Content analysis was performed on thirty-three books. A worksheet was devised which contained the four main categories main character, function or role, physical appearance, and personality descriptors. Sub-categories for each main category were also provided on the worksheet. Frequency of occurrence for each category or sub-category was then recorded on the worksheet. After the analysis was …

The questions investigated were: (1) what are the identifiable physical, social and personality stereotypes attributed to Asian Americans, (2) how have characterizations of Asian Americans changed between the periods 1945-1965 and 1966-1976, and (3) how have Asian American authors and illustrators characterized Asian Americans as compared with non-Asian American authors and illustrators. The time periods were chosen to test the impact of the Civil Rights Movement and the growing consciousness of the importance of ethnicity.

William Dean Howells: Realist With A Purpose, Mary O'Brien Apple Jan 1977

William Dean Howells: Realist With A Purpose, Mary O'Brien Apple

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

William Dean Howells {1837-1920), the designer, defender, and promoter of American Realistic literature, developed his theory of realism from his experiences with literature and life. When Howells was a young man, his view of life was fashioned from his reading of romantic literature. As he matured, he became convinced that literature which idealized life left its readers with illusions about life which distorted their perceptions of life and themselves. He came to believe that the function of literature must be societal in nature and must serve the moral and social purpose of providing its readers with an insight into their …

Chaim Perelman's View Of Rhetorical Act, Ray D. Dearin

Iowa Journal of Communication

The concept of the "rhetorical act" has been used by contemporary theorists and critics to generate new insights into rhetoric. This paper considers how Chaim Perelman's "new rhetoric" employs the concept of act to illuminate speaker-speech-audience relationships, and, in turn, how Perelman's theory is clarified by reference to this paradigm.

By practical definition, an extemp speech consists of three points of analysis encompassed by an introduction and conclusion. There are several requisites that are necessary before a speech is considered an individual events extemporaneous speech. In their book, Coaching and Directing Forensics, Kloff and Lahman give the first requisite of an extemporaneous speech, that it must be a speech prepared in advance but neither written out nor …

Creative Dramatics: A Philosophy And A Method, Chris Furman Jan 1977

Creative Dramatics: A Philosophy And A Method, Chris Furman

Iowa Journal of Communication

Life today tends to smother this love of activity and initiative that children have. Television programs require little thinking, elaborate toys offer no chance for ingenuity, and elementary schools offer few chances for the child to participate in activities that challenge his deepest interest and highest powers.

Melodrama In The Secondary Schools, Louis Becker Jan 1977

Melodrama In The Secondary Schools, Louis Becker

Iowa Journal of Communication

Unfortunately an all too common situation will be repeated this fall in our schools, a situation which has been the bane of many a beginning English teacher in the past. When the time comes to designate extra duties and assignments, the principal has only to look to his first-year English teacher to find the director of the SCHOOL PLAYS! Limited perhaps more by a lack of training and background than imagination and talent, the teacher frantically searches for that "cheap, easy play" as a first go. And so we see the teacher - soon-to-become-director poised at the brink of plunging …

Iowa High School Principals’ Perceptions Of The Effect Of Collective Bargaining On Selected Teacher Behaviors, Dennis L. Webner Jan 1977

Iowa High School Principals’ Perceptions Of The Effect Of Collective Bargaining On Selected Teacher Behaviors, Dennis L. Webner

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if Iowa high school principals, in the early months of the 1976-1977 contract implementation and after the negotiations of the preceding year, believed that the collective bargaining process or results affected teacher behavior. The responses of 73 randomly selected principals in Iowa indicated that, in fact, they believed collective bargaining had affected the behavior of teachers in at least nine areas. Although individual differences existed, the following behaviors, affected in the indicated manner, were generally regarded as having a positive influence on the operation of the school: 1. Aids in planning …

The Effects Of Two-Channel Communication And Style On Receivers’ Perceptions Of Source Credibility And Verbal Content Of A Speech, Kenneth M. Johnson Jan 1977

The Effects Of Two-Channel Communication And Style On Receivers’ Perceptions Of Source Credibility And Verbal Content Of A Speech, Kenneth M. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Communication researchers have studied the effects of two-channel communication on perceptions of a source's affective state and a source's personality. These studies have produced inconsistent results. This study investigated the effects of two-channel communication and style on perceptions of a source's credibility and verbal content of a speech. Five hypotheses were tested. (1) A speaker using a dynamic style of delivery would be perceived as a more dynamic source than when using a conversational style. (2) A speaker using a dynamic style of delivery would be perceived as a more competent source than when using a conversational style. (3) A …

Look To The Forms: An Analysis Of Norman Mailer’S Non-Fiction, Roger Hancock Jan 1977

Look To The Forms: An Analysis Of Norman Mailer’S Non-Fiction, Roger Hancock

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"Look to the Forms" examines and establishes the common themes of four of Norman Mailer's non-fiction books: Advertisements for Myself, The Presidential Papers, Cannibals and Christians and The Armies of the Night. In these books Mailer writes of phenomena following World War II and evolves a system of metaphysics, philosophy and sociology which is existential. The whole system rests on an existential metaphysics which finally requires an existential view of life, society and art. The heart of Mailer's metaphysics is an existential God who may succeed in establishing his Vision over the universe. This God cannot act on his own; …

An Innovative Instructional Unit On Manufacturing Concepts And Terminology For Junior High Industrial Arts, James K. Martin Jan 1977

An Innovative Instructional Unit On Manufacturing Concepts And Terminology For Junior High Industrial Arts, James K. Martin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Although educators recognize the need for educational experiences that provide students with a basic understanding of the industrial technologies, too often students are not receiving the "hands-on" experiences related to industry. Numerous curriculum programs have been developed to provide the teacher with the necessary instructional materials and also provide students with educational-occupational guidance for the world of work. Yet, many of these programs are not being utilized by industrial arts educators.

Research has shown that most manufacturing curricula range from one to two semesters in length. In order for the teacher to wholly adopt one of these programs, considerable organizational …

The Use, Function And Importance Of Kilgore Trout In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Junior, Rodney Drake Jan 1977

The Use, Function And Importance Of Kilgore Trout In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Junior, Rodney Drake

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An essential trademark of Kurt Vonnegut's fiction is the constant cross-over of characters and settings. Both reappear again and again in the mythical universe Vonnegut has created. But it is Kilgore Trout that emerges as the most important and functional cross-over character that Vonnegut utilizes. He has attained this status because of his demonstrated significance in the three novels he appears in. First, as a supporting character in the novels God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater and Slaughterhouse-Five Trout becomes the central figure in Breakfast of Champions. He also is used as the key linking agent between the characters, plots and …
