Considerations And Preplanning In The Initial Establishment Of Telemarketing Training, Diana Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

According to McGraw Hill Inc., the average cost of an industrial sales call has now reached $150. For direct mail, over the past five years, postage rates alone have increased 80% for first class postage and 70% for bulk mail. Add to this the substantial increase in type, print, paper and labor cost, and it is easy to see that direct mail is becoming less and less affordable.

In another situation, the marketing department of a health care facility was approached by another department to develop and shoot a video promoting a new piece of equipment. Members of the marketing department had no idea where to begin---their experience was limited to print media.

Potential Differences In Self-Concept Among Adult Children Of Problem Drinkers, Thomine Sue Wilson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Prior research has Indicated that the alcoholic home environment is destructive to a child's emotional well-being* and that the conditions necessary to the development of high self-esteem are not consistently present, A large segment of previous research about children of alcoholics has not been tested with rigorous research techniques and often reflects the product of personal observations* results of extensive interviews* or case studies while working with these children. Moreover* there has been a tendency to focus on clinical populations of the young and adolescent offspring of alcoholics, with few studies being conducted in which adults were used as subjects. …

All The World's A Stage: High School Theatre As Preparation For Life, Judy D. Nebergall Jan 1987

All The World's A Stage: High School Theatre As Preparation For Life, Judy D. Nebergall

Iowa Journal of Communication

If there is commitment and determination to succeed, an exemplary theatre arts program is possible in any high school regardless of size, financial resources, or socio-economic backgrounds of the students, because the components of a theatre arts program are already in existence in every school. The six components are student actors, crew members, student audience, faculty director, school faculty and administration, and parents and community members. The observation of Jacques in Shakespeare's As You Like It that "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players . . . '' clearly applies to the lives of …

Late Holocene Paleoecology Of Southeastern Iowa: Development Of Riparian Vegetation At Nichols Marsh, R. G. Baker, D. G. Horton, H. K. Kim, A. E. Sullivan, D. M. Roosa, P. M. Witinok, W. P. Pusateri

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pollen, vascular plant and bryophyte macrofossils from peat and silt deposits that filled an oxbow lake near Nichols, Iowa provide a 2500- year record of wetland succession and of upland habitats. Radiocarbon dates of 2320 ± 90 yr B. P. (BETA 12514) near the base and 1260 ±70 yr B.P. (BETA-12513) midway up one section, and 1050 ±70 (BETA 12515) in another provide chronologic control. The pollen diagram indicates substantial changes in local wetland habitats, but less change in upland vegetation in the last 2500 years. Plant macrofossils record changes from a deep to a shallow oxbow lake during the …

Metacognition As A Theoretical Construct: Its Nature, Origins, And Application In The Secondary Reading Program, Karen Collinge Carroll

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Metacognition is a theoretical construct used to describe a type of cognitive ability through which an individual assesses the range and quality of his/her own knowledge and is able to gain insight and control over particular aspects of his/her own cognitive and affective processes. Metacognition appears to be an important factor in development of higher level thinking skills, in acquisition of knowledge, and in reading comprehension. Because of its role in reading and learning, metacognition may prove to be an ideal construct on which to base secondary reading instruction, an area of secondary curriculum which is in particular need of …

Characteristics Of The American Middle School, Md. Idris Hamdan Jan 1987

Characteristics Of The American Middle School, Md. Idris Hamdan

Graduate Research Papers

If we look back on the history of education in the United States, we find many patterns of school organization. Prior to the establishment of middle schools, the middle level of schooling was commonly known as junior high school. According to Van Til, et al., (1967), the first junior high school was established at Columbus, Ohio in 1909. Since then, both the 8-4 plan and 8-5 plan, the standard organizational patterns used for public schooling in the United States after the Civil War, have been gradually changed to the newer form--the 6-3-3 plan. The first prompting to establish a junior …

Homework Insights: Benefits, Problems, And Recommendations, Carol Plotz Bradfield Jan 1987

Homework Insights: Benefits, Problems, And Recommendations, Carol Plotz Bradfield

Graduate Research Papers

"Do your homework now. Then you can play outside." Parents have used this expression time and time again. Homework is as the word says. It is work performed at home. Homework has become a dirty word for most children. It has been a daily event since schools came into being and many systems have required that their teachers make use of homework. For the first 18 years of life, perhaps about half of the waking time, a student is potentially educative. if one hundred, eighty 6-hour school days for twelve years are assumed, then 16.4% of the potentially educative time …

Nonliteral Comprehension, Janice J. Bolger Jan 1987

Nonliteral Comprehension, Janice J. Bolger

Graduate Research Papers

There is a general concern about the reading and thinking abilities of today's youth. Of special concern are students' abilities to make inferences about what they read. Recent data show that students' basic reading skills have generally improved or have remained stable during the 1970s, but the inferential comprehension of 13- and 17-year-olds has dropped. This, study focuses on nonliteral comprehension. Specifically, this study describes how researchers have defined nonliteral comprehension and ways the nonliteral comprehension of children might be improved.

United States Participation In The North Russian Intervention, 1918-1919, Michael Andrew Hudson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The interventions by the Western powers and Japan in revolutionary Russia during the years immediately following the Bolshevik Revolution of November 1917 constitute a sorry chapter in the history of relations between the Soviet Union and its capitalist adversaries. The United States took an active, if reluctant, role in two of these misadventures. In July 1918, President Woodrow Wilson authorized the diversion of United States military forces to Vladivostok for participation in the Siberian Intervention, and to Murmansk and Archangel for participation in the Northern Intervention. The events of the intervention in the l atter zone, Murmansk and especially Archangel, …

The female athletes possessed a slightly but non-significantly higher (p > .05) physical self-concept …

A Comparison Of The Iowa Language Arts Curriculum Guide And Project S.T.A.G.E., Randall Mark Wright

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Current research on teaching strategies for language arts advocates the use of an integrated approach. This approach calls for the treatment of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in relation to each other. Thus, learning in one area may benefit the others. While current literature states that this is not commonly happening in our schools today, there is an increasing awareness of the need to implement such strategies.

To help facilitate this change, curricular guidelines have been developed by the State of Iowa to help schools develop new language arts curricula that will reflect current research. These guidelines stress the integration …
