A Survey Of School/Business Partnerships, Edward Bryan Roberts Jan 1991

A Survey Of School/Business Partnerships, Edward Bryan Roberts

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Good science teachers enrich their classes in a variety of ways with creative use of media and hands-on laboratory exercises. They also use community resources successfully to stimulate student interest (traditionally in the form of field trips and guest speakers). An extension of this idea is for educators to create an alliance or partnership with a business or other organization. The goals of the survey reported here were to discover the thoughts of people with an interest in partnerships or alliances and for the Iowa Alliance for Science to use this information to help facilitate partnerships.

Planning A Program For Pregnant Teens In Schools: An Overview, Lorraine C. Wolf Jan 1991

Planning A Program For Pregnant Teens In Schools: An Overview, Lorraine C. Wolf

Graduate Research Papers

Adams, Adams-Taylor, and Pittman (1989) estimated through research, one million teen girls (13-19 years of age) became pregnant each year and one-half of these girls gave birth. Until the 1960s, the society approved solution for pregnant teens was full term pregnancy and adoption outside the family with the exception of some teens keeping their babies in some cultures and ethnicities where it was permitted to do so. The pregnant teen was not permitted to attend public schools when it was obvious she was pregnant and was sent to public and private agencies by caring families (Vincent, 1961). In the last …

African American Males In Higher Education: Where Are They? And Why?, Wilfred M. Johnson Jan 1991

African American Males In Higher Education: Where Are They? And Why?, Wilfred M. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

Little attention has been given to the lack of African American males in significant numbers in college and universities. African American males are not found in representative numbers in postsecondary institutions in proportion to any other group. African American males students make up 2.1 % of the United States population; in contrast they only represent .04% in postsecondary institutions (Anderson, Carter, Malizio & San 1989). This paper will explore some of the reasons for this phenomenon and the resulting impact on both the educational system and society at large. It will address the following questions: (1) Where are African American …

Focus Area Four: Providing Continuity Of Service For Highly Mobile Children And Families [Wright], David Wright Jan 1991

Focus Area Four: Providing Continuity Of Service For Highly Mobile Children And Families [Wright], David Wright

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Due to a variety of reasons, families have become increasingly mobile. In many cases, the instability and mobility of families contribute significantly to placing the children at risk of school failure and other problem behaviors. This paper addresses this concept and attempts to identify the extent of the problem in Iowa. Possible solutions include assisting the child in making successful transitions to new school and community environments. An important key is to establish continuity of services and programs between families, schools, and community agencies.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Susan Newman Cleveland Jan 1991

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Susan Newman Cleveland

Graduate Research Papers

As I read these lines from A Tale of Two Ci ties, a novel about the French Revolution, I am struck with the fact that they could have been written about the state of American education today. When the "Nation at Risk" report came out in the early 80' s, it spoke of the ills of American education, and offered an abundance of "cures" in the way of strong suggestions. The report itself aroused consternation for the most part in the eyes of the American public, a public largely in favor of the sweeping reforms that were offered by this …

The Development Of A Concrete Interlocking Partition Walling Unit, Haldane L. Johnson Jan 1991

The Development Of A Concrete Interlocking Partition Walling Unit, Haldane L. Johnson

Graduate Student Work

This research aimed to develop a better method of erecting internal partition walls for the Jamaican housing industry. An interlocking concrete block wall unit was considered appropriate because it used local materials and required semi-skilled labor to erect.

A timber mold was made to manually produce the 4 x 4 x 8 inch block. The concrete mix used had a cement to aggregate ratio of 1:7.5 and a sand to gravel ratio of 1:2 and a water cement ratio of 0.753. The average compressive strength of the block determined after three days was 351.56 psi. This translates into an expected …

Military Expenditures In Developing Countries: Impetus Or Obstacle To Economic Growth?, Steven W. Armbrecht Jan 1991

Military Expenditures In Developing Countries: Impetus Or Obstacle To Economic Growth?, Steven W. Armbrecht

Draftings In

Military expenditures, it has been argued, stimulate economic growth and improve a country's standard of living. Conversely, military expenditures have also been blamed for stifling economic growth by diverting into the military sector funds sorely needed for education, medical care, and social welfare. The history of many developing countries seems to support the view that military spending has become an obstacle to economic growth.

