Participation In My Government: What Difference Can My Voice Make?: A Seven-Week Unit For Eleventh Graders, Jane C. Behrens
Participation In My Government: What Difference Can My Voice Make?: A Seven-Week Unit For Eleventh Graders, Jane C. Behrens
Draftings In
Despite courses in civics or U.S. government, many students look with apathy upon community or civic affairs, perhaps because they feel that such dry-sounding "stuff" as city codes and regulations have no relevance for them. In addition, adolescence is typically a time of rebellion against authority and institutionalism. This seven week unit, designed for eleventh graders, has been written to help young people see that their government was created to work for them, not against them, and that their opinions and ideas are important to the whole community.
Students will learn the benefits of making themselves heard by the public, …

Today emphasis has been placed on collaboration as it applies to education. Research reveals that cooperative learning, depending on how it is carried out, can increase achievement as well as social skills (Slavin, 1983, p. 443). In addition, collaborative skills in and of themselves are necessary in many vocations. However, according to Johnson et al (1986), "children and adolescents are not born instinctively knowing how to collaborate with others" (p. 73). Learning collaborative skills is an important prerequisite for academic learning, and achievement improves as students become more effective in working with each other (Johnson, Johnson, & Holubec, 1986, p. …
Labor Unions: A Part Of Our Past Or Future?, Cori Mcneilus
Labor Unions: A Part Of Our Past Or Future?, Cori Mcneilus
Draftings In
In the past two decades unions have fallen upon hard times. Although the total labor force has been increasing since 1970, the number of union members in 1988 (17 million) (Bauman 1989, p. 4) is below the 1970 level of 21.4 million (Kovach 1985, p. 850). The percentage of the work force in labor unions has fallen from a high of 42 percent in 1954 (Carrel 1989, p. 545) to 16.8 percent in 1988 (Bauman 1989, p. 4). Furthermore, the percentage of workers belonging to unions is expected to decline to 10 percent by 1995 (Taylor, 1989, p. 31). Several …

Characteristics Of Channel Catfish Populations In Streams And Rivers Of Iowa With Varying Habitats, Vaughn L. Paragamian
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
From 1983 co 1985, more than 1,000 channel catfish (Icatalurus punctatus) were sampled with rotenone from 50 streams and rivers in Iowa to assess differences in population densities, standing stocks, viral statistics, age and growth, and habitat use Catfish densities ranged from 5 fish/ha in sites on the South Skunk and Upper Iowa Rivers to more than 4,400 fish/ha at a site on the Thompson Fork of the Grand River. Standing stocks ranged from a low of 0.1 kg/ha on a site on the South Skunk River to a high of 467 kg/ha on the East Fork of the Des …
Stress And Graduate School, Irene D. Gordon
Stress And Graduate School, Irene D. Gordon
Graduate Research Papers
Graduate students face an increased number of activities and responsibilities while in graduate school that, taken together, can be stressful. Upon entering graduate school, a graduate assistant becomes involved in activities such as becoming a staff member, teachers assistant, advisor, counselor, or research assistant. The student must also carry a heavy course load in addition to the requirements of a graduate assistantship. This increase in activities is in addition to other problems the student already may face: family anxiety, unevenness in preparation and experiences among students, program inflexibility, and lack of support services for graduate students. Researchers have determined that …
Factors Affecting International Student Adjustment In The U.S., Cynthia Louise Karl
Factors Affecting International Student Adjustment In The U.S., Cynthia Louise Karl
Graduate Research Papers
The international student population is a highly visible and significant subset of the student body of many American colleges and universities. Students from other countries have been coming to the United States since 1784 (Hendricks & Skinner, 1977; Meloni, 1986), and the numbers continue to increase substantially. For example, the international student enrollment in 1930 was 9,643 students; by 1953 that number had risen to 33,647 due to the postwar efforts to help rebuild and develop other countries through direct financial aid and education (Meloni, 1986). As of 1986, the number of international students enrolled in the U.S. is almost …

