Genetic Variation Within A Broadly Distributed Chewing Louse Genus (Thomomydoecus), Clarissa Elizabeth Bruns Jan 2020

Genetic Variation Within A Broadly Distributed Chewing Louse Genus (Thomomydoecus), Clarissa Elizabeth Bruns

Honors Program Theses

No broad study has been conducted to examine the genetics of Thomomydoecus species and their patterns of geographic variation. Chewing lice and their parasite-host relationships with pocket gophers have been studied as a key example of cophylogeny (Demastes et al., 2012). Despite this, genetic data on interspecific and intraspecific variation in Thomomydoecus is unexplored, and prior studies consisted within the narrow frame of one complex or species and its relative host gopher. This project collected, and analyzed genetic data, then generated phylogenetic trees. Many of the existing relationships between Thomomydoecus species was confirmed, and there were a number of unexpected …

Western Media Coverage Of International News: A Content Analysis Of Associated Press Coverage Of Africa, Adukwu Samuel Atadoga Jan 2020

Western Media Coverage Of International News: A Content Analysis Of Associated Press Coverage Of Africa, Adukwu Samuel Atadoga

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examines how the Western media frames its coverage of Africa and this impact on Westerners’ views of Africa. To develop the hypothesis and provide the data needed to answer the research questions, I reviewed the literature on framing, the determinants of international news coverage, as well as international media coverage. Newspapers were my data sources, and using LexisNexis with the key word “Africa,” I searchedthe online news service of the Associated Press(AP). Thissearch yielded 1,000 articles and was reduced by including only those published between January,2015 and January,2016,and then using random sampling. The final number of articles analyzed …

Alaska National Parks And Indigenous Peoples: Collaboration For A Protected Future, Siobhan Mctiernan Jan 2020

Alaska National Parks And Indigenous Peoples: Collaboration For A Protected Future, Siobhan Mctiernan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research examines the relationships between National Parks and Indigenous communities across the state of Alaska. National Parks as a government agency can be perceived in a negative way; but in Alaska, while there are issues and limitations, parks are going beyond policy guidelines to work with communities and help build a resilient future for both the parks and the local people. This work dives into the National Parks policies and practices, projects resulting from engagement of community stakeholders, perceptions of engagement, community capitals, and sustainable development. In particular, the study investigates how these policies, practices, and interactions ultimately contribute …

Festivals As A Sustainable Development Tool: Case Study Of Teriberka, Russia, Maria Monakhova Jan 2020

Festivals As A Sustainable Development Tool: Case Study Of Teriberka, Russia, Maria Monakhova

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Sustainable development refers to positive economic, social, and environment changes brought both locally and globally, creating a better world for individuals and future generations. Sustainable development in the Arctic shares the same approach, yet the smallness and remoteness of the Arctic regions often present a challenge to its implementation (Larsen & Huskey, 2015). I believe that the remarkable beauty, culture, history, and geography of these territories may generate positive returns for sustainable development through the organization of festivals. This paper examines the Teriberka festival taking place in a small same-name village in the Russian Arctic. The questions raised are what …

Utilization Of Machine Learning Algorithms To Support Retail Chain Store Location Decisions, Petr Grin Jan 2020

Utilization Of Machine Learning Algorithms To Support Retail Chain Store Location Decisions, Petr Grin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Businesses use GIS software to build spatial business models to have possibility to analyze customers, competitors or markets not only in terms of finance, but also in terms of their behavior in space. Specifically, geomarketing methods are used to maximize profit when searching for places to open new factories, shops, restaurants, or expand chain of cafes. The main geomarketing approach is to identify the optimal location based on socio-economic data, as well as on the criteria that are necessary for this type of business (suitability model).

Traditionally the Maxent model, a type of an ecological niche model (ENM), is used …

A Ground Based Investigation Of Snow Metamorphism Using An Energy Flux Model And Hyperspectral Imaging Across Cropland, Grassland And Barren Surface In Northeast Iowa, Ayan Sasmal Jan 2020

A Ground Based Investigation Of Snow Metamorphism Using An Energy Flux Model And Hyperspectral Imaging Across Cropland, Grassland And Barren Surface In Northeast Iowa, Ayan Sasmal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Snow is unstable under natural environmental conditions; it undergoes metamorphism that can be measurable with an energy flux model. The demand for snow research is increasing due to its importance for maintaining Earth’s energy balance and hydrological applications. Snow metamorphism is a process of transformation of snow particles with an expense of surface free energy. Very few studies have been completed on snow metamorphism in grassland, cropland and barren surfaces that needs farther investigation. In this study, an attempt was made to measure winter snow metamorphism with physical based model and detecting snow metamorphism by using hyperspectral imaging spectroradiameter in …

