The Demands Of Dual Roles For Student-Athletes, Kathleen M. Peters
The Demands Of Dual Roles For Student-Athletes, Kathleen M. Peters
Graduate Research Papers
Since the beginning of intercollegiate athletics in this country, there has been controversy regarding the role they play in the total program of higher education. More recently, attention has been focused on the commercial enterprise college athletics have become. Both aspects of the controversy have affected the student-athlete. Frey (1982) stated that ever since the first intercollegiate event 1n 1852, a crew race between Harvard and Yale, "the history of intercollegiate athletics has been one of balancing the demands of external :interests (e.g., alumni/booster, entertainment and promotion) with those of the internal, educational constituency who asked questions about institutional control" …

Developing A Leadership Style Using The Situational Leadership Model, Jon Nordaas
Graduate Research Papers
Leadership is a key component in organizations. Successful organizations have one major attribute that sets them apart from unsuccessful organizations: dynamic and effective leadership (Hambleton & Gumpert, 1982). This paper will explore situational leadership as a way for principals to manage their personnel in an effective and successful manner.

Essential Ingredients Of Effective Student At-Risk Programs, Terry Lee Christiansen
Essential Ingredients Of Effective Student At-Risk Programs, Terry Lee Christiansen
Graduate Research Papers
At-risk students might be an undefinable group. There is; however, a greater consensus of the characteristics and significance this group plays toward our society as stated by Research for Better Schools (1989). McCann and Austin (1988) maintain that you must differentiate among three sets of definitions. The primary problem is in reference to students "at risk" of not achieving the goal of education which is graduation. These students are perceived as not being able to acquire knowledge or skills that would allow them to become productive members of American society.
Phase Iii And The Iowa Library Media Specialist, Joel Shoemaker
Phase Iii And The Iowa Library Media Specialist, Joel Shoemaker
Graduate Research Papers
To assess the impact of the Phase III portion of HF 499. the 11 Excellence in Education Act 11 passed in 1986 by the Iowa legislature, 163 individuals were randomly selected to complete a written survey in February, 1989. Their 135 <84%) responses suggest that library media specialists have participated in creating their local Phase III plans at high rates relative to their numbers; that a majority of districts' plans permit the proposal of individual projects; that a majority of library media specialists have proposed, implemented, and been paid for such activities; that others have participated in group projects, committee work, and/or been paid for their participation in performance-based pay plans. A minority of library media specialists report that they were required to provide services for the completion of Phase III projects of others. A majority of library media specialists, both those who have participated and those who have not, indicated that Phase III will have a positive impact on the quality, effectiveness, and performance of teachers in their district.