These taxa, including 15 Pteridophytes, 74 Dicots, and 45 Monocots were located during a decade of field research (1979-1989) concentrated in eastern, northeastern, and northwestern Iowa. Included among these are 10 taxa previously unrecorded from the Iowa flora (Carex sterilis, Circaea X intermedia, Cypripedium calceolus var. parviflorum, Lycopodium inundatum, Opuntia macrorhiza, Salix candida X Salix rigida, Salix X clarkei, Solidago uliginosa, Spiranthes ova/is, Viola adunca), and 15 taxa (Angelica atropurpurea, Aristolochia serpentaria, Artemesia frigida, Aster linariifolius, Berula pusilla, Carex conoidea, Eleocharis pauciflora var. …
Climatic Influences On Annual Variations In Water Transparency In Lake West Okoboji, Roger W. Bachmann
Climatic Influences On Annual Variations In Water Transparency In Lake West Okoboji, Roger W. Bachmann
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Secchi disk transparencies, chlorophyll a concentrations, and total phosphorus concentrations were studied in Lake West Okoboji, Iowa, in the summers of 1971-7 3 and 1987-89. The average summer Secchi disk transparencies varied from a low of 2.5 to a high of 5.5 m during the study. The variations in the transparency of lake West Okoboji from year to year seem to be related to climatic factors such as the amounts of spring precipitation in the watershed and probably reflect changes in the annual inputs of plant nutrients. There is some indication that climatic conditions that cause the period of deep …
How Children Cope With Death And The Role Adults Play, Jean Kruse
How Children Cope With Death And The Role Adults Play, Jean Kruse
Graduate Research Papers
In the nineteen century, the experience of death was a very normal process for children to witness through the death of a brother, sister or parent. At that time most people died in the home, rather than in a hospital, and all the children were involved in caring for the dying family member. Because of this involvement children found nothing strange about death. Jackson (1965) wrote, "that for the children of that vintage death was natural, not remote" (p. 84).

Current educational literature on effective schools has cited the critical role of the principal in establishing an outstanding school. Ernest Boyer (1984) has stated that "in schools where achievement was high and where there was a clear sense of community, we invariably found that the principal made the difference" (p. 22). Such a statement encourages me to consider my own personal attitudes guiding my professional career as a secondary principal.

Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Ideas and approaches central to Science/Technology/Society (STS) have been introduced via the Chautauqua program in classrooms of nearly 1,000 Iowa teachers of grades 4 through 9 since 1985-86. Assessment of the results of STS instruction has been central to the effort supported by the National Science Teachers Association, the Iowa Utility Association, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the University of Iowa. Some of the emerging results demonstrate the advantages of an STS focus for school science.

Climate Trends In Iowa, Richard E. Carlson
Climate Trends In Iowa, Richard E. Carlson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Long-term trends for various weather elements are presented for the period 1900-1988. Summer and winter season, and annual air temperature patterns are statistically weak because of large inrerannual variability, but trends are evident. There was a general warming from 1900 until the 40's, with a leveling or slight cooling following. Since the mid-70's, a warming trend seems to be taking place, but this cannot be confirmed. Spring season air temperatures showed no trend except that the most recent 4 years (1985-1988) were decidedly warmer than normal. Winter season air temperatures showed a change in trend in the 30's, but the …

Section Iii: Effective Rural Schools: What We Know, What We Need To Know [Dreier], William Dreier
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
In the USA, rural education is the informal and formal learning occurring to infants, children, youth and adults living in the open country, farms, villages, towns, and other places located outside the many Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Informal learning takes place in the home, work place, school, and community. Formal learning takes place in the classes provided by churches and non-public schools and in the local public school districts. By far, the largest number of schools and local school districts include non-urban villages and towns. These rural areas, whose population centers are fewer than 2,500 people, include about one-third of …

Hercule Poirot V. Reality: Murder Mysteries As An Epistemic Force, Deborah M. Geisler
Iowa Journal of Communication
On Monday, October 23, 1989, a pregnant Massachusetts attorney was brutally murdered by a gunshot wound to the head. Two and a half weeks later, her infant son, delivered by Caesarian section, also died. And this murder of Carol Stuart shocked and appalled much of the nation. It was a murder bound to catch national attention-a white, suburban woman supposedly killed in cold blood by an unidentified black man. An area manhunt was launched; rewards were offered; scholarships to the victim's alma mater were established; and Boston-area residents demanded that the murderer be caught.
But nearly every week, not far …

Principal's Role With At-Risk Students, Stephen W. Vanderpol
Graduate Research Papers
In the last three years more research has taken place dealing with at-risk children than during the past 20 years. That statistic alone suggests a crisis is facing our educational system. What is an "at-risk student?" Simply stated, it means any student that is in danger of failing to complete his or her education, with an adequate level of skills (Salvin 1989).

