The Influence Of The Level Of Instruction And The Sex Of The Teacher On The Criticism Of Classroom Speeches, Judy C. Pearson Jan 1980

The Influence Of The Level Of Instruction And The Sex Of The Teacher On The Criticism Of Classroom Speeches, Judy C. Pearson

Iowa Journal of Communication

The criticism of classroom speeches is central to the effective teaching of speech. Communication educators recognize the importance of criticism in pedagogy, and communication research evidences the key role played by criticism. However, investigations of classroom speech criticism have generally focused on college level courses and have considered college students as subjects. Findings on the college level may or may not be transferable to the high school or elementary school classroom. In order to extend our knowledge, this investigation sought to determine differences in the critiquing behavior of high school and college-level teachers.

A Burkian Motive Analysis Of Apologia: A Critical Analysis Of Clarence Darrow In His Own Defense, Steven L. Vibbert Jan 1980

A Burkian Motive Analysis Of Apologia: A Critical Analysis Of Clarence Darrow In His Own Defense, Steven L. Vibbert

Iowa Journal of Communication

I have committed one crime. I have stood for the weak and the poor. I have stood for the men who toiled.

Such was Clarence Darrow's contention before a Los Angeles jury on August 15, 1912. Darrow, perhaps the most renowned counsel of his day, stood at both a personal and professional crossroads. One path led to vindication. The other led to personal and professional ignominy. Accused of bribery, his character questioned, his career hanging in the balance, Darrow sought to steer the jury down the road which would exonerate him and renew his mission. Darrow's self-defense before that Los …

An Alternative Explanation Of Women's Speech, Michael G. Parkinson, Diane Atkinson Gorcyca

Iowa Journal of Communication

Frontier Theatre: A Torchbearer Of Civilization, Robert A. Schanke Jan 1980

Frontier Theatre: A Torchbearer Of Civilization, Robert A. Schanke

Iowa Journal of Communication

A blue, crystal-clear stream of cool, rushing water edged with fields of unspoiled green grass. In the distance, gently rolling hills were dotted by groves of majestic, fully grown trees. Such was the romantic fresco painted on a ceiling of the steamboat Omaha as it made its maiden voyage up the Missouri River in March, 1856. The caption at the bottom read, "The Promised Land.” For nearly fifty years after the signing of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the Kansas-Nebraska Territory had been considered a great desert and comparable to the vast wastelands of Africa. By 1854, however, this image …

The Effects Of Matched Versus Unmatched Counselor/Client And Advisor/Advisee Relationships, Evelyn J. Richardson Jan 1980

The Effects Of Matched Versus Unmatched Counselor/Client And Advisor/Advisee Relationships, Evelyn J. Richardson

Graduate Research Papers

For many years now, the area of counseling has been discovering, rediscovering or defining new techniques to increase counselor effectiveness. Attempts have also been made to improve the current conditions of the counselor-counselee relationships. Among these improvements has been the suggestion for matched, by subculture, relationships. The issue has not been to destroy all unmatched relationships, but to argue that if counselors must counsel clients of different cultures at a minimum, training in that particular culture should be considered.

Primary and secondary resources were obtained through 1) personal interviews with past and present employees, and administrative personnel associated with the library, 2) past records at the Reformatory and at the Iowa State Library, 3) periodicals newspapers, and annual reports …

Considerations For A Junior High Debate Program, Sandy Wilson Jan 1980

Considerations For A Junior High Debate Program, Sandy Wilson

Iowa Journal of Communication

The purpose of this paper is to provide an informal discussion of the extracurricular debate program for eighth and ninth graders at Central Junior High in Iowa City. Currently, no debate elective is offered at Central, and the entire program is limited to after school and weekends. One primary goal would be for an elective to be offered based on the strengths of the extracurricular program. Most certainly, this paper is not intended as any kind of model plan for a coach to follow. Indeed, one of the strengths of debate throughout the state is the wide variety of different …

Self Concept And Its Relationship To Reading, Phyllis J. Demro Jan 1980

Self Concept And Its Relationship To Reading, Phyllis J. Demro

Graduate Research Papers

Self concept is a unique set of perceptions, ideas, and attitudes which mold the individual. It refers directly to the image each individual has about himself. Aspects of self concept include self, self in relation to others, self as achieving, self in school, and physical self. Self concept must be placed in its proper perspective of importance, regardless of the aspect being considered. One of the primary purposes of the teacher is to determine the nature and scope of the child's self concept and provide the necessary experiences to make that concept as useful to the student as possible. Self …

A Study To Determine Role Conflict In The Counselor-Coach, Thomas James Keller Jan 1980

A Study To Determine Role Conflict In The Counselor-Coach, Thomas James Keller

Graduate Research Papers

A social role is defined as a pattern of expected behaviors common to everyone who holds a specific position in society; a policeman, mother, teacher, counselor, or coach (Locke and Massengale, 1978, p. 162). Hollingshead (1965), using basically the same definition, says that an occupational role is a specific activity, with a market value, which an individual can continually pursue, that supplies a steady flow of income, displays a technology of specific manual and mental operations, and produces a prestige attached to the occupation in accordance with the values of the community (p. 15). Under these two viewpoints, both counseling …

