Promoting the schools in the 1990's may be approached with the same seriousness as curriculum and budgetary concerns. Administrators must address this situation as Iowa's open enrollment program begins this fall. Now that students do not have to attend the school in their home district, the competition for students could be fierce. However, the temptation to market the school poses the inherent danger of commercialization.

Child Abuse And Neglect: Support And Preventative Programs For Parents, Carmen Collison
Child Abuse And Neglect: Support And Preventative Programs For Parents, Carmen Collison
Graduate Research Papers
Incidence of child abuse in this country is staggering. The United States Children's Bureau found that at least one million children are mistreated each year. Over three thousand of these children are killed by their parents or another caretaker. Studies show the abuser is not usually a raving maniac, but a "normal" individual who is overpowered by his or her personal, emotional, and environmental problems (Whitfield, 1987). To give support and aid to this group of parents is an aim of child abuse and neglect prevention programs.

Group Parent Education: Critical Issues Regarding Pet, Behavioral And Adlerian Programs, Jan Hanson
Graduate Research Papers
Parent Education has long been a national concern. Frazier and Matthes (1975) stated that efforts to help individuals develop more effective relationships with their children have increased consistently over the past seventy-five (75) years. Over the past twenty-five (25) 1 years parent education has become a complex field with numerous books, movies, and pre-packaged programs being used to guide parents (Cooney, 1981; Sherrets, Authier, & Tramontana, 1980; Rinn & Markle, 1977; Dembo, Sweitzer, & Lauritzen, 1985; Getz & Gunn, 1988).

The Why Behind Their Leaving : A Look At Student Retention, Tamara Leigh Foels
The Why Behind Their Leaving : A Look At Student Retention, Tamara Leigh Foels
Graduate Research Papers
Colleges faced with the threat of declining enrollments are examining options to continue their existence. An option which has always existed, but has frequently been overlooked, is the retention of currently enrolled students. As the quest for students becomes more critical, the option of retention becomes more obvious. It is apparent why retention of students is being given serious consideration at college campuses across the country. Tinto (1987) estimated that of 2.8 million students who entered college in 1986 as freshmen, over 1.6 million (57%) would leave their initial college without completing a degree. Of those nonpersisters, approximately 1.2 million …

Integrating Culture And Understanding Of Science Through Traditional Fairy Tale Format, Patrice Wright, Gerry D. Haukoos

Success in science results from a variety of experiences and characteristics. Some come from within the individual while others are in the environment. ~ For Native American Indians, achievement in science based upon traditional Western education and national testing traditions does not reflect American Indian knowledge of science or natural events around them. Over the centuries, American Indian cultures have exhibited a closeness with nature, even to the point of considering their relationship spiritual. Cajete (1986) reported that expressions of the science thought process are abundant in historical and traditional American Indian cultures. He indicated those processes have ranged from …
The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor In Dealing With Latchkey Children, Bruce C. Gast
The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor In Dealing With Latchkey Children, Bruce C. Gast
Graduate Research Papers
Children's care of themselves in the absence of adult supervision has existed since the industrial revolution and is an important part of current reality. To ensure that 1 keys to houses are not lost, many children, responsible for letting themselves into their homes after school, are required by their parents to wear keys on a chain around their necks. This explains where the term "latchkey" originated and why these kids are called this today. The latchkey problem is not new; it was a concern more than 80 years ago. Stroman and Duff (1982) reported that the theme of the 1943 …

Leadership Development: A Challenge To Higher Education, Cynthia J. Thompson

Our nation is in need of leaders. Alvin Toffler brought this matter to public consciousness in his book, The Third Wave (Elsner, 1984). Pace reinforced this concern when, four years later, he wrote of the need to increase the number and quality of leaders, particularly at the college level. He warned that a society as large as the United States must constantly increase the flow of qualified leaders at all levels in the system to fulfill its responsibilities ( cited in Young, 1986). Evidence that this problem is still present, and possibly getting worse, is found in the comment made …

Expenditures For Collection Development In Iowa's Public School Library Media Centers, Loraine C. Clark
Graduate Research Papers
This research paper involved a survey of 100 full-time library media specialists in Iowa's public schools to determine expenditures for collection development during the 1988-89 school year. The summary report included a comparison of the Iowa survey results to national survey findings and percentages of total educational materials budget spent on various types of media in Iowa's public schools. Iowa's mean and median expenditures for books, computer software, and other audio-visual materials were below national figures; only periodical expenditures were above. It was shown that a majority of library media specialists in Iowa spent 55 percent or more of their …

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs
The 1990 National Youth Leadership Symposium was a strong first step for the University of Northern Iowa's program to lead the examination of important content issues for youth serving organizations. The inaugural symposium has set traditions for an annual event while initiating a research and reporting sequence in support of the youth leadership profession. These are exciting new activities to enhance an often overlooked but important field of endeavor. One of the key challenges and targeted purposes of the annual Symposium is to foster awareness, responsiveness, and advocacy to the youth leadership profession.