Influences In The Life Of Lynn Hall That Are Revealed In Her Books: A Content Analysis, Marlys A. Pearce
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to use content analysis to answer the question: Can the early experiences in the life of Lynn Hall be identified as influences that are revealed in her books? These influences were identified by Hall in her autobiographical sketches.
Thirty fiction books were selected by a stratified random sampling technique from a list of titles arranged by publication date, then in alphabetical order by title. After each book was read, the influences and comments were recorded on a checklist and tabulated to test the seven hypotheses. The findings revealed the majority of the main characters …
Evaluating School Programs For The Talented And Gifted, Kathleen Jo Croell
Evaluating School Programs For The Talented And Gifted, Kathleen Jo Croell
Graduate Research Papers
Evaluating educational programs is always a challenge and when it is a nonstandarized program such as talented and gifted programs the challenge is intensified. These programs do not usually follow a typical classroom structure therefore requiring a customized evaluation. 1 Traditionally an evaluator would study the programs' goals and objectives to see if these have been attained. As Morris and Taylor Fitz-Gibbon (1978) point out a program should start with a list of goals that explains without ambiguity what the planners of the program agree it should accomplish. Tuckman (1979) encourages the evaluator to have the checklist stated in behavioral …
The Importance Of School Climate To An Administrator, Steven Dwight Schulz
The Importance Of School Climate To An Administrator, Steven Dwight Schulz
Graduate Research Papers
Researchers throughout the country have been writing about school climate quite frequently over the past ten years. A great emphasis has been placed on the importance of school climate for making schools effective. Gottfredson and Hol llfield, (1988) believe school climate, like the climate of any other organization, determines whether the school can achieve excellence or will flounder ineffectively. A school with high levels of disorder, low morale, and poor cooperation between teachers and administrators cannot be a good place to learn or teach. And such a school is bound to have a poor public image.
Effects Of Various Prekindergarten Learning Environments On A Child's Social Development And Self-Concept, Joel E. Raasch
Effects Of Various Prekindergarten Learning Environments On A Child's Social Development And Self-Concept, Joel E. Raasch
Graduate Research Papers
An important topic in education today is the issue of preschools for four-year-olds. In particular, there is much talk about what type of curriculum is in the best interest of the prekindergarten youngster. Much is said about "developmentally-appropriate programs for preschoolers", and the search is on for the most appropriate preschool model which will bring about the most desirable and long-term results in our nation's children. This search has been intensified in recent years as state legislatures have begun considering the question of whether or not to issue mandates that would require public schools in their states to offer preschool …
Administrative Stress, Jerry Lee Hartwell
Administrative Stress, Jerry Lee Hartwell
Graduate Research Papers
Selye (1976) defines stress as "the nonspecific response of the body to any demand". The phrase "administrative stress" is often used to describe the hazard of being an administrator in an educational environment. There has been a very significant increase in the pressures that people in all levels of administration have to face and it is leading to administrative stress. A review of the literature indicates that the phrases "administrative stress" and "administrative burnout" are used interchangeable to describe this condition. What causes stress, what are the physical and mental symptoms of stress; and what can be done about administrative …
The Learning Disabled Student In Postsecondary Institutions: An Overview, Gail Ellen West
The Learning Disabled Student In Postsecondary Institutions: An Overview, Gail Ellen West
Graduate Research Papers
Historically, the focus on the learning disabled has been at the elementary and, more recently, the secondary school level. However, since the influx of so many students into postsecondary institutions, the emphasis is changing. Vogel (1982) stated that the number of programs for the learning disabled in higher education has grown significantly during the '80s as a response to concerns from learning disabled students, their parents, and professionals, and from the passage of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. However, the number of postsecondary schools offering adequate educational and support programs to learning disabled students is still small.
Adolescent Suicide: The Secondary School's Response, Stephen K. Bomgaars
Adolescent Suicide: The Secondary School's Response, Stephen K. Bomgaars
Graduate Research Papers
The number of adolescent suicides has risen steadily over the past thirty years. The United States Department of Health and Human Services reported that from 1950-1982, the suicide rate for adolescents increased by 300% (McGinnis, 1987). About 6,000 young people murder themselves each year (Keasey & Keasey, 1988). According to Johnson and Maile (1987) the problem of adolescent suicide is not confined to the United States as both Canada and Western European countries have experienced an increase in suicide rates in the past ten years. Neither is the problem confined to a particular area of the United States. The overall …

Communication Is Definition: A Theory Proposal, Robert P. Mcclure
Iowa Journal of Communication
We claim for communication many purposes and many forms. Moreover, we so generally assume that communication is positive that we seem anxious to describe negative communication as a failure to communicate. At the same time, we may say communication is negative if we think of it as manipulative. Most of us who teach and theorize about communication are wont to project the notion that communication is interactive, involving a sender, a message and a receiver. This last characterization makes it handy for us to focus our attention on any of the many examples of one or more of these three …
What Is More Real Than Rhetoric?, Diana L. Doncaster
What Is More Real Than Rhetoric?, Diana L. Doncaster
Iowa Journal of Communication
A teacher of communication courses is usually saddened by students who see no harm in stretching the truth or padding evidence "just a little" if it produces a better speech or a more effective argument. Each experience of dealing with such a student does have the positive effect of forcing the educator to re-evaluate her/his teaching and attempt to root out anything that suggests that discovering "the available means of persuasion" means "anything that works is OK". Each experience is a battle for the ethical use of rhetorical skill-a battle which stretches from the earliest centuries of rhetorical consciousness to …
A Study Of Student Perceptions Of Teacher Communication Competency, Stephen A. Bobek
A Study Of Student Perceptions Of Teacher Communication Competency, Stephen A. Bobek
Iowa Journal of Communication
Teachers must always be aware of the importance of their verbal and non-verbal communication in the classroom. "The importance of effective communication in the classroom cannot be overstated. Communication is central to the teaching process. Some even argue that communication is the teaching process." (McCroskey and Richmond, 3) Rubin and Feezel have noted that "impressions formed about teachers' communicative competence are largely based on teachers' oral communication abilities." (1986, 254)
Many colleges and universities in the United States have teacher education programs which frequently require courses is methodology, human relations, educational psychology, pedagogical theory and other related subjects. In the …

Motivation In The Introductory Public Speaking Classroom, Sharon M. Rossi, Richard A. Katula, Edmund C. Forst
Iowa Journal of Communication
In a recent issue of Change: The Magazine of Higher Education, Carnegie Foundation President Ernest L. Boyer, commenting on the foundation's study of undergraduate education at American universities and colleges, noted that, "Students are eager to get a good grade, but they're not caught up in the excitement of learning." Boyer's assertion represents a commonly held assumption, particularly among teachers of basic or required courses such as speech communication. In the public speaking classroom, despite the typical introductory pep talk on the value of effective communication for personal satisfaction, active citizenship and professional success and despite fundamentals texts that posit …

