Speaking Politely, Kindly, And Beautifully: Ideologies Of Politeness In Japanese Business Etiquette Training, Cynthia Dickel Dunn
Speaking Politely, Kindly, And Beautifully: Ideologies Of Politeness In Japanese Business Etiquette Training, Cynthia Dickel Dunn
Faculty Work
In recent years, politeness theory has increasingly focused on speakers’ own conceptualizations of polite behavior, viewing politeness concepts as a type of language ideology. This article examines the construction of Japanese politeness concepts in the business etiquette training provided for new employees in Japanese companies. Drawing on participant-observation of business etiquette seminars offered by five training companies, it analyzes how employees are taught to show deference through appropriate honorific use, to speak in ways which are seen as kind or considerate, and to speak and move in ways the instructors define as ‘beautiful.’ The analysis demonstrates how etiquette training conflates …

Degradation Of Algal Palynomorphs On 34-Yr-Old Microscope Slides, Lynn A. Brant
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Reexamination of 34-yr-old microscope slides of palynological preparations reveals the loss and degradation of algal palynomorphs, in particular the green alga Pediastrum and the desmid Pleurotaenium. Results from this study suggest that great caution should be used when referring co archived palynological slides.

A New Plant Record For Iowa: Lactuca Hirsuta (Asteraceae), Thomas L. Eddy
A New Plant Record For Iowa: Lactuca Hirsuta (Asteraceae), Thomas L. Eddy
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
A new record of a native vascular plant, Lactuca hirsuta Muhlenberg ex Nuttall var. sanguinea (Bigelow) Fernald, is reported for Iowa. A specimen was collected in 1983 by the author during a study of the Swaledale railroad prairie in Cerro Gordo County, north central Iowa (Eddy 1988). The plant was inexplicably excluded in the species catalogue when a Swaledale railroad flora was published in 1988; thus, this “new” Iowa record in 2013 was collected 30 years prior. The voucher specimen was “re-discovered” by Dr. Neil A. Harriman at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (OSH), and its identification verified.

Smaf: A Soil Health Assessment Tool, D. L. Karlen, C. D. Nance, D. L. Dinnes, D. W. Meek
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) was developed to help quantify soil quality/health effects of tillage, crop rotation, and other soil management practices. Our objective was to determine if the SMAF could detect soil health differences after growing a single winter triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) crop. Soil samples were collected from 0 to 7.5- and 7.5 to 15- cm depth increments during the 2003 – 2004 and 2004 – 2005 growing seasons near Ames and Lewis, IA, and analyzed for several potential soil quality indicators. The SMAF analysis showed higher soil quality ratings for surface than subsurface samples. It also …

The Vascular Flora Of Clay Prairie State Preserve (Butler County, Iowa): Recommendations To The Iowa State Preserve System, Edwin L. Freese, William R. Norris
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Clay Prairie State Preserve (1.2 ha) is an upland prairie located in Butler County, IA, and represents one of the last remnants of black-soil tallgrass prairie in northeast Iowa. An annotated checklist of the vascular flora of Clay Prairie is presented here, based on a previously published flora of the preserve and recent field work conducted by the authors between 1997 to 2001, and 2008 to 2011. The preserve contains a diverse vascular flora representing 50 families, 145 genera and 214 taxa (174 native to Iowa). In comparison with 26 larger prairies (4 to 121 ha) protected in the Iowa …

