In Their Footsteps: Women Faculty Of Wartburg College 1914–1945, Susan Kosche Vallem
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to investigate the hiring and inclusion of women faculty members in private higher education, using Wartburg College as a case study. This study identified and described the educational policies and procedures at Wartburg from 1914 to 1945 related to the hiring of women faculty at Wartburg College.
While the history of women in higher education is well-chronicled, much less is written on the impetus and motivation for hiring women faculty and their impact on the institutions themselves. This dissertation adds to that specific body of knowledge.
Three research questions were investigated in this study: …
Public Sphere: The Past And The Present, Ruoyun Bai
Public Sphere: The Past And The Present, Ruoyun Bai
Iowa Journal of Communication
Originated in 17th and 18th century Europe, the concept of "public sphere" is currently in wide use throughout scholarship concerned with a variety of topics related to democratic practices in contemporary societies. The context in which contemporary public sphere is discussed is completely different from that two hundred years ago, we are bound to lose a lot if we do not re-conceptualize the "public sphere." The term "public sphere" can be highly relevant and useful today if we redefine this term and keep the definition open-ended. The purpose of this essay is to flush out this argument.

Feminist theory has long been concerned with identity politics, and feminists have grappled with the ideologies and identities of race, sex, gender, and sexuality, to name only a few. Psychoanalytic theorist Teresa Brennan and postmodern theorist Judith Butler combine feminism with their respective fields in their quests to figure out how subjectivities are created, and why some people are objectified or created as objects, while others are created as subjects. Literature is an excellent vehicle for studying subject/object creation and identity politics, because it often mirrors “real” life, because literature can have such an impact on the lives of those …

The Night Travelers: The Underground Railroad In Iowa, Peggy Whitaker
Graduate Research Papers
This book is a descriptive and detailed account of the activities of the people that were involved in the Underground Railroad (UGRR) in Iowa. These activities also led to the Civil War and the abolishment of slavery. The history of the Underground Railroad in Iowa has not been told in an extended narrative. Fragments of the story appear in some historical texts but most information is scattered among uncollected documents such as diaries, records, and newspaper accounts. Historical facts not known before have been pulled together in one volume giving brief biographical sketches of the people and places directly involved …

Picture Storybooks For Speech Communications Curriculum And Extracurricular Activities: An Annotated Bibliography, Del Brink
Graduate Research Papers
High school speech instructors frequently use picture storybooks in their curriculum. Picture storybooks differ from illustrated storybooks and picture books because they are the only type of the three that includes a balanced union between text and illustrations. An observation made at a high school speech contest in Iowa was the impetus for the formation of a bibliography of picture storybooks suitable for speech contest work. The researcher located, read, annotated, and categorized books reviewed in The Horn Book Magazine between 1989 and 1992. Of the 497 books read, 363 formed a bibliography of picture storybooks divided among these categories: …

Home Schooling: Why Some Parents Of Gifted Children Are Choosing It As An Alternative To The Public School, Patricia C. Seamans
Home Schooling: Why Some Parents Of Gifted Children Are Choosing It As An Alternative To The Public School, Patricia C. Seamans
Graduate Research Papers
Home schooling and special programs for gifted children emerged as separate issues in the late 1970s and 1980s. Naisbitt (1982) identifies home schooling as one of the examples of the megatrend away from institutional help and toward self help ln the 80s. A sign of educators' interest in the topic is noted by the fact that 85% of the research done concerning the success of home schooling has been done in the 1980s. Meanwhile, by their own choice or by state mandate, many public schools have implemented programs to serve the gifted in their district. Ignorance of the facts about …

An Analysis Of Historical Studies Of Literacy Standards From Three Epochs In American Elementary Education, Karen Elizabeth Stinson Hanus
An Analysis Of Historical Studies Of Literacy Standards From Three Epochs In American Elementary Education, Karen Elizabeth Stinson Hanus
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The task of determining the standards of literacy in an historical epoch, the accurate assessment of children's ability to read, and the achievement of universal literacy are like the impossible endeavor of Tantalus in Greek mythology. As one comes closer to achieving one's goal, it changes and moves further away, forever just out of reach. So it is in trying to ascertain absolutes in the field of literacy. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to demonstrate that one definition of literacy is not possible because literacy standards depend upon historical context.
Prominent selected historians' studies of literacy were examined …

