The Effect Of Peer Counseling On The Frequency Of Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, D'Arcy Ann Heine Jan 1981

The Effect Of Peer Counseling On The Frequency Of Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, D'Arcy Ann Heine

Graduate Research Papers

Alcoholism is a major health problem in the United States. There are an estimated ten million people stricken with the illness, a 100 percent increase over the estimated five million alcoholics in 1958. Even more startling is the fact that alcoholism among this country's adolescents has risen an alarming 300 percent in the last decade. Over one fourth of the adolescents who drink are no longer classified as social drinkers, but are early, middle or late stage alcoholics. Eighty-three percent of the high school students drink alcohol, in varying amounts, with varying frequency. An estimated 25 percent abuse alcohol. By …

Multi-Image: Summary And Critical Review Of The Research, Timothy M. Ritchhart

Graduate Research Papers

Multi-Image is a relatively new form of communication, carrying information to the receivers in both the audio and pictorial channels. Whether viewed as a new medium, art form, technology, or presentation technique, multi-image has established itself as a very effective communications device. Through developments in program designs and equipment sophistication, multi-image has become one of the favorite methods used by business and industry for promoting themselves and their products. Because of its successful use and technological advances, multi-image is now no longer looked down upon as avant-garde, but as a professional approach to communication.

Application Of Piaget’S Theory Of Cognitive Growth To The Development Of An Interview Protocol And Validation Of A Task To Assess Reasoning Abilities Of College Students, Bruce Edward Perry Jan 1981

Application Of Piaget’S Theory Of Cognitive Growth To The Development Of An Interview Protocol And Validation Of A Task To Assess Reasoning Abilities Of College Students, Bruce Edward Perry

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The developmental theory of Jean Piaget provides a paradigm for evaluation of the reasoning abilities of an individual. The overall aim of Piaget's work was to delineate the sequence of the development of intelligence, particularly the ability of a subject to interact successfully with complex problems or to deal with simple problems in more efficient ways. To this end, this study investigated the validation of a new interview task as an instrument for assessing the formal reasoning abilities of college students. The new task, patterned after a game called MasterMind, requires the subject to deduce the color and location of …

A Study To Determine If Individuals’ Public Theoretical Statements Are Consistent With Their Later Related Public Statements, David Lewis Boman Jan 1981

A Study To Determine If Individuals’ Public Theoretical Statements Are Consistent With Their Later Related Public Statements, David Lewis Boman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis reports on a study designed to determine if public figures are consistent between their public theoretical statements and later related public statements. Judging philosophies and ballots written by academic debate judges, one subset of public figures, are used to measure the consistency of public figures. A review of consistency theory research using commitment as a variable supports the assumption that public figures will be consistent. Public commitments have two effects. First, making a public commitment increases the expectancy of others that the public figure will be consistent. Second, making a public commitment increases the resistance to change on …

A Study Of Industrial Arts Teachers' Opinions Of Gifted And Talented Students In Black Hawk County, Iowa, James Robert Wrona Jan 1981

A Study Of Industrial Arts Teachers' Opinions Of Gifted And Talented Students In Black Hawk County, Iowa, James Robert Wrona

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

While the handicapped and disadvantaged have enjoyed the benefit of some unique industrial arts educational programming, relatively little has been done to provide for the special educational needs of gifted and talented students. This may be partially a result of little research completed associating the gifted and talented student with industrial arts. Additionally, legislative support for gifted and talented students has been lacking. It was not until 1978, with the passage of Public Law 95-561, that programs for gifted and talented students have been granted some funding on the federal level. Although this public law can authorize up to $35 …

Rules Theory And Design: A Perspective On The Analysis And Evaluation Of Organizational Communication, Joel Craig Guenther Jan 1981

Rules Theory And Design: A Perspective On The Analysis And Evaluation Of Organizational Communication, Joel Craig Guenther

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A rules-based paradigm of communication has received increased interest from communication researchers. A rules-based model of organizational communication was only recently introduced and, therefore, suffered from a lack of empirical bases. This study reviews the theoretical bases of a rules approach to organizational communication, reviews a model of organizational communication, and tests that model in a case study of a department within a midwestern university. Furthermore, this study extends the concept of archetypes, an abstract level of meaning in a hierarchically structured model of meaning and action.

