The Genus Ceanothus L. In Iowa, B. Shimek Jan 1921

The Genus Ceanothus L. In Iowa, B. Shimek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The low shrubs known as New Jersey Tea, belonging to the Genus Ceanothus, were once very abundant throughout Iowa, occurring chiefly on the prairies, and sometimes in dry, open woods and along the borders of drier thickets. On account of their long, tough roots they interfered with the breaking of the prairie, and the commoner species, C. americanus, known as "shoestring" or "red-root," was by no means popular with the pioneers. Perhaps for this reason, and because they were so common, these attractive shrubs were seldom cultivated in this state.

The Vegetation Of Cape Blanco, Morton E. Peck Jan 1920

The Vegetation Of Cape Blanco, Morton E. Peck

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

To most of us the name of Cape Blanco has a familiar sound, bringing back as it does recollections of the geography lessons of our early school days, when we learned that it was the most westerly point of the United States south of Alaska. We may possibly have learned also that it is one of the most dangerous points for vessels on our western coast. Beyond these two brief facts the knowledge of very few of us extends.

Notes On The Distribution Of Midsummer Bee Plants In The Mississippi Zone Of Clayton County, Ada Hayden Jan 1920

Notes On The Distribution Of Midsummer Bee Plants In The Mississippi Zone Of Clayton County, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

With intent to determine (1) what plants were available to bees in late summer, (2) how these plants were located with reference to water reservoirs and (3) which of these plants were most valuable to the bee, some observations were made in Clayton County, Iowa, August 20 to September 9, 1919. The vicinity of McGregor, Beulah, Garnavillo, Guttenberg, Clayton. Prairie-du-Chien, and some of the adjacent islands of the Mississippi about McGregor were visited. Since the water supply is related to the topography and the distribution of plants is relative to both these factors, the geology and topography should be kept …

The Use Of The Terms Flint And Chert, Waldo S. Glock Jan 1920

The Use Of The Terms Flint And Chert, Waldo S. Glock

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Reference to almost any two text books in geology will show that there are different usages for the terms flint and chert. Perhaps much of the confusion is due to the fact that the origin of these substances is unknown, in which case exact definition at this time would be premature. Whatever the reason it seems advisable to bring out the variability of definition, if for no other purpose than to state a problem without attempting its solution. Blackwelder & Barrows- Elements of Geology, 1911, page 39. Flint is defined as "a very compact, dark grey, siliceous rock." Farther on, …

The Moss And Lichen Flora Of Western Emmet County (An Annotated List Of The Bryophytes And Lichens Of The High Lake And Des Moines River Region), B. O. Wolden Jan 1919

The Moss And Lichen Flora Of Western Emmet County (An Annotated List Of The Bryophytes And Lichens Of The High Lake And Des Moines River Region), B. O. Wolden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The prairie region does not, as a rule, offer a very rich field for the student of mosses and lichens. However, the territory which this paper attempts to cover does present several features of interest not only to such students but to the general botanist as well. For here we have not only the level prairie, but also lakes and deep woods, dry wooded ridges and shady ravines and hillsides.

A Century Of Iowa Geology, Charles Keyes Jan 1919

A Century Of Iowa Geology, Charles Keyes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The first centennary of a science in Iowa is upon us. History of the sciences in the commonwealth now goes back beyond the span of our statehood. It transgresses a date when even a name for our state was yet unknown. In Iowa, by many years, claims to first recognition for geology antedate those of every other natural science. Curiously enough this earliest Iowa episode is also the most important geological event for the entire continent during a hundred years. It is even worldwide in some of its aspects. Nor are these early observations alone in their great significance. During …

Notes On The Birds Of South Dakota, With A Preliminary List For Union County, T. C. Stephens Jan 1918

Notes On The Birds Of South Dakota, With A Preliminary List For Union County, T. C. Stephens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is prepared for the primary purpose of publishing a few interesting or unusual records for the state of South Dakota which have been very kindly placed in my possession by Mr. A. J. Anderson, of Sioux City, Iowa. Mr. Anderson, in his professional occupation as a taxidermist, has received many specimens from a radius of two or three hundred miles, and the present paper was conceived for the purpose of placing on record such of these specimens from South Dakota (and two or three from North Dakota) as seemed worthy. At the same time it seemed that it …

Notes On The Floristic Features Of A Prairie Province In Central Iowa, Ada Hayden Jan 1918

Notes On The Floristic Features Of A Prairie Province In Central Iowa, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The primeval prairie of Iowa is fast vanishing. This region where grass grew tall and prairie fires yearly swept over expanses bounded by the horizon or broken here and there by zones of forest along the streams, man, one of the most important of ecological forces, has selected for his permanent habitat. The prairie of former years now lingers in small patches bounded by wire fences and known as hay fields; or where the less ambitious farmer has failed to insert an arterial system of tile, occasional sloughs and swamps furnish homes for hosts of sturdy cattails, slim reeds, plumy …

Notes On Some Pileate Hydnaceae From Iowa, Guy West Wilson Jan 1916

Notes On Some Pileate Hydnaceae From Iowa, Guy West Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Hydnaceae, or spine fungi, is one of the smaller families of the Agaricales, or, as they were known to the older mycologists, the Hymenomycetes, numbering as it does only about five hundred species. Of these some are widely dispersed and rather common while others are quite sporadic or even local in their occurrence. Only a few members of the family are common in our state, yet their number is more considerable than the published accounts would indicate, as but four species appear to have been recorded from Iowa.

A Modern School, Abraham Flexner Jan 1916

A Modern School, Abraham Flexner

History of Education Book Gallery

A Modern School is a 23-page occasional paper, written by Abraham Flexner and published in 1916 by The General Education Board. Flexner (1866-1959) was an American educator and education reformer. The occasional paper presented here addresses many of the perceived failings of the public school system circa 1916 and suggests several reforms. The General Education Board was established by John D. Rockefeller in 1903. According to the Rockefeller Foundation, the board was established to aid education in the U.S. without distinction of race, sex or creed, and was active in promoting the public school movement in the early part of …

The Lithogenesis Of The Sediments, Francis M. Van Tuyl Jan 1916

The Lithogenesis Of The Sediments, Francis M. Van Tuyl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There are few lines of investigation in geology which promise more fruitful returns than the lithogenesis of the sediments. The sedimentary rocks have from the first been sadly neglected although the igneous and metamorphic groups have been systematically and more or less intensively studied both in the field and in the laboratory. Even the megascopic characters of the sediments have for the most part been indefinitely and vaguely described and petrographic examinations have until recently rarely been made. Descriptive terms have been indiscriminately used and such important features as mud cracks and many others equally as significant have in many …

A Correlation Of The Peneplains Of The Driftless Area, Urban B. Hughes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The conclusions reached in this paper in regard to the erosional history of the Driftless Area are the results of evidence secured from three sources: (1) Field work during the summer of 1915, carried on by the writer in the Baraboo district and the Richland Center quadrangle, Wisconsin, has furnished direct evidence for the northern portion of the area under consideration. (2) The literature on the subject has been used freely, the Lancaster-Mineral Point folio by Grant and Burchard having proven especially valuable. (3) The details of the Elizabeth and Galena quadrangles were furnished by Prof. A. C. Trowbridge under …

Some Unique Niagaran Cephalopods, A. O. Thomas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Among the paleontological collections at the State University of Iowa are some unique cephalopod remains. It is the purpose of this paper to call attention to a few of them and it is hoped that at some later time the rich Niagaran fauna of which these are a part shall receive more extensive treatment.
