The Museum At The Iowa State Normal School (State College Of Iowa), Fred Cram Jan 1955

The Museum At The Iowa State Normal School (State College Of Iowa), Fred Cram

Library Documents & Reports (entire collection)

So far as a careful scanning of the catalogs of ISNS reveals, the first mention of a museum occurs in the 1896 issue, where on page 45 we find that “Natural Science has its museum well stocked with minerals, rocks, fossils dried and alcoholic specimens.”

While our Museum has usually been referred to as one of natural history, there has accumulated over the years a miscellaneous collection of other materials. There are items of historical value, such as swords, guns, and uniforms. There are old documents, coins, and curiosities. There are boats and other items from river and sea. Industrial …

French Zoology In The Twentieth Century, Louis Gallien Jan 1955

French Zoology In The Twentieth Century, Louis Gallien

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is a great privilege for me to be called upon to give this lecture at your meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science. I am most thankful for the invitation and cordial reception which you have tendered tome. I should like to present to you a short aperçu of the development of Zoology in France, during the first part of the present century. It seems to me that such a review must not only treat of the men, institutions and works which arose during this period in zoology, but should also, and more generally, show how the major events …

A Resource Unit On Foreign Trade, Wilbur R. Hebbeln Jan 1955

A Resource Unit On Foreign Trade, Wilbur R. Hebbeln

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This volume was written to provide a concise reference on foreign trade while, at the same time retaining the fundamental ideas. It is written primarily for persons who have previously covered this area but need to review the basic concepts before making interpretations of other information relating to the subject. Effort has been made to maintain a chronological sequence so not only the ideas but the way they were developed may be apparent. This thesis should provide one of the requisites of a good teacher, that of a command of the subject.

The Changing Status Of The Country Superintendent Of Schools In Iowa, Dwight Gene Bode

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The county superintendent has long been recognized as part of the of the educational organization in the United States. The mixed ancestry of the office of county superintendent has resulted in a position whose functions and responsibilities differ widely from state to state.

The forty-eight states may be grouped into three general categories with reference to the county as a school unit: states having no county school organization, county-unit states, and states in which the county is the intermediate agency. There are nine states having no county school superintendent. Six of the states having no county superintendent are organized in …

Additions To And Notes On The Flora Of Dickinson County, Iowa, Martin L. Grant

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Dickinson County, Iowa, is one of the northern counties bordering on Minnesota, the third one east from the northwestern corner of the state. Botanically, it is best known for its prairie flora and aquatic habitats. Since the "Dickinson County Flora" (Grant, 1951) was published, there has been opportunity to do further field work there during the summer of 1952, and to examine specimens in the herbaria of Iowa State College (here cited as ISC), the State University of Iowa (SUI), Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC), and the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory on Lake Okoboji in Dickinson Co. (ILL). The writer's specimens …

Seed Retention Of Some Prairie Plants, A. L. Bakke, E. P. Sylwester Jan 1953

Seed Retention Of Some Prairie Plants, A. L. Bakke, E. P. Sylwester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There are still a number of native prairie areas in Iowa. One of these outstanding tracts belongs to the Steel family of Cherokee, Iowa. It consists of about half a section located in Cedar Township in Cherokee county (N. 1/2 Sec. 16) one and a half miles northwest of the town of Larabee. The area has never been plowed: as a matter of fact, it has never been fenced. The flora of this area, like most of the other generally treeless areas of the state consist largely of perennial plants of a distinctly xerophytic type (1.3.4.5). The Graminae are the …

Profile Properties Of Some Loess-Derived Brunizem Soils Of Southeastern Iowa, R. Hunter, F. F. Riecken, J. E. Mcclelland

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Brown (1936, p 18) summarized the information up to 1936 on the geography and classification of the prairie loess-derived soils of southeastern Iowa. The Tama and Grundy were the major series recognized. Field studies since 1942 indicated there was a need to revise the concept of these series. The present paper presents some data on selected profiles formerly classed with these series.

Recent Status Of The Beaver In Iowa, Glen C. Sanderson Jan 1953

Recent Status Of The Beaver In Iowa, Glen C. Sanderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many years prior to the settlement of Iowa her streams had been scoured by Indian hunters and white trappers for fur, principally beaver. The hunters and trappers had taken the cream of the beaver before the earliest settlements were established; however, remnants of the population were still present as is attested to by the fact that Iowa geography has many names alluding to the beaver. Beaver could not stand both persecution and civilization, so they disappeared from Iowa sometime after the seventies and in 1872 the legislature placed them on the "continuous closed season" list. By the late twenties there …