The Case For Hyrcanus Ii As The “Wicked Priest” And A Pirate: Evidence From Neglected Roman Historical Sources, Kenneth Atkinson Dec 2019

The Case For Hyrcanus Ii As The “Wicked Priest” And A Pirate: Evidence From Neglected Roman Historical Sources, Kenneth Atkinson

Faculty Publications

Scholars have long debated the identity of the mysterious person denounced in the Dead Sea Scrolls by the sobriquet the Wicked Priest (הכוהן הרשע). Since the discovery of the Scrolls, researchers have identified nearly twenty persons as the Wicked Priest. Some view this vast number of proposals as indicative of a faulty method for understanding the history of the community behind these texts. This is because such efforts assume the Wicked Priest was an actual person. Consequently, scholars seeking to uncover his identity use material from Josephus, Philo, Pliny, and other writers to interpret the references to him in the …

Benefit Sharing In The Arctic: A Systematic View, Andrey Petrov, Maria S. Tysiachniouk Sep 2019

Benefit Sharing In The Arctic: A Systematic View, Andrey Petrov, Maria S. Tysiachniouk

Faculty Work

Benefit sharing is a key concept for sustainable development in communities affected by the extractive industry. In the Arctic, where extractive activities have been growing, a comprehensive and systematic understanding of benefit sharing frameworks is especially critical. The goal of this paper is to develop a synthesis and advance the theory of benefit sharing frameworks in the Arctic. Based on previously published research, a review of literature, a desktop analysis of national legislation, as well as by capitalizing on the original case studies, this paper analyzes benefit sharing arrangements and develops the typology of benefit sharing regimes in the Arctic. …

Temporal And Spatial Dynamics Of Competitive Parapatry In Chewing Lice, David J. Hafner, Mark S. Hafner, Theresa A. Spradling, Jessica E. Light, James W. Demastes Jul 2019

Temporal And Spatial Dynamics Of Competitive Parapatry In Chewing Lice, David J. Hafner, Mark S. Hafner, Theresa A. Spradling, Jessica E. Light, James W. Demastes

Faculty Work

We synthesize observations from 1979 to 2016 of a contact zone involving two subspecies of pocket gophers (Thomomys bottae connectens and T. b. opulentus) and their respective chewing lice (Geomydoecus aurei and G. centralis) along the Rio Grande Valley in New Mexico, U.S.A., to test predictions about the dynamics of the zone. Historically, the natural flood cycle of the Rio Grande prevented contact between the two subspecies of pocket gophers. Flood control measures completed in the 1930s permitted contact, thus establishing the hybrid zone between the pocket gophers and the contact zone between their lice (without hybridization). Since that time, …

Editorial: Developing Creativity Through Stem Subjects Integrated With The Arts, Ksenia Zhbanova

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

This issue of the Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions is focused on creativity - one of the most highly-desirable 21st Century skills on personal and global levels. Time, pedagogical knowledge, and resource constraints limit the number of opportunities for teachers to develop creativity in students. In this editorial, creativity development steps and strategies are illuminated along with specific roles of STEM subjects and the arts in development of student creativity. The processes of creativity development used in STEM and the arts are compared to each other and to the non-subject-specific creative process model of Root-Bernstein and Root- …

The Effects Of Relative Wages And Border Enforcement On Illegal Immigration, Aaron Iehl Apr 2019

The Effects Of Relative Wages And Border Enforcement On Illegal Immigration, Aaron Iehl

Major Themes in Economics

The flow of illegal immigrants into the United States cannot be accurately measured because any successful illegal immigrations will not be detected. This paper uses an apprehensions function developed by Hanson and Spilimbergo (1999) to estimate a lower bound for illegal immigration. An OLS regression model is employed to examine the effect of relative wages and border enforcement on the number of apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border from 1999-2017. These results are compared with findings from Hanson and Spilimbergo (1999) who studied apprehensions from 1976-1995.

Host-Parasite Associations Of The Cratogeomys Fumosus Species Group And Their Chewing Lice, Geomydoecus, Alex Popinga, James W. Demastes, Theresa A. Spradling, David J. Hafner, Mark S. Hafner Mar 2019

Host-Parasite Associations Of The Cratogeomys Fumosus Species Group And Their Chewing Lice, Geomydoecus, Alex Popinga, James W. Demastes, Theresa A. Spradling, David J. Hafner, Mark S. Hafner

Faculty Work

Chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) and the pocket gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae) that they inhabit have shared an intimate historical association that has made them a textbook study for cophylogeny. Herein, we examine the chewing lice found on pocket gophers of the Cratogeomys fumosus species group using DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene to determine relationships among lice for comparison to published host phylogeny. Although matrix approaches indicate a correlation between host and parasite genetic distances, cophylogenetic reconstruction methods fail to detect a pattern of widespread cophylogeny. In conclusion, this study provides an exception to the …
