Invention Through Form And Function Analogy, Audrey C. Rule

Faculty Book Gallery

Invention through Form and Function Analogy is an invention book for teachers and other leaders working with youth who are involving students in the invention process. The book consists of an introduction and set of nine learning cycle formatted lessons for teaching the principles of invention through the science and engineering design principles of form and function. An appendix contains sets of color, illustrated cards to be printed onto cardstock paper and used for sorting and sequencing activities during the lessons. This set of lessons has been field-tested with elementary and middle school students by teachers and was improved through …

Activities For Challenging Gifted Learners By Increasing Complexity In The Common Core, Alyssa Mckeone, Lenora Caruso, Kailyn Bettle, Ashley Chase, Bridget Bryson, Jean S. Schneider, Audrey C. Rule

Open Educational Resources

Gifted learners need opportunities for critical and creative thinking to stretch their minds and imaginations. Strategies for increasing complexity in the four core areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies were addressed using the Common Core and Iowa Core Standards through several methods. Descriptive adjective object boxes were created, based on the themes of bees, surface area and volume, cultural beliefs and mummies, and bee colony collapse disorder. The sets of materials were used in various ways to increase the complexity of instruction in the core subject areas of literacy, mathematics, social studies, and science. The descriptive adjective …

Faculty Work

We have investigated the vibrational properties of van der Waals heterostructures of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), specifically MoS2/WSe2 and MoSe2/MoS2 heterobilayers and twisted MoS2 bilayers, by means of ultralow-frequency Raman spectroscopy. We discovered Raman features (at 30–40 cm−1) that arise from the layer-breathing mode (LBM) vibration between the two incommensurate TMD monolayers in these structures. The LBM Raman intensity correlates strongly with the suppression of photoluminescence that arises from interlayer charge transfer. The LBM is generated only in bilayer areas with direct layer-layer contact and an atomically clean interface. Its frequency also …

Factors Affecting Economic Growth In Developing Countries, Parash Upreti Apr 2015

Factors Affecting Economic Growth In Developing Countries, Parash Upreti

Major Themes in Economics

This paper aims to identify the factors affecting economic growth in developing countries. It uses cross-country data for 76 countries from 2010, 2005, 2000, and 1995. A high volume of exports, plentiful natural resources, longer life expectancy, and higher investment rates have positive impacts on the growth of per capita gross domestic product in developing countries. Much research needs to be done to distinguish the causes of growth in developing countries, as the scope of existing research is limited due to a lack of reliable data.

Manipulation Of Subsurface Carbon Nanoparticles In Bi2sr2cacu2o8+Δ Using A Scanning Tunneling Microscope, A. J. Stollenwerk, N. Hurley, B. Beck, K. Spurgeon, Tim Kidd, G. Gu Mar 2015

Manipulation Of Subsurface Carbon Nanoparticles In Bi2sr2cacu2o8+Δ Using A Scanning Tunneling Microscope, A. J. Stollenwerk, N. Hurley, B. Beck, K. Spurgeon, Tim Kidd, G. Gu

Faculty Work

We present evidence that subsurface carbon nanoparticles in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ can be manipulated with nanometer precision using a scanning tunneling microscope. High-resolution images indicate that most of the carbon particles remain subsurface after transport observable as a local increase in height as the particle pushes up on the surface. Tunneling spectra in the vicinity of these protrusions exhibit semiconducting characteristics with a band gap of approximately 1.8 eV, indicating that the incorporation of carbon locally alters the electronic properties near the surface.
