A Study Of Science Teacher Perceptions And The Implementation Of Science-Technology-Society Education In Iowa Senior High Schools, David L. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which Science-Technology Society (STS) education has been implemented into the science curriculum and if teachers perceptions and personal assessment of STS education in Iowa senior high schools vary with the teacher's STS background or educational degree. Consisting of 190 senior high school science teachers (grades 9-12) in forty-nine schools distributed throughout the state of Iowa, the sample was obtained by a systematic, stratified sampling of school districts by enrollment size and Area Education Agency districts. Teachers were asked to complete questionnaires designed to collect data concerning: STS background, level …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Kathleen J. Sunnes Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Kathleen J. Sunnes

Graduate Research Papers

As the 21st Century approaches, changes in social, political, and economic environments have been accelerating. There is a change of attitude about the educational system and its role in our society. It is my belief that our school systems will be the stable institutions which will maintain and teach the values our society will need to survive. Education has a powerful influence on our children. The responsibility of the principal of an educational institution is great.

Floristic Composition And Conservation Status Of Fens In Iowa, John A. Pearson, Mark J. Leoschke Jan 1992

Floristic Composition And Conservation Status Of Fens In Iowa, John A. Pearson, Mark J. Leoschke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Over 200 extant fens of varying condition were documented during an extensive inventory conducted in Iowa between 1986 and 1991. Approximately half of the extant fens support endangered, threatened, special concern, or other rare plant species. Approximately 25 fens are outstanding conservation prospects with intact vegetation, high species richness, and rare species. Nearly 40% of all potential fen sites have been destroyed by cultivation or damage; another 30% remain unknown due to lack of a field visit, but most appear on aerial photographs to be very small, disturbed fragments. In addition to their traditionally recognized range in northwest Iowa, fens …

Links With The Rural And Small Schools, James D. Jess

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Two-thirds of Iowa's 425 school districts enroll fewer than 750 students in grades kindergarten through 12. Nearly one-half enroll fewer than 500 students and 49, or 12%, enroll fewer than 250 students. Iowa's statistics on school districts closely mirror those of the United States where we find one-third of our nation's elementary and secondary age school children being educated in two-thirds of our nation's public school systems. The vast majority of these small school systems are located in rural areas that share the common demographics of small size, population sparsity and isolation. School statistics further indicate that small and rural …

Focus Area Three: Curriculum Issues, Robert N. Muffoletto Jan 1992

Focus Area Three: Curriculum Issues, Robert N. Muffoletto

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Debates on the curriculum of teacher education, both overt and covert, must situate questions of knowledge and practice within the broader social and historical landscape. Questions concerning power and benefit must be considered in relationship to social and bureaucratic institutional control. For example: Who in the end holds the power over the content and process of teacher education? How is this position maintained? What forms of resistance are found inside and outside of teacher education? Who benefits from the current state of affairs? To consider these and other questions concerning the nature of teaching and teacher education, the social, political, …

Geology Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii, R. G. Baker Jan 1992

Geology Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii, R. G. Baker

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Fens are peatlands which are dependent on groundwater discharge to provide nutrient enrichment. Fens are found in a variety of landscape positions and in most Iowa landform regions. This paper presents a classification system for Iowa fens based on landscape position, stratigraphy, and hydrologic factors. Iowa fens can be separated into six categories: 1) fens along valley wall slopes; the groundwater source for these fens is sand and gravel buried between glacial tills (inter-till); 2) fens in hummocky topography on the northwestern margin of the Des Moines Lobe landform region; the water source is sand and gravel buried within glacial …

The University Of Iowa Museum Of Natural History: An Historical Perspective, George D. Shrimper Jan 1992

The University Of Iowa Museum Of Natural History: An Historical Perspective, George D. Shrimper

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The 132-year record of UIMNH essentially mirrors historical and on-going trends in related institutions. As scholarship grew in the natural sciences during the 19th century, natural history museums became centers for scientific research. A "Golden Age" of museum-based expeditionary work and taxonomic research was marked at UI by the careers of curator/naturalists Calvin, Nutting, Macbride, and Shimek. Systematic biology and paleontology thrived with the accumulation of extensive collections. De-emphasis of "natural history" studies followed after 1920-30 with a concomitant growth in cellular and molecular biology. In seeking new directions and financial support, many museums, including UIMNH, shifted emphasis to public …