Assisting Children Of Alcoholics In The Educational Setting, Carol J. Yager
Assisting Children Of Alcoholics In The Educational Setting, Carol J. Yager
Graduate Research Papers
Although alcoholism has existed since early times, it has been considered a disease by the American Medical Association only since 1956 (Kinney and Leaton, 1987). It is now accepted that alcoholism is a primary, progressive, chronic, and fatal disease. This disease has also been separated into distinct stages with specific behaviors correlated to each stage. As the disease progresses, deterioration occurs in all phases of life: emotionally, spiritually, and physically. In later stages, people are immobilized by self-deceiving factors and unless the drinking stops death is inevitable (Kinney and Leaton, 1987). However, as Sharon Wegscheider - Cruse notes "Few alcoholics …

The Language Of Comfort: An Ethnographic Study Of Language Functions In The Dentist-Patient Relationship, Glen William Jackson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This ethnographic study sought to identify language functions present in the dentist-child patient relationship. Specifically, the study identified language functions in the dentist's talk and determined their possible role in comforting the patient. The dentists that participated in this study were from Cedar Falls, Waterloo, and Hudson, Iowa. Five dentists were randomly chosen using the Nth Skip Method. The study asked two primary research questions. The first question asked "Are dentists making use of communication skills t hat the dental literature describes as comforting?" The second question asked "What possible language functions are employed in the reduction of distress?" The …
Gas Exchange Of Four Viburnum Species, Lisa Gayle De Berg
Gas Exchange Of Four Viburnum Species, Lisa Gayle De Berg
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In the natural environment, a plant's gas exchange and water use efficiency characteristics in response to environmental stresses such as vapor pressure deficit, temperature, light intensity, and water potential may vary according to physiological and morphological species differences, leaf types (deciduous or evergreen), and habitat types (northern and southern). In the field, laboratory, and growth chamber, the effect of vapor pressure deficit, temperature, and light intensity on gas exchange characteristics was investigated for four woody shrub species from the genus Viburnum. The species under investigation include: y. rhytidophyllum (northern evergreen), y. awabuki (southern evergreen), y. dentatum (northern deciduous), and y. …

The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which Iowa secondary school principals and teacher building representatives support a model for cooperative action in the administration of the state's secondary schools. In addition differences in the perceptions of those principals and teachers are examined and the extent to which practices in the schools reflect cooperative practices is determined.
The population for the study included all secondary teachers in Iowa identified by their local education associations as the building representative and the principals of the schools where the building representatives were employed. Data were gathered using a survey …
Principals' Perceptions About Regular Education Teachers' Attitudes Toward Integration Of Students With Handicaps, Susan Kay Posekany Sherwood
Principals' Perceptions About Regular Education Teachers' Attitudes Toward Integration Of Students With Handicaps, Susan Kay Posekany Sherwood
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
As the movement to integrate students with handicaps into regular education classrooms continues, regular education teachers are a critical component of the successful implementation of the integration process. Because building principals must assume responsibility for selecting the teachers who will be assigned integrated classrooms, this investigation determined the degree to which principals were able to predict the attitudes of regular education teachers toward the integration of students with handicaps.
From public school districts in a Midwestern state, 85 pairs of teachers and principals were randomly selected from three educational levels: (a) elementary, (b) middle, and (c) secondary. The data were …

A Project Involving Cooperative Learning Pairs Working With Problem-Solving Computer Software In A Middle School Setting, Timothy J. Feinup
A Project Involving Cooperative Learning Pairs Working With Problem-Solving Computer Software In A Middle School Setting, Timothy J. Feinup
Graduate Research Papers
Within the past ten years, schools have increasingly embraced the development of the computer as an important media aid in the instruction of problem-solving thinking skills. Cooperative learning strategies, rather than individualistic or competitive learning styles, during this same period, have become a major trend in developing conceptual instructional tasks, including the development of problem-solving strategies. This paper presents a curriculum development project for middle school students that combines the planned activities and outcomes of computer-assisted instruction with cooperative learning to develop problem-solving strategies and positive social skills.

Integrating Music With Other Content Areas, Charlesetta Michelle Dawson
Graduate Research Papers
A kindergarten class gains practice in reciting the letters of the alphabet by singing "The Alphabet Song." Musical instruments made by third grade children are used in experiments during a science unit on sounds. The mathematical concept of fractions is reinforced when fourth graders calculate musical note values of familiar tunes. Fifth grade students study the Civil War through the examination of lyrics of many songs representative of that era. In all four situations, music was utilized in the teaching of various content areas.
