"Tradition is the enemy of progress." Dr. Julius Klein, Assistant Secretary of Commerce, advises young people to adopt this as their slogan if they wish to make for themselves successful pl aces in the business world. To train these embryo business men and women is the business of the public schools. Geography contributes to training for commerce more than any other science. Have geography teachers adopted the same slogan?

Heliantheae Of Iowa Ii, M. Rae Johns Jan 1930

Heliantheae Of Iowa Ii, M. Rae Johns

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The first paper on Heliantheae of Iowa included the genera Galinsoga, Eclipta, Actinomeris, Parthenium, Polymnia, Ambrosia, Iva, and Xanthium. This list was made up of the introduced, the doubtful, and some of the obnoxious weed species of the Tribe Heliantheae. The review covered the history and the distribution of the species in the United States and in Iowa. In the descriptions of the species, emphasis was laid on the minute details of the floral structures in the effort to bring out the distinctive and possibly hitherto unnoted features that mark the species.

The Status Of The Biological Sciences In The High Schools Of Iowa, C. W. Lantz Jan 1930

The Status Of The Biological Sciences In The High Schools Of Iowa, C. W. Lantz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the germination tests of alfalfa seed in the spring of 1930, one seed was discovered with two embryos. They were both normal in all structures, equal in size and behaved normally in germination. Multiple embryo sacs in the ovules of alfalfa are frequent, but it has been supposed that not more than one is able to mature and function. The presence of two embryos is evidence that two embryo sacs may mature and function.

Has Commercial Geography Been Left On Your Doorstep, Alison E. Aitchison May 1929

Has Commercial Geography Been Left On Your Doorstep, Alison E. Aitchison

Science Bulletin

If one of the chief aims of a teacher is to induce her pupils to know and love a subject which she herself knows and loves, then commercial geography in many an Iowa high school is in a sorry plight. In cases too numerous to cite, the home econ- omics teacher, the mathematics teacher, the physics teacher, the English teacher, - in fact anyone who is so unfortunate as to have one period of the day unfilled by his or her own special subject, - Is likely to have that foundling child, commercial geography, left on the doorstep.

The Teaching Of Physiography, E. J. Cable Jan 1929

The Teaching Of Physiography, E. J. Cable

Science Bulletin

It is quite unfortunate that a subject as valuable as physiography finds such a small patronage among our high school pupils. This is probably due partly to the fact that there is still a lack of agreement among teachers as to the content or classification of the subject. In some high schools physiography is required of all freshmen. Often it goes under the title of "general science" or "modern geography."

Notes On Iowa Mosses. I, Lucy M. Cavanagh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Work on the unidentified Iowa moss material in the herbarium of the State University has brought to light a number of forms that are worthy of note. This collection of mosses, a small part of which is here reported, is the accumulation of many seasons' work, and nothing has been published concerning it excepting Dr. T. E. Savage's list and the very short lists by Dr. Shimek and the writer published in 1915.

What is a perfect recitation? In the fifteenth chapter, page 201 of Dewey's "How We Think" will be found a statement of Herbart's formal steps of instruction. They have been designated as the five perfect steps of a recitation. As Dewey says, "These five steps have had greater and better influence on the 'hearing of lessons' than all other methods put together." Dewey further states "that the underlying notion of these steps is that no matter h ow subjects vary in scope and detail there is one and only one 'best' way of mastering them since there is a 'single …