Characteristics And Treatment Of Bulimia, Cindy Becker
Characteristics And Treatment Of Bulimia, Cindy Becker
Graduate Research Papers
Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by the episodic ingestion of large quantities of food in a relatively short period of time and, in most cases, these •binges• are followed by self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse or fasting (Ordman & Kirschenbaum, 1986). The vast majority of bulimic cases are women (only 10% are male) and it is estimated that as much as 20% of high school and collegiate-aged females are actively engaged in bulimic behaviors on a regular basis (Hale & Ware, 1984). More specifically, these behaviors include various aspects of the following according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual …
Teleprompted Public Speaking, Keith Yellin
Teleprompted Public Speaking, Keith Yellin
Iowa Journal of Communication
After the ancient Greeks began committing language to written text, the "relative importance of the spoken as contrasted with the written word steadily decreased until the twentieth century, when the process began to be reversed by radio and television." (Kennedy, 111) This contemporary shift back to orality is easily observable by examining how political discourse is disseminated. The orations of Daniel Webster, Abraham Lincoln, and Stephen Douglas, for instance, were actually heard by only a limited number of people. Their words reached thousands or millions more, however, both then and today, through printed publication. In contrast, few contemporary political speeches …
Anger In Children, Judith L. Phillips
Anger In Children, Judith L. Phillips
Graduate Research Papers
In working with a variety of children, in blended families, with relationship problems, with grief issues, from dysfunctional families, and others, this writer recognized that many of these children were angry or were dealing with anger in some way. Omizo, Hershberger and Omizo (1988) confirm this awareness when they stated: "Children are seldom provided with a means of coping with angry feelings" (p. 241).
The Relationship Between Juvenile Delinquents' Behaviors And Irrational Beliefs, Jimmy Susan Binns Ramsey
The Relationship Between Juvenile Delinquents' Behaviors And Irrational Beliefs, Jimmy Susan Binns Ramsey
Graduate Research Papers
The use of adolescent aggression has been documented as being increasingly problematic (Faretra, 1981; Marohn, 1982; Short & Simeonsson, 1986). Violence in the schools has increased at a rate of sixty per cent in a five year period from 1971 to 1975 (Short & Simeonsson, 1986). A relationship has been found to exist between juvenile delinquents' use of aggressive behaviors and their use of irrational beliefs and emotional reasoning (Bandura, 1977; Ellis, 1977a, 1983; Burns, 1981). Irrational beliefs are idealized concepts or beliefs to which the user subscribes, and are based on the individual's emotional state rather than on factual …
Cross-Cultural Literacy: An American Imperative, Margaret Baird Davis
Cross-Cultural Literacy: An American Imperative, Margaret Baird Davis
Graduate Research Papers
The world is becoming a global village, say the experts. Just as individuals are dependent upon and, in turn, are depended on by their family, friends, and immediate communities, so are the nations of the world becoming highly interdependent (Brademas, 1987; Horne & Masson, 1988). The more this situation comes to pass, the more important does it become that we all make ourselves cross-culturally literate--that we become knowledgeable, that is, of the political and economic systems that exist around the world and of the many different ways people have of thinking, feeling, acting, and viewing things.

This study focused on the development of an annotated bibliography of fiction books exploring the theme of hospitalization to be used as a tool by media specialists, teachers and adults doing reading guidance for children in grades kindergarten through six (ages five through twelve).
Information from the data gathering instrument identifying bibliographic citation, grade levels, story contents and pre-admission and in-hospital fears reflected from the thirteen books read was complied identifying those fears, their frequency rates and their location in the titles in the bibliography. A subject index alphabetically listing those hospital fears and location sites follows the annotated bibliography.
Staff Development: Methods Of Increasing Student Involvement Through Active Participation, David Allen Swick Jr.
Staff Development: Methods Of Increasing Student Involvement Through Active Participation, David Allen Swick Jr.
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to provide administrators with the knowledge of certain effective active learning techniques and strategies in order that they may help improve the quality of the instruction delivered in the classrooms. Knowledge of such techniques is pertinent in order for administrators to recognize and reinforce such practices when they observe them being employed by classroom teachers. When such techniques are identified and praised by the administrator, there is greater likelihood that the classroom teacher will continue to employ such strategies (Browne and Keeley, 1985). More importantly, it is crucial that administrators have a strong knowledge …
