Addressing Diversity: A Case Study Of Teacher Educators' Views And Instructional Practices At A Midwestern University, Alina Slapac Jan 2006

Addressing Diversity: A Case Study Of Teacher Educators' Views And Instructional Practices At A Midwestern University, Alina Slapac

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It is well documented that while the student population is becoming more and more diverse, the teacher population remains mostly white, female, monolingual, and monocultural (Banks, 2001a; Darling-Hammond, 2002; Nieto, 2000a). Consequently, teacher education programs have the important role of addressing diversity throughout curriculum, field experiences and faculty recruitment.

The purpose of this qualitative research was to gain more understanding, from the teacher educators' perspectives, about the way diversity is being addressed at a Midwestern university by examining teacher educators' various methods of instruction, and their course materials, which focus on diversity issues and the needs of diverse learners. The …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this case study was to investigate students' participation in distance education and perceptions of their status as students and the learning achieved within the context of a radio and television university in the North of China. This study focused on the students who had completed a two-year college program and been promoted to a four-year bachelor's degree program. Data was collected and analyzed from observations, interviews and document reviews.

Results of the study identified many reasons for students' participation at the radio and television university to pursue their higher education. The primary reason for most was their …

Seeking A "Context" To Understand The Body: An Analysis Of "The Vagina Monologues" As A Counterpublic Sphere, Amber Davisson Jan 2006

Seeking A "Context" To Understand The Body: An Analysis Of "The Vagina Monologues" As A Counterpublic Sphere, Amber Davisson

Iowa Journal of Communication

"The Vagina Monologues," has impacted hundreds of audiences across the country and sparked an international movement. This article looks at the rhetorical conventions of the texts in order to understand its success and its relationship to the V-Day Movement. The main argument is that the play, in combination with the movement, has created what Fraser (1994) calls a counterpublic sphere; and, in doing so, has provoked a dialogue about the body that has been nurtured within the sphere of the movement and cross engaged the public sphere to give women a new language to "speak" the vagina.

The Honey Creek Member: A New Holocene Alluvial Stratigraphic Unit In The Midwest, Jeremy S. Dillon, Rolfe D. Mandel Jan 2006

The Honey Creek Member: A New Holocene Alluvial Stratigraphic Unit In The Midwest, Jeremy S. Dillon, Rolfe D. Mandel

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

This paper describes the type locality and type section for the Honey Creek Member, a stratigraphic unit first recognized in the Honey Creek drainage in southeastern Nebraska. The alluvial chronology for Honey Creek basin is similar to the regional chronology of streams in the Midwest, and all of the formal members of the DeForest Formation occur in the basin. However, the lithology of one unit, the Honey Creek Member, does not correlate with any of the formally recognized members of the DeForest Formation. The Honey Creek Member is composed of grayish brown silt loam overbank facies coarsening downward to a …

Learning To Live And Living To Learn: An Exploration Of Human Relations In The Classroom, Stephanie Lynn Orth Jan 2006

Learning To Live And Living To Learn: An Exploration Of Human Relations In The Classroom, Stephanie Lynn Orth

Honors Program Theses

Teaching human relations in schools is the only way to insure egocentrism is left for altruism. That is, to insure that people start to think of others instead of only themselves (Lane, 109). Many people have lost any obligation to serve anyone beyond themselves (Damon, 38). Students feel less responsible for their actions today, than in the past. Teaching students a sense of altruism is the only way to ensure that both new and current world knowledge of facts, concepts, and inventions are used to relieve suffering, as President Truman described, and not to cause it (Lane, 89).

Therefore, human …

Stages Of Change, Process Of Change, Self-Efficacy, Decisional Balance, And Behavior Intention For Exercise Behavior By Young Adults, Danielle Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to assess stage transitions, processes of change, self-efficacy, decisional balance, and behavioral intention measures of exercise among college students enrolled in a conceptual-based university wellness class. A sub-problem of the study was to utilize the Transtheoretical Model as a basis for comparing two approaches of sequencing course content. Results are based on responses to a questionnaire completed by 164 students enrolled in the Personal Wellness course ( 440:010 sections 02 and 06) and the Human Identity and Relationships course (310:053 sections 02 and 05) during the Spring 2002 semester. The 46-item, self-report questionnaire was …

Bible Beater/Bra Burner: Liminal Experiences Of Christian & Feminist Identity, Jennifer Lynn Freitag

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Bible Beater/Bra Burner: Liminal Experiences of Christian & Feminist identity explores the relationship between Christian and feminist identity. Through ethnography and ethnodrama, this project examines the ways fifteen women in eastern Iowa negotiate the relationship between Christianity and feminism in their daily lives, the ways language functions for and against these performances of self, and the ways staged performance can be used to approach these specific issues of women's identity. The ethnodrama written from interview and autoethnographic data, Bible Beater/Bra Burner, was performed in the University of Northern Iowa Interpreters Theatre on April 20-22, 2006. Bible Beater/Bra Burner employs creative …

"None Of The Weakness Of Her Sex": Uncovering A Lost Chapter In Women's Studies, Kenneth Atkinson Sep 2005

"None Of The Weakness Of Her Sex": Uncovering A Lost Chapter In Women's Studies, Kenneth Atkinson

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

From 76-67 BCE a remarkable woman governed ancient Israel as its sole ruler - Queen Salome Alexandra. After the death of her husband, King Alexander Jannaeus, the country was on the verge of civil war. Jannaeus had ruthlessly persecuted his religious enemies. Salome Alexandra assumed power, competently reformed the government, and inaugurated fiscal and political policies that led to what was likely the most prosperous and peaceful period in ancient Israel's history. By examining the life and times of Salome Alexandra, this study will hopefully bring to light the achievements of this amazing woman that have been neglected by scholars …

A Review By Weld Of Humboldt’S Cosmos, By Gerard Helferich, Jeff Weld Sep 2005

A Review By Weld Of Humboldt’S Cosmos, By Gerard Helferich, Jeff Weld

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The 1799 "discovery" of South America is credited to Alexander von Humboldt, an eclectically educated, ambitious, and antsy Prussian geologist-turned-adventurer whose exhaustive geological, meteorological, archeological, and anthropological surveys conducted over a five year sojourn through what are now Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, and Cuba, defined this place of great mystery ostensibly by order of King Charles IV of Spain. The voyage that planted Humboldt on the South American coast represented a seed, in hindsight, for the expansion of the Spanish empire into the southern hemisphere of the new world. It was one in a long succession of competitive charges …
