Professional Training Of Library Media Personnel And The Effect On Students' Library/Research Skills, Roger A. Hop
Professional Training Of Library Media Personnel And The Effect On Students' Library/Research Skills, Roger A. Hop
Graduate Research Papers
We are in the midst of an era in which school systems are, out of necessity, being guided by constricting principles based on tightened budgets and increased demands for accountability. Federal and state funding of education have decreased during the last decade, general inflation and salaries have continued to rise from year to year, and the public's demands for more efficient and effective use of funds have grown louder. As a result, school programs have been evolving through an era of ever increasing critical evaluation; school boards and administrators have been searching for additional means to reduce expenses in ways …
Writing In Kindergarten, Patrice M. Schulte
Writing In Kindergarten, Patrice M. Schulte
Graduate Research Papers
Children's oral language development is easily recognized by observing their oral vocabulary development, use of sentence structure, and involvement in the functions of language (Wiseman, 1984). Young children's oral language development has been considered a natural aspect of growth, but their written language development has generally been overlooked and has not been considered a part of acquiring literacy. Research indicates that young children show knowledge of written language long before formal instruction begins: Young learners develop abilities necessary for reading and writing on their own, as they grow and have experiences, just as naturally as they learn to talk (Beardsley, …

Mother Goose: Survives And Thrives In The ‘80s, Anita Van Lancker
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to show that Mother Goose endures. The researcher expected that by looking at the more recent versions, one could see how these versions differed from the original in language and illustration. Content analysis was conducted to determine the extent of change in the language and illustrations of six selected Mother Goose nursery rhymes from thirteen copyrighted original collections from 1968-1988. Rhymes were compared with original rhymes as represented in The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes to determine the degree of change in both the language and the illustrations. A data gathering instrument was used …
Children Of Divorce: Educational Interventions, Carolyn L. H. Stephenson
Children Of Divorce: Educational Interventions, Carolyn L. H. Stephenson
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study is to 1) identify developmental responses to divorce, 2) identify the changes in life style and family functioning caused by divorce, and 3) identify how educators can effectively intervene when appropriate. This paper relates the developmental responses of children to divorce from preschool age through adolescence as reviewed in the longintudinal studies of Judith Wallerstein and colleagues, and other studies and articles. The review of literature, as it relates divorce to the effect on children's academic progress, highlights the lack of studies with this focus and the need for further research in the area.
Iowa Geology: The Early Years, Wayne I. Anderson
Iowa Geology: The Early Years, Wayne I. Anderson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
In 1975 on the occasion of the first one hundred years of the Iowa Academy of Science, Robert W. Hanson summarized the history of the organization. Additional historical accounts covering many of the science disciplines were published during the centennial year. Although geology was not treated separately in these special articles, the contributions of early geologists were important to the development of science in our state. Consequently, it is appropriate to consider the contributions of early geologists in Iowa in celebration of the one hundredth annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science. Included in the present report are the …

A Description And Explanation Of Teacher-Talk During Kindergarten Sharing Time, Debra Louise Semm Elliott
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Teacher-talk during kindergarten Sharing Time was described and explained through a qualitative study of 3 kindergarten teachers. Transcripts of 12 teacher interviews and six Sharing Time observations formed the basis of the study. Results showed that there appears to be a mismatch between teachers' stated goals and actual practice. Teacher-talk dominated much of Sharing Time and occurred in a short discourse style. Categories of teacher-talk were developed through constant comparative analysis. Two broad categories of questions and comments were further divided. Questions fell into four categories: information-seeking, clarification, management, and off-topic. Information-seeking questions were further classified as low-level literal, high-level …