Consequences Of Conquest Upon Roman Political, Social, Economic, Cultural And Architectural Development During And After The Punic Wars, 2nd Century B.C., Deborah Carol Blinka

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Roman conquest of the eastern Mediterranean (264-100 B.C.) was one of the more important events in Roman history. The expansion of Carthage had been brought to a halt when the genius of the Roman general Scipio enabled the Romans to defeat the Carthaginians decisively on their own ground, at Zama in North Africa. With Carthage subdued, Rome set out systematically forestalling the rise of any potentially dangerous rival in Greece or the Near East. Rome gradually filled the power vacuum left by the disintegrating Hellenistic states and for the first time in history, the whole Mediterranean area was to …

Identification Of Teacher Concerns Toward Remediation Of Dialect-Related Reading Difficulties And Instructional Techniques Employed, Yvette C. Lewis Jan 1980

Identification Of Teacher Concerns Toward Remediation Of Dialect-Related Reading Difficulties And Instructional Techniques Employed, Yvette C. Lewis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The issue of reading failure among Black children, particularly those of urban areas, has been a consistent concern among educators and parents. Reasons as to why these children do not, as a group, achieve comparably with national norms relate heavily to the style of oral language they employ. Explanations given by experts in the areas of education and linguistics are derived from two models of reading behavior postulated by Weiner and Cromer (1967), the deficit model of reading failure among Black children which attributes their difficulty to the absence of adequate Standard English language skills, and the difference model, which …

A Comparison Of Formal Operational Thinking Ability With Reading Ability And Critical Thinking Ability For Tenth Grade Students, Theresa Jill Cecil Jan 1980

A Comparison Of Formal Operational Thinking Ability With Reading Ability And Critical Thinking Ability For Tenth Grade Students, Theresa Jill Cecil

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In recent years there has been a good deal of interest in Piaget's cognitive developmental theory as it relates to beginning reading and learning to read and a number of research studies have investigated the effect of cognitive stage on reading ability. Little research has been done, however, which investigate the relationships and effect of advanced levels of cognitive development upon the reading ability of adolescents and adults. The final stage of cognitive development is termed formal operational thinking in Piagetian theory and involves the ability to formulate hypotheses, reason logically and function in the abstract realm of possibility as …

How To Stop Killing Ourselves (Without Also Killing Debate), David Kanellis Jan 1980

How To Stop Killing Ourselves (Without Also Killing Debate), David Kanellis

Iowa Journal of Communication

So ended another typical high school debate tournament in Iowa in 1979. I was there and cannot help thinking there ought to be a better way to conduct a debate tournament. It should be possible to have all debaters on their way home from a tournament by 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, roughly 24 hours after the tournament begins. Furthermore, there should be a larger variety of judges available for the semifinal and final rounds. Ideally it should be possible for a high school debate coach to be on the panel in each of these apparently important rounds.

Philosophical Perspectives On Human Communication, Carrol C. Arnold Jan 1980

Philosophical Perspectives On Human Communication, Carrol C. Arnold

Iowa Journal of Communication

Anyone who makes assertions about the nature and significance of human communication will wittingly or unwittingly make commitments to fundamental assumptions about what it is to be a human being. If we do not pay attention to what these assumptions and commitments are, we are apt to wander into fantasy or self-contradiction or both. Dr. Hugh Blair, the Scottish man of letters, is a handy example. In the eighteenth century Blair promulgated the already popular theory that "taste" is a primary feature of all discourse. Whatever is said will reflect good, poor, or indifferent "taste." "Good taste" is the product …

Iowa Journal of Communication

Do high communication apprehensive students prefer interpersonal communication courses or public speaking courses at the basic course level? Do high communication apprehensive students perceive interpersonal communication courses or public speaking courses as more threatening? The problem of communication apprehension has received considerable attention in the literature. Recent studies have considered the causes of communication apprehension; the correlates of communication apprehension; the effects of communication apprehension on small group interaction; the effects of communication apprehension in later adult life with regard to housing and employment;4 and the manner in which high communication apprehensives are perceived by others. Very little attention, …

Vocational Home Economics Students’ Perceptions Of Learning Styles And Pre-Student Teaching Field Experiences, Karensue Foley Jan 1980

Vocational Home Economics Students’ Perceptions Of Learning Styles And Pre-Student Teaching Field Experiences, Karensue Foley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The main purpose was to determine if vocational home economics students' attitudes toward inductive versus didactic learning affect their perception on selected variables concerning the pre-student teaching field experiences. To complete this main purpose it was necessary to determine vocational home economics students' attitudes toward inductive versus didactic learning. The main subjects were 58 vocational home economics majors, as of Fall, 1979, at the University of Northern Iowa. They included sophomores, juniors, and seniors. All students were females. The majors must have been taking, or had taken, one or both of the field experiences in the Common Professional Sequence, a …