Native Trees In An Urban Area: A Case Study Of The Waterloo Metropolitan Area Black Hawk County, Iowa, Alice Christine Robbins
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study investigates the history and role of the native forest in an urban area of about 100 square miles, encompassing the cities of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Evansdale in Black Hawk County, Iowa. It examines various human influences in an attempt to determine how important each has been in preserving or destroying the natural forest.
The original forests in the study area were concentrated along the rivers and adjacent bluffs. The most serious impacts to the upland forests have been agriculture, residential and commercial development, whereas the floodplain forests have been most affected by industrial expansion, gravel mining, flood …

Saudi Arabia’S And Egypt’S Public And School Libraries, Donna Marie Hoeksema
Graduate Research Papers
This research was based on a concern for libraries in third world countries. A study of literature about public and school libraries in two developing countries in the Middle East was conducted. Based on the evidence that certain conditions were present in the United States and Europe before library development began, this researcher isolated eight of these conditions to research whether they were in existence or growing in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Two hypotheses were-tested. First, political stability was evident. Secondly, evidence of growth in the following seven conditions were studied: education, economic growth, government commitment towards libraries, urbanization, presence …

Possible Reasons For The Growth Of Peace Studies In The 1980s, Joan Marie Phelan Haack
Possible Reasons For The Growth Of Peace Studies In The 1980s, Joan Marie Phelan Haack
Graduate Research Papers
Peace movements in many different forms and degrees have been present throughout history. But advocacy of peace studies in educational institutions is quite a recent phenomenon. While a few groups have advocated peace studies since the 1950s, a preponderance of curricular materials and literature did not appear until the 1980s (Scott, 1984).
An Historical Look At Honors Student Characteristics In Higher Education, Daniel E. Key
An Historical Look At Honors Student Characteristics In Higher Education, Daniel E. Key
Graduate Research Papers
Having the opportunity to listen in on several Honors Committee Meetings at the University of Northern Iowa proved to be very thought provoking. The UNI Honors Committee had been discussing plans for a new honors program design when a question was asked, one that proved to be very important and needs serious consideration. "What type of student are we looking for?" What seemed to be a simple question with a simple answer gave rise to further questions and an issue which is the heart of any honors program. What characteristics will potential honors students possess? How will they be selected? …
Reading Readiness: Definitions And Assessment Circa 1950 And 1980, Sharon Rae Erwin
Reading Readiness: Definitions And Assessment Circa 1950 And 1980, Sharon Rae Erwin
Graduate Research Papers
This review proposes to discover how educators defined reading readiness and what they recommended relative to the cognitive skills assessment of reading readiness in 1950 and 1980. 2 A second purpose is to discover if standardized assessment devices reflect the definitions and recommendations. There is an ever increasing need to know what cognitive skills a child should be equipped with before learning to read. Today's society has increased pressure for academic achievement of elementary children. This pressure has resulted in early introduction of formal reading instruction in first grade and much attention to the reading readiness program in kindergarten (Hoffman …

The Approach Of An Iowa School District To Program Reorganization, Bruce Lee Tepfer
The Approach Of An Iowa School District To Program Reorganization, Bruce Lee Tepfer
Graduate Research Papers
The growth and development of public education in this country has been documented in scores of textbooks and countless other publications. Such accounts often focus on the external forces in society to which the schools have responded. Those accounts have understandably not often focused on the growth and development of individual school systems. When school systems have been singled out for a special study, they have usually been large urban systems or systems on the "cutting edge" of educational innovation or reform.

A Socio-Historical Study Of Convict Labor In Iowa, William Farrell
A Socio-Historical Study Of Convict Labor In Iowa, William Farrell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Forms of punishment are historically specific. They are only realized in particular economic, political and ideological conditions. In this sense, imprisonment is a relatively recent historical phenomenon. Its rise can be argued to have accompanied the emergence of a modern capitalist market system. This thesis attempts to merge sociological and historical approaches to the study of penal policy by studying the development of convict labor in the United States and Iowa in relation to the development of the American economy. Convict labor was the country's dominant penal practice from the Civil War to the Great Depression in the United States …
