Speech Communication And Theatre Education: A Report Of Current Concerns And Practices, Douglas M. Trank, Carol A. Cortez Jan 1986

Speech Communication And Theatre Education: A Report Of Current Concerns And Practices, Douglas M. Trank, Carol A. Cortez

Iowa Journal of Communication

Our public elementary and secondary educational institutions have received considerable public attention in the past few years. Various local, state, and national commissions have presented us with dozens of reports critical of the current state of educational practice. It is only logical to assume that the institutions which prepare teachers for our public schools share the responsibility for the problems found in our educational systems and take appropriate action for reform in teacher education and certification procedures. Several recent reports have seriously questioned the quality of these teacher education programs. A report from the National Commission for Excellence in Teacher …

On Grounds Of Conscience: The Failed Rhetoric Of Frank Cordaro, W. Thomas Duncanson

Iowa Journal of Communication

In 1976, Des Moines native Frank Cordaro graduated from the Aquinas Institute of Theology (then located in Dubuque), refused ordination in the Roman Catholic Church, and moved to Des Moines to found a Catholic Worker community of hospitality. From 1976 to 1982 when he left the Des Moines Catholic Worker house, Cordaro was the preeminent radical in Iowa. What follows is a study of Frank Cordaro as a rhetorical failure during the period in which he founded and guided the Des Moines Catholic Worker community.

It has been an infrequent practice in rhetorical studies to write about people who have …

Comment By Cryss Farley, Cryss Farley

Iowa Journal of Communication

The Iowa High School Speech Association, in attempting to uphold "good taste," has set itself up as a censorship panel by implementing rules concerning the depiction of tobacco smoking, drinking, and the use of profanity or ''publicly offensive'' themes.in dramatic contests, and that disqualify "controversial and objectionable material" in book review, speech, and debate contests. It has been almost two centuries since the states declared that ''Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech,'' yet we still face situations where well-meaning, but misguided, censors. attempt to ban materials because someone may not like the language contained therein, …

Comment By H. L. Ewbank, H. L. Ewbank

Iowa Journal of Communication

"[l]f men are to be governed," wrote educator Alexander Meiklejohn in his 1960 volume entitled Political Freedom, "then that governing must be done, not by others, but by themselves." This direct affirmation of the principle of self-rule has been at the core of every theory of democracy set forth to date. Corollary to that position is the obvious need for experience-guided experience provided by our system of public education-in making life-affecting decisions, so that citizens will develop a conscious system of values and principles to guide them in making the choices required of citizens of a democracy.

The recent action …

Devonian Ammonoid Manticoceras From Iowa, Cathy Baker, Brian F. Glenister, Calvin O. Levorson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recovery of rare, well-preserved representatives of Manticoceras from Upper Devonian (Frasnian) strata of north and east-central Iowa allows clarification of the poorly understood species Manticoceras regulare Fenton & Fenton, and marks the first recorded North American occurrence of Manticoceras lindneri Glenister. The faunal horizons correlate with the upper Manticoceas cordatum (1-y) ammonoid zone and the Palmatolepis gigas conodont zone. M. regulare can be recognized by its narrowly discoidal conch, relatively broad sutural elements, and mature conch diameter of approximately 11 cm. Occurrences of M. regulare have been restricted to the "Amana Beds" of the Independence Shale and Cerro Gordo Member …

A Roadside Technique Using Scent Lures For Measuring Relative White-Tailed Deer Abundance, William L. Franklin Jan 1986

A Roadside Technique Using Scent Lures For Measuring Relative White-Tailed Deer Abundance, William L. Franklin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The response of captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to selected commercial scent lures and the feasibility of measuring the relative abundance of wild deer with roadside scent stations were studied. Penned deer first smelled scented capsules 5.7 times more frequently than unscented controls. There was no significant difference among 5 scents tested as to whether they were smelled or not, in the amount of time deer spend smelling them, nor any preference for sex- or food-derived scents. In a high deer density area the visitation rate to scented stations was 149 and unscented was 95. In a low deer density …

An Archaeological Research Design For The Western Iowa Loess Hills, Joseph A. Tiffany

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In an effort to make archaeological knowledge of Loess Hills prehistory more comprehensive, a three stage archaeological research design is outlined. It involves: (1) obtaining an unbiased sample of archaeological sites through probabilistic survey; (2) evaluating sites identified in terms of function, age and cultural affiliation; and (3) examining selected sites with specific problem-oriented research in mind. The research goal is to test the proposition that there were unique, prehistoric Loess Hills adaptations among groups who utilized the region.