Issue Five: Expectations And Standards Of Performance For People Of Color In Education [Willis], Karen Willis Jan 1991

Issue Five: Expectations And Standards Of Performance For People Of Color In Education [Willis], Karen Willis

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Expectations and standards of performance are often different for people of color than they are for European-Americans. People of color in education often find they are being measured against expectations that are different from those held for people of the majority culture. In some cases, lower performance is expected for minority persons. In other instances, people of color are held to higher standards of performance than are Whites. In either case, judgments about a person's ability are made on the basis of skin color, rather than on character and ability.

Institutionalized racism results in disempowerment, dishonesty, and low academic performance. …

Issue Six: Appropriate Role Models For People Of Color In Education (Social, Academic, Administration) [Sanders], Vapordeal Sanders Jan 1991

Issue Six: Appropriate Role Models For People Of Color In Education (Social, Academic, Administration) [Sanders], Vapordeal Sanders

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Accomplishing appropriate role models for people of color in education is a great challenge for predominately White institutions. Conversely, if accomplished the institutions experience greater opportunity for organizational growth in how to support people of color and how they can support the educational institution; personal growth in learning from the experiences of people of color; and an opportunity for market growth by attracting more people of color. Although the concepts in this paper apply to all educational institutions, they focus on predominately White educational institutions.

Issue Six: Appropriate Role Models For People Of Color In Education (Social, Academic, Administration) [Walton], Helen Walton

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

A beautiful cultural experience exists in the lives of African- Americans and is transmitted to each generation. Children learn from their families and from others close to them the language of the home, signals of their non-verbal communication system, and ways to protect themselves and their families from those who would strip them of their cultural inheritance. Another part of their culture teaches them to be suspect of people who show disrespect for them or what they've learned. These are the factors that offer serious implications for the probability of conflict in the educational futures of each generation (McAdoo, 1985).

Issue Six: Appropriate Role Models For People Of Color In Education (Social, Academic, Administration) [Vanlo], Dinh Vanlo

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

In 1975 under the leadership of former Governor Robert Ray, the people of Iowa opened their state, their cities, their doors, and their hearts to the refugees from Southeast Asia. Since then more than 10,000 refugees and immigrants resettled in Iowa and called it their home. Coming from less fortunate nations and circumstances, they remind us of our blessings and are supremely grateful for the things we take for granted. Like us, these refugees have a strong belief in freedom, a strong work ethic, a strong orientation to community service, a strong sense of justice and compassion for the needy, …

The Problem Of Students At Risk, J. V. Eckley Jan 1991

The Problem Of Students At Risk, J. V. Eckley

Graduate Research Papers

A number of national and state groups have issued reports over the years expressing great concern about the number of students who fail to graduate from high school. Their inability to acquire the knowledge, skills., and attitudes needed to become pr9ductive members of American society (Levin, 1986). The most recent of these reports comes from the Council of Chief State School Officers' (1987).

Response To "The Case For A Right To Reply," By Ralph Cintron, Ralph Cintron Jan 1991

Response To "The Case For A Right To Reply," By Ralph Cintron, Ralph Cintron

Iowa Journal of Communication

I am not a lawyer. I tend to think of language and how it makes culture or is made by it. Call this rhetoric, if you wish. One result is that I feel uncomfortable evaluating prescriptive practices (laws, a right to reply, and so on). I prefer considering how any prescriptive practice is itself an instantiation of cultural history. Such a position allows me to see prescriptive practices as embedded in the values and beliefs of a people and, in a sense, as "hardening" or making visible, what I call, the "assumptive network" of such a people. In short, the …

The Forum: Four Replies To "The Case For A Right To Reply", Fred Antczak

Iowa Journal of Communication

With this issue, the Iowa Journal of Speech Communication introduces a new feature which will occasionally recur. The Forum will invite responses to appropriate articles from state and national experts on the issue. It will also instantiate, as well as print can, a scholarly value that goes back at least as far as Plato. It is, however, a value that may be threatened in the increasingly busy and product-oriented work that teacher-scholars do, from elementary schools on through doctoral studies: the value of continuing controversy and conversation.

An Investigation Into The New Management Methods That Fully Utilize The Employees Potential, David R. Tink Jan 1991

An Investigation Into The New Management Methods That Fully Utilize The Employees Potential, David R. Tink

Graduate Research Papers

The problem of this study was to examine how American industries could fully utilize their human resources to be more competitive in the world market. An investigation of two progressive and innovative U.S. companies was examined. A study took place on how these companies fully utilized their employees abilities and skills. Additionally, this study was to demonstrate how these same companies have· implemented procedures and policies that helped tap into each employee's full potential.