Three research questions are analyzed: (1) What is the degree of consensus between …

A Survey Of Science Instruction In Elementary Learning Disability Resource Rooms In Iowa Area Education Agency # 1, Kevin M. Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the initiation of special resource rooms for learning disabled youngsters several years ago, many special educators have concentrated their instructional routine on the skills of reading and mathematics. A subject area such as science has been viewed as a topic suited more for the regular classroom than the resource room. When science has been moved into the resource room, research shows it has generally been on a tutorial basis, helping the child catch up to other students. This study investigated the amount and quality of science instruction present in elementary learning disability resource rooms. It involved the 53 public …

Communication Behavior In Conflict, Dan Destephen Jan 1981

Communication Behavior In Conflict, Dan Destephen

Iowa Journal of Communication

Communication scholars are increasingly viewing communicative behavior within interactions as functioning to indicate the structure of the interaction. This focus suggests that participants' behavior within an interaction is the best descriptor of the interaction. Consistent with this focus is the emphasis on developing category systems for the description of communication behavior within particular types of situations. Such systems gain their validity from their relationship with existing theory and their ability to accurately describe communicative behavior. This paper will attempt to describe a category system for the analysis of communicative behavior in conflict situations.

Ronald Reagan's Rhetorical Reality, Ray D. Dearin Jan 1981

Ronald Reagan's Rhetorical Reality, Ray D. Dearin

Iowa Journal of Communication

Returning to Iowa--certainly not oblivion—I carried back distinct impressions of the rhetoric of the Republican convention, some of which I hope to crystallize into a statement that may be of help to students of political rhetoric generally, and to those in particular who seek to understand the rhetorical power of Ronald Reagan. I do not expect to plow any new theoretical ground in this brief article; however, I propose to employ Ernest G. Bormann's "fantasy theme analysis" as a useful paradigm for interpreting Reagan's acceptance speech. My thesis is that this address can be profitably understood as a manifestation of …

Achievement, Productivity, And Participation As A Function Of Task Feedback Among Kindergarten Students, Catherine M. Hill Jan 1981

Achievement, Productivity, And Participation As A Function Of Task Feedback Among Kindergarten Students, Catherine M. Hill

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There has been little research which specifically explores the effects of visually charted feedback techniques with kindergarten aged students working independently in a classroom setting. Consequently, the role of feedback, an externally observable event, is not well understood. Using a learning centers approach in which kindergartners worked daily at an independent task, the present study investigated the relationship between two feedback conditions (a) teacher-charting of student progress and (b) student self-charting of progress and the measures of student achievement, productivity, and participation. Subjects were twenty white, middle-class students who were enrolled in a kindergarten in a mid-western school district. A …

A Comparison Of The Objectives Of Parents And Teachers For The Preschool Program, Marcia Davis Akin Jan 1981

A Comparison Of The Objectives Of Parents And Teachers For The Preschool Program, Marcia Davis Akin

Graduate Research Papers

During the last decade the number of children attending preschool has increased dramatically. In 1967, 6.8% of three year olds and 21.3% of four year olds were enrolled in school as compared to 20% of three year olds and 41.9% of four year olds in 1976 (Bureau of Census, 1). Several factors have contributed to this growth. There is an increasingly popular attitude among parents of preschoolers that learning experiences provided by families can be beneficially supplemented by an organized preschool experience. This is somewhat an outgrowth of our increasingly achievement-oriented society. Parents hope to give their children a good …

Implications Of Intervention Studies In The Training Of Piagetian Conservation Tasks, Karen S. Jensen Jan 1981

Implications Of Intervention Studies In The Training Of Piagetian Conservation Tasks, Karen S. Jensen

Graduate Research Papers

Jean Piaget, in his studies of the cognitive development of children, did not address the applications of his theory to reading instruction. Recent research strongly indicates that Piaget's theory applies to education, and especially reading instruction. Reoccuring questions arise from the research: Must children pass through particular stages in which specific skills and operations are acquired before reading is possible and, Is it possible that beginning reading instruction, which now starts earlier in most schools (Robinson, Strickland, & Cullinan, 1977), may be premature for children who have not attained prerequisite cognitive skill levels? The literature review will answer these and …