Using Tpack To Promote Effective Language Teaching In An Esl/Efl Classroom, Wilson M. Rojas Bugueño
Using Tpack To Promote Effective Language Teaching In An Esl/Efl Classroom, Wilson M. Rojas Bugueño
Graduate Research Papers
Technology integration in English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) using Technological Pedagogical And Content Knowledge (TPACK) (Mishra & Koehler, 2006) seems to be a new territory for teachers and researchers. For this reason, this literature review explores the use of TPACK in the EFL/ESL classroom. In this review, principles, methods and activities related to English teaching are reviewed and discussed. Also, the foundations of TPACK, activity types and their applications not only in other subject areas, but also in the EFL/ESL area are explored. For this purpose, articles, studies and books were consulted …
Comparison Of Student Achievement, Understanding, Enjoyment, And Motivation In Mathematics Units For High-Achieving Fifth Graders With And Without Creative Problem Solving Games, Kalyn Jon Cody
Graduate Research Papers
Students in our public schools often struggle to create deep, personal meaning regarding mathematical concepts. Perhaps our students do not spend enough time studying mathematics during the day. Perhaps our teachers do not have a deep understanding, which leads to problems in teaching at a deep level. Or perhaps our students simply are not motivated to study the subject at a deep level because it does not seem interesting. In this pretest/post-test repeated measures study of 24 fifth grade students in a grade-accelerated mathematics class, a link between achievement scores and understanding of mathematical concepts through the use of invented …
Books, Blogging, And Boredom : The Impact Of One-To-One Computing On Student Engagement And Literacy, Amanda M. Hudson
Books, Blogging, And Boredom : The Impact Of One-To-One Computing On Student Engagement And Literacy, Amanda M. Hudson
Graduate Research Papers
As one-to-one computing infiltrates education across the United States, stakeholders question the impact this technology will have on all involved. Teachers are realizing the effect that one-to-one computing has on the school, classroom, and curriculum as districts jump on the bandwagon and purchase laptops for every student. Research shows that classrooms, including language arts classrooms, incur many positive changes. One such change is the inclusion of new literacies into the curriculum. These new literacies will change how students read and write. Course management systems have also become common in many classrooms; and teachers, students, and parents are learning to negotiate …

The Effectiveness Of Selected Components Upon Childhood Obesity Prevention, Brian Kliegl
The Effectiveness Of Selected Components Upon Childhood Obesity Prevention, Brian Kliegl
Graduate Research Papers
In the past few decades there has been a pandemic, but it is not an infectious or a communicable disease it is childhood obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC (2011 ), the definition of obesity in children is having a Body Mass Index (BMI) equal to or greater than the 95th percentile for age, weight and height. The BMI percentile indicates the relative position of the child's BMI among children of the same sex and age. Other weight categories used with children and teens are underweight, healthy weight, and overweight. Underweight is defined as BMI …

Alignment Of A 9th Grade Earth Science Curriculum With The Iowa Core, Courtney Elizabeth Giesel

In 1990, education was brought to the forefront of federal law with the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The Act was continued during the Bush administration under the name No Child Left Behind (NCLB) (P.L, 2002). These laws became the framework for guiding state education policy (Massell, 2008). Education began experiencing growing pains as lawmakers decided there needed to be better continuity within the American education system, hence the birth of standards-based education.

It is amazing to think about the transition of the computer's importance and the abundance of computers within schools. In the last couple of decades, the main purpose has shifted from teaching basic clerical work, to everyday use. It has gone from schools with a single computer room full of bulky desktops, to multiple computer labs, mobile laptop carts, and even personal laptops. Today, advances in technology are taken for granted as we continuously find ourselves surrounded by it. In 2000, there were approximately 1000 American schools using a 1:1 model, which totaled 150,000 laptops (Johnstone, 2003; Dunleavy, Dextert, & …

The first goal is to take advantage of the …
Science Teaching Methods That Work With At-Risk Students In An Urban Setting, Devin Bryce Yeoman
Science Teaching Methods That Work With At-Risk Students In An Urban Setting, Devin Bryce Yeoman
Graduate Research Papers
Urban science education programs have a plethora of problems associated with them. These include, but are not limited to: a shortage of qualified teachers, declining infrastructure, limited resources, and lack of student interest. Along with these problems, a significant number of students attending urban schools are at-risk of dropping out of school. These students tend to come from low socioeconomic households, they speak English as a second language, and/or they are already low-performing students. Each of these factors places a student at risk of failing. Research studies focusing on improving academic success in inner-city science programs were read and analyzed …