The importance of early childhood education to the balance of a child's academic career has been the subject of myriad articles and studies in recent decades. Numerous school districts are operating all-day kindergarten programs, pre-kindergarten programs, and preschool programs to ensure a proper beginning to a child's challenging journey through the public school system. All subject areas have been scrutinized, but the area of number learning in young children has been particularly popular.
The Role Of Communication In The Organizational Change Process, Marilyn R. Hibbs
The Role Of Communication In The Organizational Change Process, Marilyn R. Hibbs
Graduate Research Papers
There is a common saying that change is one of the most certain things in life. While the saying may seem trite, it is even more applicable today than ever before. Alvin Toffler, in his book The Third Wave (1980), examines the factor of change in today's world, and points out the implications of the Information Age: The world that is fast emerging from the clash of new values and technologies, new geopolitical relationships, new life-styles and modes of communication, demands wholly new ideas and analogies, classifications and concepts. We cannot cram the embryonic world of tomorrow into yesterday's conventional …
Toward A Whole Language Approach In A Middle School Classroom, Shirley A. Kirby
Toward A Whole Language Approach In A Middle School Classroom, Shirley A. Kirby
Graduate Research Papers
"I like reading. I just don't like reading class." How many middle school reading teachers have heard these thoughts expressed by students? If teachers become less enthusiastic each year as they plod through the basal, page by page, skill sheet by skill sheet, is it any wonder that students have trouble generating an interest in reading? Many students have a misconception of reading; they perceive reading as the basal text and the workbook that accompanies it. They have not discovered that reading is the process of constructing meaning from the printed page in order to gain knowledge and enjoyment.
The Negative Effects Of Labeling On Intellectually Identified Gifted Children And Suggested Strategies For Alleviation, Paula A. Swalla
The Negative Effects Of Labeling On Intellectually Identified Gifted Children And Suggested Strategies For Alleviation, Paula A. Swalla
Graduate Research Papers
Concern over special education labels has existed for more than twenty years. Labeling has been found to have both positive and negative effects on those labeled as gifted. This paper reviews the research on the negative effects of labeling a child gifted and suggested strategies to alleviate these negative effects. Research indicates that the label gifted has more positive than negative effects on the majority of children labeled; however, the research also identifies a number of adverse consequences which merit consideration and possible alleviation.
Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver
Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver
Graduate Research Papers
Although the brain functions as a whole unit with both sides being active, there are areas of specialization within the brain. Research indicates that the human brain is composed of two hemispheres, which are capable of functioning independently of one another. According to Michael Gazzaniga (1983), the left hemisphere is responsible for linear, symbolic, sequential and verbal thought. The right hemisphere is responsible for holistic, concrete, random and pictorial thoughts. The left can be compared to a computer while the right is more creative and intuitive. Individuals tend to develop a preference for using one side over the other, although …

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept: A Construct Validity Study, Tracy A. Randall
The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept: A Construct Validity Study, Tracy A. Randall
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Researchers tend to agree that self-concept has an influence on the total development of the child (Briggs, 1970). Stanton (1982) suggests that educators should find ways to encourage internality in students' control orientations. Extensive research has been conducted on the constructs of locus of control and self-concept. Some research studies report interesting results concerning a dimension of self-concept--academic self-concept or self-concept as a learner--(Purkey, Raheim, & Cage, 1983; Purkey, 1970; Benner, Frey, & Gilberts, 1983).
The purpose of this study was to explore the construct independence between locus of control and learner self-concept in students at the tenth grade level. …

The Enthymematic Structure Of Metaphor, Joseph A. Sommerville
The Enthymematic Structure Of Metaphor, Joseph A. Sommerville
Iowa Journal of Communication
Aristotle himself must be held partially responsible for fueling criticism from those interested in rhetorical theory; he places his discussion of metaphor in Book III of the Rhetoric, subordinating it to discussions of types of proof, the topoi, and the example and the enthymeme. Thus metaphor is treated under the head of style and becomes an ornament of language. This placement conceals the inherently rhetorical character of metaphor. The purpose of this essay is to argue that rather than serving merely an ornamental function, the use of metaphor constitutes an inventional process, and more specifically, that the formal operation of …
A Visionary Approach To Communication Education, Virginia G. Darby
A Visionary Approach To Communication Education, Virginia G. Darby
Iowa Journal of Communication
Throughout this decade voices from the public sector as well as from within the educational sphere have focused on academic and moral deficits in our nation's schools. In our discipline, controversy has centered on communication competencies for teachers and for students, on the need to develop critical thinking skills and on the search for moral values in the classroom. Certainly, without a citizenry capable of thinking and communicating in a rational, ethical manner, the fundamental fabric of democracy becomes unraveled. What we face, then, is a crisis that threatens our democratic as well as our educational ideals. Pedagogical wrangling over …
Teaching Oral Language Appreciation, Marvin D. Jensen
Teaching Oral Language Appreciation, Marvin D. Jensen
Iowa Journal of Communication
In his memoir, Wordstruck, Robert MacNeil affirms his love of the English language in all its forms: from the Canadian English he learned as a schoolboy in Halifax to Laurence Olivier's Shakespearean cadences to the voices of the BBC during World War II, from Cockney to West Indian to Texan to American black idioms. Throughout his life, the sounds of the spoken language have struck MacNeil - as a child hearing his mother read, as an adolescent actor, as a student of T. S. Eliot and Dylan Thomas, and as a broadcast journalist.

The present study investigated the effectiveness of a combined procedure involving response interruption and DRO in the treatment of self-injurious stereotypy. A visual cue was utilized to assist in generalization and the subject's behavior was monitored outside of the treatment setting. The subject was a ten year old mentally deficient female who engaged in a self-injurious stereotypy involving the picking of skin from her fingers and hands. An ABAC single-subject design was utilized and the subject's behavior was monitored in her classroom on mornings following treatment. The treatment procedure was unsuccessful in reducing the frequency of the behavior and no …
