Value Of Reading Aloud To Children, Sandy K. Aronson Jan 1992

Value Of Reading Aloud To Children, Sandy K. Aronson

Graduate Research Papers

Guiding children into the world of quality literature is one of the greatest gifts parents and teachers can give to their children. Enjoyment of a piece is the first purpose of literature. Literature develops imagination, offers vicarious experiences, and develops insight into human behavior. Through quality literature, one can respond to the universality of human conflict. Literature can constitute a curricular base as it provides models of language and exposure to the meanings provided by the various genres and offers natural connections between the comprehension/composition processes (Huck, Hepler, & Hickman, 1987).

Voice Technologies In Advanced Computer Systems, Jodie M. Cone Jan 1992

Voice Technologies In Advanced Computer Systems, Jodie M. Cone

Graduate Research Papers

Recently there has been a surge of interest using voice technologies in advanced workstations. The motivation for voice is its role as the primary channel of human-to-human communication, which ties in with current research in which computers are used to facilitate group problem solving, in enhanced user interfaces, and office computing. Taken broadly, the use of speech as a command and data channel may require digital recording and playback techniques, speech recognition, text-to-speech synthesis, and telephone interface equipment. The big payoff will be to build systems, using these technologies, to allow computers to become a part of the infrastructure of …

Spelling And Whole Language, Rosemary C. Geiken Jan 1992

Spelling And Whole Language, Rosemary C. Geiken

Graduate Research Papers

A current trend in language arts programs in elementary schools is the shift from skills-based instruction to a focus on emergent literacy and whole language (Watson, 1988). Teachers are setting aside textbooks and are involving children in language activities that are functional and purposeful to them (Goodman, 1986). Nowhere is this instructional trend more obvious than in the area of writing. It is viewed as a recursive process in creating meaning (Graves & Stuart, 1985; Calkins, 1986).

The Non-Problem Of Political Correctness, Randall C. Schluter Jan 1992

The Non-Problem Of Political Correctness, Randall C. Schluter

Iowa Journal of Communication

The PC hysteria probably will pass, as the mass media shifts its attention to fresher news. The nation's educational agenda is much too crowded for manufactured stories about the "new McCarthyism" to hold center stage for long. The real danger of this highly publicized academic "problem" is the residue of attitudes that might remain, influencing policy decisions about course content, educational approach, and even hiring. It is unlikely that any instructors will be tarred as PC Brown Shirts, but educator should take seriously the charges by Searle and other traditionalists that alternative perspectives are intellectually illegitimate. An educator worried about …

Figures To Teach: Tropology And Public Speaking, Monica C. Johnstone Jan 1992

Figures To Teach: Tropology And Public Speaking, Monica C. Johnstone

Iowa Journal of Communication

Historically, both oratory and tropology have been major areas of concern for rhetoric. Public speaking still gets its share of attention. But why isn't figuration a major concern in speech today? Though no teacher or text of speech would undervalue the role of language in persuasion, we have neglected the vocabulary which affords us an indispensable looking-glass for scrutiny of language and its effects. This paper is my attempt to regain some of the original wide conception of the place of tropes in our speech pedagogy. Fearing that the loss of this once and future generative means has gone almost …

Promoting Children's Oral Language Development Through Story Retelling, Kathy M. Meyer Jan 1992

Promoting Children's Oral Language Development Through Story Retelling, Kathy M. Meyer

Graduate Research Papers

Meaningful language experiences offered to children at a young age nurture their emerging literacy. These experiences encourage children to be active participants in the language processes (Bredekamp, 1987). Their involvement in the language processes can be greatly enhanced through a quality literature base (Strickland & Morrow, 1989b). One type of literature-based experience that facilitates children 1 s emerging language abilities is the oral retelling of stories that they have heard or read (Magee & Sutton-Smith, 1983). Retellings resemble a long-established form of behavior called 11 telling about 11 (Brown & Cambourne, 1987). Telling about something that has happened is a …

Nurturing Student Responses Through Read Aloud Experiences, Linda A. Pitt

Graduate Research Papers

The public is concerned about the decline of reading scores. National reports label the United States a nation at risk educationally. Further complicating matters, many students who can read are choosing not to read, either for information or pleasure.