A Survey Of The Frequency Of Film Utilization Techniques Employed By Teachers In East Central Iowa, Jo Ellen Johnson Jan 1981

A Survey Of The Frequency Of Film Utilization Techniques Employed By Teachers In East Central Iowa, Jo Ellen Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this survey was to determine the extent to which teachers apply effective fi]m utilization techniques in schools. Five general questions and sixteen more specific ones were developed based on effective usage techniques identified in the literature review. Questionnaires were sent to five hundred kindergarten through twelfth grade teachers selected at random from public and private schools in East central Iowa. Responses were received from 67% of the sample. The initial analysis suggested that up to 90% of the teachers reported applying familiar techniques such as introducing and discussing films, but the percentages of teachers who indicated positive …

The Need For Interpersonal Communication And Organizational Communication In The Preparatory Course Work Of School Administrators, Deborah Smith Lehman Jan 1981

The Need For Interpersonal Communication And Organizational Communication In The Preparatory Course Work Of School Administrators, Deborah Smith Lehman

Graduate Research Papers

Crucial problems of school finance, declining enrollments, governmental restrictions, and special interest groups are facing today's school administrators. These problems areas, which seem to focus on the cognitive domain, have been specifically highlighted in many of the administrative preparatory programs, As a result, much less attention has been given to the contribution made by the social sciences in regard to administrative effectiveness. This contribution comes most notably in the areas of both interpersonal and organizational communication. The possibilities of improving the administrative preparatory program by incorporating interpersonal and organizational communication content deserves consideration,

The Staffing: A Naturalistic Study Of The Educational Placement Process, Susan Laurene Law Jan 1981

The Staffing: A Naturalistic Study Of The Educational Placement Process, Susan Laurene Law

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The intent of this study was to do a naturalistic observation of a series of staffings in order to generate a descriptive basis for theoretical notions or working hypotheses concerning the procedures, functioning and social relationships within the process. Relevant categories that emerged from the data were: labelling, test validity and reliability, laws and regulations, encouraging a decision, space, and parental participation. The study suggests that there are differences between the formally prescribed procedures and functions of a staffing and the actual behaviours of professionals and parents involved with the process. The variety of necessary coping strategies used by professionals …

The Correlation Of Ses And Children’S Performance On The Wisc-R And R-Cpm, Anne Carolyn Robb

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated the relationship between the WISC-R and the R-CPM for a sample of 44 fourth grade males classified according to SES. The questions asked were: 1) Does the R-CPM correlate most highly with the Block Design and Object Assembly subtests of the WISC-R; and, 2) what, if any, effect has SES on children's performance on these two instruments? Results indicate a moderate (.52) correlation between the R-CPM and the Performance Scale of the WISC-R. Within that scale, the R-CPM correlated most highly with the Picture Completion, Block Design and Object Assembly subtests. A moderate correlation (.56) was also …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Bilalian Children's Error Pattern On The Ppvt-R, Carole Redfield Coffey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to analyze the errors made by four year old Bilalian (Black) children to the stimuli which comprise the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - Revised (PPVT-R) in order to generate possible explanations for the.children's preferred ("incorrect") responses in terms of language patterns and reasoning processes. Standardized administration procedures were disregarded; testing with each of the 21 children began with Plate 10 and proceeded until six "misses" occurred within eight consecutive responses. Each error, along with the test publishers' stipulated ("correct") response and a distractor, was queried in an attempt to ascertain the reason for the …

Attitudes Of Non-Disabled College Students Toward Other Successful College Students With Histories Of Psychiatric Hospitalization Through The Attribution Of Locus Of Control, Robert Herman Stensrud Jan 1981

Attitudes Of Non-Disabled College Students Toward Other Successful College Students With Histories Of Psychiatric Hospitalization Through The Attribution Of Locus Of Control, Robert Herman Stensrud

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine how nondisabled college students would perceive disabled college students who were depicted as being successful. Undergraduate students at the University of Northern Iowa were studied to determine the attitudes they maintained toward a hypothetical individual. One-half of the 253 subjects received a story about an individual who had been a patient at the State Mental Health Institute, Independence, Iowa. The other one-half of the subjects received a story about an individual who had never been hospitalized for psychiatric treatment. Aside from this aspect, both stories were identical. Subjects evaluated both hypothetical individuals …
