The Case For The Right To Reply: Empowering Victims Of Racially-Motivated Hate Speech On The College Campus, Warren Sandmann Jan 1991

The Case For The Right To Reply: Empowering Victims Of Racially-Motivated Hate Speech On The College Campus, Warren Sandmann

Iowa Journal of Communication

What is this issue? Is there a way to put a handle on all of these disparate incidents of racially and sexually motivated expressions of hate? University of Hawaii law professor Mari Matsuda has offered one definition, a definition focusing on these expressions from the perspective of the target. Matsuda defines racially motivated hate expressions as the manifestation of the structural reality of racism in the United States. As such, these messages are ones of "threats, slurs, epithets, and disparagement (that) all hit the gut of those in the target group." Matsuda's description of hate expression creates a metaphor of …

Effects Of Visual/Verbal Associations, Anna C. Martin

Faculty Publications

Different effects of instructional strategies on recall and comprehension of terms frequently used in formal analysis of art were examined. The study looked at a synthesis of three theoretical positions: dual-coding theory; schema theory; and elaboration theory. Two-hundred and fifty sixth-grade students were randomly assigned to three groups: control subjects; graphic subjects; and transformational subjects. Instruments consisted of Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM) and the Art Vocabulary Test (AVT). The program consisted of three phases: (1) a 10-minute study session; (2) an interactive discussion; and (3) a drawing task. The results suggested that imagery strategies help students form and retain …

The Importance Of Theatre In Secondary Education, Monica L. Franzen Jan 1991

The Importance Of Theatre In Secondary Education, Monica L. Franzen

Undergraduate Student Work

With the many cutbacks in the educational system, school administrators are struggling with the decision of what co-curricular and extracurricular areas should be cut or reduced and what should remain unchanged. What should be kept or cut from the fine arts has been a controversial issue in schools for many years. It still remains a critical problem today and in the near future, faces the chance of elimination from the curriculum.

Theatre is important in the educational system. I base my argument on my own perceptions, various texts, and through personal interviews. Many of the interviewees reinforced or extended my …

Study Of Entrepreneur-Customer Communication, Bradley F. Williams Jan 1991

Study Of Entrepreneur-Customer Communication, Bradley F. Williams

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

My project consisted of an analysis of the communication process that occurs between an entrepreneur and their customers. The project research was primarily exploratory, since this topic has received very little attention in terms of academic study. Thus, my goal was to provide some insights into an important, yet overlooked, area in the field of marketing and entrepreneurship.

Traditional business communication models depict a predominantly unilateral flow of communication from a business (usually a corporation) to its customers. An example of this kind of one-direction communication would be an advertising promotion. A feedback loop is usually included in the model …

Laryngeal Compensation And Linguistic Stress In Children With Velopharyngeal Dysfunction, Ann Kathryn Lundberg Jan 1991

Laryngeal Compensation And Linguistic Stress In Children With Velopharyngeal Dysfunction, Ann Kathryn Lundberg

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Analysis of the durational data of the hypernasal subjects revealed that these subjects produced significantly longer primary stressed syllables. This result may indicate a type of laryngeal compenstation on the part of these speakers. Since they did not rely on an increase in frequency when producing stress, they may have used an increase in duration to compensate. Therefore, a deviance in the upper vocal tract may be causing differences in the physiology of the lower vocal tract for this population.

Further research is needed in this area to substantiate the present study. More information should be obtained in the area …

Generally Accepted Accounting Standards: A Standards Overload For Small Business?, Michelle L. Morgan

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The purpose of this paper is to explore the issue of the alledged standards overload problem. This exploration can be accomplished by breaking the topic down into several key areas of discussion. To fully comprehend the nature of the problem, it is necessary to have some background on current generally accepted accounting standards (GAAP): what is the nature of current accounting standards and where do they get their authority?; what is the purpose of current accounting standards, and is this purpose served for both smal 1 and/or privately held companies as wel I as for large, public companies? It is …

A Role For Fibronectin In The Development Of Beat In Chick Embryo Cardiogenesis, W. Kimryn Rathmell Jan 1991

A Role For Fibronectin In The Development Of Beat In Chick Embryo Cardiogenesis, W. Kimryn Rathmell

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Fibronectin is believed to play a directional role in the migration of precardiac mesodermal cells and m~y be involved in other aspects of cardiogenesis. In this study we investigated the role of fibronectin in the development development of heart beat by employing a chick precardiac explant culture system. Fibronectin is recognized by an integrin receptor molecule via an RGD amino acid sequence. Using a synthetic RGD peptide we have blocked the ability of any existing receptor molecules to interact with fibronectin in an attempt to break communication of the mesodermal cells with the extracellular environment. Explanted tissues treated with this …

The Use Of Selected Economic Indicators In Regression Analysis To Test Semi-Strong Market Efficiency Of Asset Pricing, Kevin E. Pearson Jan 1991

The Use Of Selected Economic Indicators In Regression Analysis To Test Semi-Strong Market Efficiency Of Asset Pricing, Kevin E. Pearson

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The concept of market efficiency is a widely known and researched concept. The profit motive present in the market combined with advancements in trading technology and company knowledge have practically eliminated mispricing in equity markets. However, the limited number of hours of trading present in stock exchanges of the United States generates the potential for a certain amount of inefficiency. This inefficiency results from the inability of various stock markets to process certain types of public information because of the timing of its arrival in relation to the operating hours of the market. This paper will outline the process followed …