Wisc-R And Wisc-Iii Aptitude Scores: How Comparable Are They?, Timothy John Fisher Jan 1992

Wisc-R And Wisc-Iii Aptitude Scores: How Comparable Are They?, Timothy John Fisher

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the comparability of the WISC-Rand WISC-III subtest and scale scores. The Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Organization, and Freedom from Distractibility indices were also examined for comparability. The researcher administered the WISC-Rand WISC-III in a counterbalanced design to 20 rural, Caucasian, midwestern children ranging in age from 8 to 12 years old. On both the WISC-Rand WISC-III, means and standard deviations were computed for the subtest scaled scores, scaled index scores, and Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQs. Correlation coefficients were obtained for the WISC-Rand WISC-III subtests, indices, and scales with two tailed dependent t tests computed to determine …

Parallel Form Test-Retest Reliability And Predictive Validity Of A Curriculum-Based Measurement Academic Readiness Test, Stanley F. Hanus

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to help a local school district in rural Iowa determine the reliability and predictive validity of a Curriculum-Based Measurement Academic Readiness Test (CBM-ART). The subjects were 85 kindergarten students and 77 first grade students enrolled in regular education. The total sample of 162 students was approximately 88% Caucasian, 8% Native American, 2% Hispanic, and 2% Asian. Parallel forms of the test were administered at a 14-day interval, with resulting reliability coefficients ranging from .76 to .94 with a median coefficient of .88. Validity coefficients computed between CBM measures administered in kindergarten and Iowa Tests …

An Investigation Of Selected At Risk Factors In Rural High Schools In The Midwest, Kevin M. Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated the use of selected at risk factors to predict student high school success. In addition, academic and social viewpoints of students in grades 9-11 who had been retained were investigated, as were the perceptions of their parents. The sample was drawn from two public school districts which were representative of rural schools in a Midwestern state. A total of 373 students in grades 9-11 from both districts participated. Data on 26 selected at risk factors were gathered from school records and personnel to determine predictors of school success. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, step-wise multiple regression, and …

Issue One: Curriculum That Adequately Addresses The Concerns And Needs Of People Of Color In Education [Charging], Marilyn Charging

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

For too long, many of our educational institutions viewed students as "all the same," with little, if any, consideration given to values, traditions, and behaviors of people of color. Obviously, the melting pot theory enabled our schools to carve out a curriculum which remains Eurocentric in its perspective and beliefs. This perspective is highly incongruent with our ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse society; it is especially incongruent with American Indian people who continue to retain their tribal languages, customs, lifestyles, and value systems.

Focus Area Five: Improving The School Performance Of All Children [Redalen], Joan Redalen Jan 1991

Focus Area Five: Improving The School Performance Of All Children [Redalen], Joan Redalen

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The major issue addressing the school is improving the school performance of all children, not the narrow perspective of improving the performance of at-risk students. The focus must be on changing the cultural norms of the school which have unintentionally contributed to the alienation of many students from the system and indeed may have had a causal relationship to students' lack of academic achievement.

To improve school performance for all students, all staff must focus on the ways the school can and must meet two of what Dr. William Glasser identifies as basic human needs: the need for belonging, and …

The Application Of Student Development Theory In Multicultural Programming, Sharon Kay Johannsen Jan 1991

The Application Of Student Development Theory In Multicultural Programming, Sharon Kay Johannsen

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to examine the application of student development theory in multicultural programming. Part I takes a look at the theoretical models of Hoopes (1979) and Katz (1984). Bridges (1980, 1988) offered insight into ideas from the corporate world which may apply directly to related issues in higher education. Part II looks at the application of theory from first an administrative and then a student affairs approach. Combined, both approaches prove valuable for the institution as a whole to utilize effective models and implement multicultural programming. Part Ill offers implications and advances the discussion of issues, …
