milieu Evaluation Wartburg College, 1981-82, John Douglas Kirchner

Graduate Research Papers

Traditionally, colleges and universities have set up and changed institutional curriculum, policies, services, and physical spaces in an effort to aid in the education of their students. This educational effort unfortunately was often misguided, since it was rarely done on the basis of a systematic survey of student need. Students who did not adjust to the campus environment were either referred to a service to help them make the necessary adjustment or eased out of school.

Limax Amebae In Two Swimming Pools At Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, Lawrence G. Mitchell, Samuel C. Townsend, Kenneth C. Choquette

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Four types of amebae (Acanthamoeba, Hartmanella, Naegleria-like amebae, and a vannellid, probably Platyamoeba) were identified from 2 indoor swimming pools on the Iowa State University campus during January-April 1981. Large numbers of these amebae, and other protozoans and metazoans were found in a yellow-brown (mainly bacterial) floc growing on the pool bottom, in filtering systems, and in recirculation pipes. None of the amebae were found to be pathogenic in laboratory mice. Corrective pool maintenance procedures and laboratory studies of the floc and amebae are described.

Energy Education Begins With Teacher Education, Mike Geil, Daniel S. Sheldon Jan 1982

Energy Education Begins With Teacher Education, Mike Geil, Daniel S. Sheldon

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Since 1973 the price of imported crude oil has escalated from $3.00 a barrel (42 gallons) to an average of over $35 a barrel in 1981. Our national bill for imported oil in 1970 was $3 billion, whereas our current expenditure for imported oil exceeds $81 billion. Within this same time period U.S. crude oil imports more than doubled, while import costs increased twenty-seven fold. This astronomic increase in crude oil prices has helped to reduce the value of American dollars abroad and has served to exacerbate recession and inflation at home.

That All Powerful Textbook In Science Teaching, Robert E. Yager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

NSF Status Studies emphasize the domination of the textbook in K-12 science classrooms in the U.S. Many lament about the power of the text and seek ways of "getting publishers to produce better ones." Are publishers really the bad guys??

Nsta Report, Robert L. Fisher

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

I recently participated in the Board of Directors' meeting of NSTA. I did not see despair, no throwing up of hands to say we have met our match. On the contrary, I saw highly optimistic individuals intent on making lemonade. You will read about these activities in future issues of your journals, but let me take a few minutes to highlight some of the meeting for you.

The Newest Goal For Science Education, Robert E. Yager Jan 1982

The Newest Goal For Science Education, Robert E. Yager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Four years ago Helgeson and his co-workers at the ERIC/SMEAC center at Ohio State reported that the goals in science education were in a period of major transition (Helgeson, et al., 1977). Three years ago NSTA published a working paper entitled, Science Education: Accomplishments and Needs, in which new goals for the discipline were identified (NSTA, 1978). Recently the NSTA Research Committee completed a research project - one facet of which determined the degree of agreement about such major changes in goals as well as an indication of the nature of new goals (Yager, 1980).

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Job Coordinator In Reducing Recidivism At The State Training School, Sharon L. Caldwell

Graduate Research Papers

The State Training School in Eldora, Iowa, is where Iowa Juvenile Courts send their male adjudicated "delinquent" youths. There are five regular cottage units, a reception-diagnostic cottage unit and four specialized living units. The operating capacity is 238 and the average daily population for 1984 was 213 males between 13 and 17 years of age. There are two on-going programs for the students -- clinical and educational.

A Correlational Study Between Piagetian Concrete Reasoning Level And Academic Achievement, Mark Anthony Randall Jan 1982

A Correlational Study Between Piagetian Concrete Reasoning Level And Academic Achievement, Mark Anthony Randall

Graduate Research Papers

Jean Piaget has been identified as one of the great contributors to knowledge in our time. Robinson (1952) lists him in his book, 100 Most Important People in the World Today. During his life he developed the learning theories of genetic epistemology that brought him recognition as the father of modern child psychology. During countless hours of observations performed by him personally, he developed clinical interviewing techniques to reveal the cognitive developmental level of a child. Similarly, all educators are concerned with cognitive development of the learner. The Piagetian clinical interviews glean information on the subject ability to process information …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Materials For A Secondary Level Geometry Course, Andrea Seversen Jan 1982

An Annotated Bibliography Of Materials For A Secondary Level Geometry Course, Andrea Seversen

Graduate Research Papers

The contention is made that high school students experience frustrations in their pursuit of learning Euclidean geometry. Three causes of frustration are assumed: inadequate comprehension of new concepts; lack of a sense of need or usefulness of concepts presented; a lack of initial or sustaining interest in the subject. A further presumption is made that appropriate utilization of multimedia in the study of geometry will alleviate some of these frustrations.

In light of these assumptions and with substantial support for them in literature reviewed, an annotated bibliography of multimedia intended for incorporation into the study of Euclidean geometry and directed …

A New Age For The Universe?, Darrel Hoff Jan 1982

A New Age For The Universe?, Darrel Hoff

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The question of the age of the earth, the solar system, stars galaxies and the whole universe have intrigued man for a long time. The story of Bishop Ussher's use of biblical chronology in the early 1600s to date the creation at 4004 B. C. is the story of the earliest attempt to arrive at an answer to this question. The work of geologists, and physicists during the 1800s called this date into serious question. Investigations based on stratigraphy, salination of the oceans, and heat flow from a cooling earth put the age much greater than Ussher's estimate. Although these …

How Would You Prove The Earth Is Round?, Darrell D. Young Jan 1982

How Would You Prove The Earth Is Round?, Darrell D. Young

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In this day of the Space Age, everyone knows that the earth is round. One merely has to look at a photograph taken from either the moon or an orbiting space satellite to prove the point. But suppose that you do not have a photograph handy or suppose that your viewer refuses to believe that the photo is real. Of course it is rather unlikely that the latter event would occur, but without such a visual aid how would you prove that the earth is round?