Pollen Analysis Of A Late Wisconsinan Deposit In East-Central Iowa, Barbara Ann Berquam

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Peat samples from a temporary exposure in the Early Phase High Terrace of the Iowa River near Iowa City, Iowa, were analyzed for pollen. The pollen sequence, dated at 24,570 +/- 200 to 18,620 +/- 140 B.P.·, can be divided into three zones based on pollen percentages. In the basal zone (zone-1), arboreal pollen is dominated by Pinus (pine), with lesser amounts of Picea (spruce), and is interpreted to represent a Pinus-Picea boreal forest. Picea pollen percentages increase through the intermediate zone (zone-2) of the sequence as Pinus pollen percentages decline, indicating a transition to a Picea-dominated boreal forest. A …

Development Of A Seminar For Women Starting A Business As Instructional Development Consultants In The Audiovisual Industry, Denae E. Harder

Graduate Research Papers

The last decade has witnessed many changes in the business community. Small businesses have emerged as the thriving force in the U.S. economy and the increased percentage of women in this area is too great to ignore. Today women enter the small business arena for various reasons but it initially began with the women's movement in the 1970's. According to Jones (1991), the 1980's found women going into business for themselves after encountering the "glass ceiling," a barrier that kept them from advancing to upper level management. The problem is that since many women did not advance up the ladder …

Cooperative Learning And The Implications For Gifted Students, Pamela J. Hilgenberg Jan 1991

Cooperative Learning And The Implications For Gifted Students, Pamela J. Hilgenberg

Graduate Research Papers

In today's educational community, several "buzz" words surface dally ln the layperson's journals. Some of the terms are curriculum-based measurement (taking basal texts and devising a measurement tool to evaluate one school district's students>, global education (taking into consideration the need to address skills which will enable students to fit into the world marketplace), whole-language (incorporating all language arts skills along with the chosen reading texts or stories into the total curriculum), grouping (placing students in homogeneous groups to teach them a skill), and cooperative learning. The last term is not new, however. It has been present for many …

Reading Comprehension: Strategies For Intermediate Whole Language Teachers, Elaine Madsen Jan 1991

Reading Comprehension: Strategies For Intermediate Whole Language Teachers, Elaine Madsen

Graduate Research Papers

The term "whole language" appears in journal articles, in textbook ads, in workshops, and in school district adoptions. Many teachers are being required to apply whole language approaches in their classroom. The Council Bluffs Community School District, for example, recently adopted a whole language approach to teaching language arts K-6. The intermediate educators in this district want to know more about whole language and are concerned about the effect of using a whole language approach on the ability of the reader to comprehend what ls read.

Literature-Based Reading Program For Grade One, Lyn K. Nebel Jan 1991

Literature-Based Reading Program For Grade One, Lyn K. Nebel

Graduate Research Papers

The study of reading as a process conducted in the last twenty-five years has furthered the understanding of emerging literacy and, as a result, has influenced instructional programs for children. One theoretical base created from this exploration has come to be known as the "whole language concept" (Goodman, 1986). Many instructional features are related to the implementation of the whole language concept in a school program. One of the major features is the development of a literature base. Children's involvement in the reading process through works from the different genres offers many opportunities for children to relate to their reading …

Sociological Implications Of Technology: The Historical Treatment Of Technology In Sociological Theory And A Proposal For Empirical Research, Martin E. Hansen Jan 1991

Sociological Implications Of Technology: The Historical Treatment Of Technology In Sociological Theory And A Proposal For Empirical Research, Martin E. Hansen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Technology, as a form of knowledge, can be an important explanatory variable in empirical sociological investigations. In this thesis the macrohistorical concept of technology within the discipline of sociology is traced and critiqued, with special attention given to analytical misconceptions and reifications, e.g., confusing technology with its processes, products, and social consequences. An analytical model is initially presented which attempts to facilitate a better understanding of the dialectical interrelationships between technological, social, and natural (scientific) phenomena. Recent attempts to measure the effects of technology on social relationships are critiqued, particularly in their inadequate conceptualization and operationalization, confusion of cause and …

"Ego, Scriptor Cantilenae": The Cantos And Ezra Pound, Steven R. Gulick Jan 1991

"Ego, Scriptor Cantilenae": The Cantos And Ezra Pound, Steven R. Gulick

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Can poetry "make new" the world? Ezra Pound thought so. In "Cantico del Sole" he said: "The thought of what America would be like/ If the Classics had a wide circulation/ Troubles me in my sleep" (Personae 183). He came to write an 815 page poem called The Cantos in which he presents "fragments" drawn from the literature and documents of the past in an attempt to build a new world, "a paradiso terreste" (The Cantos 802). This may be seen as either a noble gesture or sheer egotism.

Pound once called The Cantos the "tale of the …

Aggressive And Non-Aggressive Black Female Students: A Comparative Study Of Selected High School Characteristics, Walter Cunningham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A major problem confronting education today is the at-risk student. In the opinion of some, the American school curriculum is a mirror of American society; and since our society had often oppressed the human potential and development of Black citizens, the school has done the same to many Black children. This writer was specifically concerned about the aggressive behavior of Black female students which places them more at-risk than the average Black student.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of Black female high school students during their 9-12th grade school experience who were involved in aggressive …