Improving Instructional Design Consultation Through The Use Of Nonverbal Communication, Julia K. Smith Brooks Jan 1986

Improving Instructional Design Consultation Through The Use Of Nonverbal Communication, Julia K. Smith Brooks

Graduate Research Papers

Communication skills play a critical role in the instructional design (ID) process. As an instructional materials developer, the instructional designer must rely heavily on verbal communication skills; as an instructional consultant, the instructional designer must rely heavily on nonverbal communication skills. The importance of nonverbal communication skills is underscored in the literature, which suggests that approximately 90% of the message in a two-way communication is based on nonverbal elements of the message (Englesman, 1974; Garrison, 1984). Thus, an effective instructional designer must develop the ability to interpret and send nonverbal messages properly.

Child Care Options: Impact On Child Development, Jane Frances Biga Wilson Jan 1986

Child Care Options: Impact On Child Development, Jane Frances Biga Wilson

Graduate Research Papers

The desire to establish learning environments that are both stimulating and responsive and which will contribute to the cognitive, emotional, language, physical, and social development of the preschool child is the goal of parents and educators alike. Piaget proposed that children pass through a series of successive stages and that they develop intellectually by acting and reacting with their world (Travers, 1982). This particular learning theory implies that an enriched environment would encourage intellectual development and has provided a rationale for early child care and education.

Communication-Related Variables And Job Satisfaction In Fast-Food Restaurants, Craig Lee Borchard Jan 1986

Communication-Related Variables And Job Satisfaction In Fast-Food Restaurants, Craig Lee Borchard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the relationship of communication-related variables to employee job satisfaction. Specifically, employee communication satisfaction with supervisor, employee participation in decision-making, participation versus desired participation level, and job satisfaction with supervisor, co-workers, promotions, pay, and work were studied. The subjects for the study were lower level employees (cooks, shift supervisors, cashiers/hospitality, and dishwashers/table bussers) in fast-food restaurants in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area. It was hypothesized that the communication with supervisor and decision participation variables would significantly predict employee job satisfaction variables. It is also hypothesized that communication satisfaction with supervisor variables would be more powerful predictors of job satisfaction …

Vocal Stress Patterns And Stuttering: A Study Of Predictive Value, Julie Anne Christy Jan 1986

Vocal Stress Patterns And Stuttering: A Study Of Predictive Value, Julie Anne Christy

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The relationship between stuttering and linguistic stress was observed within four adult stutterers. A specially designed test passage was read by each of the subjects five successive times. The passage contained 18 test syllables, nine were stressed and nine were non-stressed as indicated by dictionary diacritical markings. Six measurements of acoustic indicators of stress, including fundamental frequency, intensity, and duration, were obtained for each subject for the fluent adapted productions of the test syllables and the immediately preceding syllables. Correlated t-tests were computed to determine if significant differences existed between stressed and non-stressed phonetically matched syllables for each of the …

Plato's Crito: A Speech Act And Structuralist Analysis For Performance, Gary Gerard Gute Jan 1986

Plato's Crito: A Speech Act And Structuralist Analysis For Performance, Gary Gerard Gute

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Although scholars recognize many of Plato's early dialogues as works of significant dramatic merit, few attempts have been made to either systematically analyze them for performance or to dramatize them in their entirety. A traditional Aristotelian analysis does not facilitate bringing the dialogues to fruition in theatrical performance because of their lack of physical, external action. This study, recognizing the dramatic potential of Plato's Crito, undertakes an analysis of the dialogue for the purpose of performance . Two methodologies are applied: Speech Act and Structuralist Analyses. The study culminates in a dramatic production of the Crito.

According to speech act …