Decentralization Of The University Counseling Services, Douglas David Kilian
Decentralization Of The University Counseling Services, Douglas David Kilian
Graduate Research Papers
There is a growing trend in colleges and universities throughout the country to reintegrate existing centralized counseling services by coordinating these resources through a decentralized concept. This has been particularly true in colleges where counseling has become an integral part of the educational program (Kapraun & Stephenson, 1982). Faculty and student personnel administrators realize that meeting student needs goes beyond acclimatization to the college environment. There is a growing momentum to go a step beyond acclimatization, to prevention, career vocational planning, lifelong wellness programming, and liaison counseling programs within the residence halls (Huebner, 1987; Kapraun & Stephenson, 1982; McLeod, Tercek, …

Educators are faced with contradictory messages from the American public regarding public education. On the one hand, the public views the schools as inferior institutions responsible for or contributing to a host of social, economic, and political ills. On the other hand, the public regards the schools as the major, and sometimes the only, institution capable of solving any number of national calamities AIDS, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, highway deaths, low voter turnouts -- the list goes on and on. Being both the problem and the solution, public education carries a heavy burden -- also a tremendous opportunity.

Confronting The Media's Con Job: The Public Does Not Have A Right To Know, James E. Sayer
Iowa Journal of Communication
That a well-informed public is a better electorate, and that the more information people have available to them, the better will be their decision-making processes and products have become increasingly axiomatic during the 200 plus years of this country's growth and development. This axiom is trotted out for public display, much like grandmother's heirloom comforter, on significant political and ceremonial occasions: electoral contests, Fourth of July celebrations, and every meeting of every chapter of Sigma Delta Chi. "The more the people know," we are told, "the better off our democratic form of government will be.”
Safe Tines Of The Narrative Paradigm: Bringing Up The Beginning Critic, Jill I. Tyler
Safe Tines Of The Narrative Paradigm: Bringing Up The Beginning Critic, Jill I. Tyler
Iowa Journal of Communication
When a young child begins to learn to eat with utensils, the careful teacher supplies the youngster with blunt, flexible forks (safe tines) with which to practice the tasks of capturing, transporting and depositing food. These tools allow the learning child to work independently, creatively and safely, providing a means for nourishment while minimizing the danger of injury.
The careful teacher of rhetorical criticism will also find safe tines useful. In this case, "safe tines" refer to flexible critical constructs with which the learner may practice the tasks of interpreting, evaluating and responding to discourse. These tools allow the learner …

Changing The Channel To Salvation: Television's Influence On Religion, Darcie Novotny
Draftings In
The revolution in mass communication has been a strong shaper of American culture (Hadden 38). Our ability to provide instantaneous global communication has resulted in an enormous flooding of information, images, fads, and fashions via television, radio, films, and computers. Because over 50 percent of all Americans watch some form of religious television (Oden 34), it is important to understand how both religion and public perception of televangelists have been changed by the onslaught of mass media.

"You Are Late. Off With Your Heads?": Time In American Pop Culture, Jennifer Rupp

Time is perceived to be a valuable resource (Lauer 4). Some people even compare managing their time with managing money: they save and they spend (Lauer 13). Technology has provided a number of timesaving devices to enable people to use time to its fullest potential, and now Americans cram as many activities as possible into a period of time. Often this rushing about is for the sole purpose of creating more leisure time. Instead, in reality the opposite occurs and people are constantly running to beat deadlines and get more done. Ironically, American Popular Culture, obsessed with saving time, has …

According to Carolyn G. Heilbrun, women need role models, or visions, of what they want to become before they can obtain those goals (16-17). Unfortunately, role models and scenarios of women who have combined successful careers and family are clearly not found in American Popular Culture.

Communication And Nonprofit Organization: Directions For The 1990s, Gordon Dabbs
Iowa Journal of Communication
While communication scholars have spent a great deal of time analyzing the culture and communication surrounding profit-seeking businesses in the last twenty years, relatively little communication research has focused on the unique communication characteristics of the nonprofits. The time has come for us to take notice of these growing businesses and to formulate organizational communication theories reflecting the structures and operations of the wave of nonprofits that continues to rise around us.
This paper will examine the nonprofits association to sketch their purposes, their economic and political growth, and their organizational properties and communication characteristics. The paper will then suggest …
Blow Again Into Flames Our Inner Lights: A Call For Professional Discourse, Cindy Schneider
Blow Again Into Flames Our Inner Lights: A Call For Professional Discourse, Cindy Schneider
Iowa Journal of Communication
Sometimes our light goes out but is blown again into flame by an encounter with another human being. Each of us owes the deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light. (Albert Schweitzer) Most teachers would recognize a desire to be one of those who blow again into flame the inner light of our students. Amid all the calls for educational reform, teacher accountability and increased achievement, how is the inner light of the teacher to remain kindled?