The Importance Of Teaching Problem Solving, Edward Dvorak Jan 1992

The Importance Of Teaching Problem Solving, Edward Dvorak

Graduate Research Papers

Each day mathematics teachers and their students go through the daily routine of solving basic textbook mathematical problems. The teacher discusses the basic concept that is being studied and then assigns a number of problems. The assignment is generally limited to performing algorithmic computations in a rote manner. Problem solving is limited or nonexistant.

Distance Education: The Re-Emergence Of The Telecourse, Sarah Hanuske Jan 1992

Distance Education: The Re-Emergence Of The Telecourse, Sarah Hanuske

Graduate Research Papers

The year 2000 is expected to have a fifty percent increase in total world population over 1970 (Clarke, 1974). Most of the growth is occurring in developing nations. Even though the rate of growth is less dramatic in developed countries, the social implications are just as important. The expanding numbers of school children, university and vocational-technical students, and others seeking additional training and education are straining the resources of existing traditional educational structures everywhere.

The Egypt-Palestine/Israel Boundary: 1841-1992, Thabit Abu-Rass Jan 1992

The Egypt-Palestine/Israel Boundary: 1841-1992, Thabit Abu-Rass

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In 1841, with the involvement of European powers, the Ottoman Empire distinguished by Firman territory subject to a Khedive of Egypt from that subject more directly to Istanbul. With British pressure in 1906, a more formal boundary was established between Egypt and Ottoman Palestine. This study focuses on these events and on the history from 1841 to the present. The study area includes the Sinai peninsula and extends from the Suez Canal in the west to what is today southern Israel from Ashqelon on the Mediterranean to the southern shore of the Dead Sea in the east. Both alterations in …

Aspects Of Air Pollution, And Its Effect On The Respiratory System, Jennifer Randall Jan 1992

Aspects Of Air Pollution, And Its Effect On The Respiratory System, Jennifer Randall

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

This report centers around one of today's most prominent environmental issues-- air pollution. First, the major pollutants are defined and explained. Chloroflourocarbons, ozone, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and suspended particulate matter all receive attention.

Next, air pollution's effect on the Earth is explained. The "greenhouse effect", global warming, acid rain, and ozone depletion all have an enormous impact on Earth's climate and atmosphere.

The report proceeds on to discuss options for controlling and so lving the air pollution problem. Se+ective catalytic reduction, noncatalytic reduction, tradeable permits-- these three processes are examples of large scale attempts …

A Comparison Of Cognitive Abilities Test Scores Of Second Graders From Four Different Preschool Backgrounds, Judy A. Conner Jan 1992

A Comparison Of Cognitive Abilities Test Scores Of Second Graders From Four Different Preschool Backgrounds, Judy A. Conner

Graduate Research Papers

This study focused around a research question involving middle and upper socioeconomic status children: Do public school second graders who previously attended Montessori preschools demonstrate higher cognitive abilities (as measured by the Cognitive Abilities Test) than second graders who attended traditional preschools or did not attend preschool? Although there was a wide variability of scores within each group, t-tests analyses revealed significant differences favoring preschool attenders when compared to those who did not attend preschool, and for Montessori preschoolers when compared to the other groups.

Natural History In Iowa: The Early Phases, David C. Glenn-Lewin, Thomas R. Rosburg Jan 1992

Natural History In Iowa: The Early Phases, David C. Glenn-Lewin, Thomas R. Rosburg

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Natural history in Iowa prior to the 20th Century can be conveniently arranged into 4 phases: Native American, before the Louisiana Purchase, between the Louisiana Purchase and about 1850, and after 1850. Native American natural history was extensive and had a distinctly spiritual character. Natural history was a component of European exploration up to the time of the Louisiana Purchase, but was not treated as a separate endeavor; the evidence from this period comes from the journals and diaries of early exploreres, fur traders and the like. Between the Louisiana Purchase and about 1850, natural history changed from its status …
