Is It Just About Guns? Abc News Framing Of Mass Shooting Stories On Digital Platforms, Maurice N. Emelu

Iowa Journal of Communication

Analyzing news frames in the context of mass shootings is a pertinent and timely subject in the current discussions on gun violence in the United States. This study uses the Analysis of Topic Model Networks frame analysis method to examine ABC News coverage of the 2017 Sutherland Springs, Texas, mass shooting. The study analyzed 202 news stories from ABC's X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and website. The results support previous research on legacy news channels concerning Victims, the Shooter, and Community frames. Additionally, it supports recently discovered frames— Empathy, Interventions, Reactions, and Security. The chi-square test reveals significant differences in the …

Returning To Space And Revisiting The Challenger And Columbia Addresses, Jay M. Hudkins Jan 2023

Returning To Space And Revisiting The Challenger And Columbia Addresses, Jay M. Hudkins

Iowa Journal of Communication

This article argues that Bush’s Columbia address lacked the necessary rhetorical touchstones established by Reagan’s Challenger address, the exemplar for presidential eulogistic rhetoric following a tragedy in space flight. First, a central theme found in presidential rhetoric concerning space exploration, that of characterizing astronauts as pioneers and space as the new frontier, will be traced. Next, Reagan’s eulogy to the Challenger crew, noting the speech’s points of rhetorical excellence, several of which previous scholars have articulated (Goldzwig & Dionisopoulos, 1986; Jamieson, 1988; Mister, 1986), will be outlined. The goal is to establish rhetorical touchstones by which to judge the Bush …

Assessing Policy Implementation In The Iowa Department Of Veterans Affairs: A Case-By-Case County Analysis, Dylan Boles

Graduate Research Papers

“Assessing Policy Implementation In The Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs: A CaseBy-Case County Analysis” is a research paper dedicated to determining relative efficiency of all 99 counties in Iowa in their mission to serve Veterans in the state through assessing multiple independent variables of County Veteran Service Officers (CVSOs) and their offices, and their respective impact on the dependent variable, their claims density percentages. Claims density percentages are determined by taking each individual county’s reported claims filed, per the “Running Awards by Beneficiaries by County” report produced by the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA), and dividing that by the …

Development And Implementation Of A Ngss Curriculum Unit For Astronomy In Ninth-Grade Earth And Space Science, Jessica Hughes Jan 2023

Development And Implementation Of A Ngss Curriculum Unit For Astronomy In Ninth-Grade Earth And Space Science, Jessica Hughes

Graduate Research Papers

Since the release of the NGSS in 2013, there has been a gap in available curricula that is aligned with the new standards. To fill this gap, I created and implemented a unit of study aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) on the topic of astronomy for a ninth grade earth and space science course. Much of the available curriculum is above the level of ninth grade students. This curriculum approaches the astronomy standards at the level of ninth grade students.

The research questions were “how well does the curriculum prepare students for the disciplinary core ideas (DCIs) …

The Horror Of Darwinism: The Evolution Of The Monster In Film And Popular Culture, Ava Deitrich

Honors Program Theses

In the following pages, dear reader, you will be astounded, mystified, entertained, and intrigued. Using Stephen King’s three monstrous archetypes outlined in Danse Macabre as a guide, and the 1930’s Universal Monster Films as a starting point, I trace the roots of the Vampire, Two Faced, and Thing Without a Name through time and space. Along the evolutionary track of these archetypes, I touch on changes regarding perception and performance, in relation to social and historical shifts. I will be your guide exploring the scenery, costuming, sound design, and cinematography (to name a few) as I examine each film within …

Common Creativity: Conversations With Artists And Nonartists, Will Nachazel Jan 2023

Common Creativity: Conversations With Artists And Nonartists, Will Nachazel

Honors Program Theses

I have always viewed myself as a creative person. Drawing, writing, and storytelling were the realms I thrived in growing up. I’m highly in tune with the part of myself that’s constantly coming up with new ideas, and I appreciate when I see creativity in others as well. But what I've noticed recently is that people often treat creativity as if it’s a trait that some have and others don’t. When you believe this, it becomes an easy way to brush off your own lack of artistic ability, but what else are you closing yourself off to? There must be …

Diffusion Of Carbon Nanoparticles Intercalated Into Layered Materials, Madelyn Johnson Jan 2023

Diffusion Of Carbon Nanoparticles Intercalated Into Layered Materials, Madelyn Johnson

Honors Program Theses

Using electron beam radiation, as found in a scanning electron microscope, it is possible to induce the local intercalation of carbon nanoparticles into two dimensional layered materials. This technique can be used to form insulating and optically active nanostructures in samples ranging from graphite to BSSCO. In this study, the evolution of these features with time is explored to determine the stability of such nanoparticles in layered materials.

Over the course of days and weeks, the nanostructures created this way broaden and change height. In general, it appears that material buried deep within the layers diffuses upwards to increase the …

Using Fundraising Data Strategically In Nonprofit Organizations To Drive Relational Fundraising, Anna L. Warner

Graduate Research Papers

Nonprofits are continuing to compete for resources and trustworthiness in their communities. Using data in the relational fundraising program at a nonprofit organization is one way to build both the resources needed and the trustworthiness with donors that will ultimately also result in more resources. Looking for ways to implement strategic data in relationships with donors can be time consuming and overwhelming for nonprofit professionals. The purpose of this literature review study is to examine the use of fundraising data to strategically drive relational fundraising in nonprofit organizations. The research questions address the ways in which data can be leveraged …

The Impact Of Summer Camps On The Perceptions Of Individuals With Disabilities And Their Support Systems, Sally Krull

Graduate Research Papers

There is currently a gap in services for individuals with disabilities. There is a staff shortage in the disability services field that has further exasperated many psychosocial concerns for individuals with disabilities. It has also placed an added strain on the families of these individuals. Camps can help to fill these gaps and provide a service that will have a positive impact on the individuals and their families. The staff who work at camp play a crucial part in providing this service. They need to be supported and well-trained to provide the best care available.

The following paper will examine …

Exploring The Role Of Environmental Features On Student Experience In The University Classroom With The Community Of Inquiry Framework, Heather R. Kennedy, Gloria E. Stafford Jan 2023

Exploring The Role Of Environmental Features On Student Experience In The University Classroom With The Community Of Inquiry Framework, Heather R. Kennedy, Gloria E. Stafford

Faculty Publications

An active learning classroom design recognizes the importance of students becoming engaged in their own learning. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study compared student-reported data (n = 219) and used the community of inquiry framework to evaluate the impact of environmental features on students’ experience. Students occupied traditional or active-learning classrooms, but the same course content was delivered by the same instructor. Findings indicate a preference for seating at tables versus fixed desks, appropriate personal space and sightlines to the teacher and projector screens, and gratification for forming social connections (i.e., social presence).

Local Observations Of Climate Change And Impacts On Livelihoods In Kamchatka, Russia, Victoria N. Sharakhmatova, Drew Gerkey

Faculty Publications

Indigenous communities throughout the Arctic are confronting unprecedented challenges arising from anthropogenic climate change. The inextricable connections between their livelihoods and social and environmental systems, combined with a rich foundation of individual and inter-generational collective experience and knowledge, make Indigenous communities particularly adept at observing changes in climate and understanding their impacts. In this chapter, we apply the protocol from the Local Indicators of Climate Change Impacts project to document observations and impacts of climate change in Khailino, an Indigenous community on the northern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Northeast Siberia, Russia. We use individual interviews to identify what …
