Language Policy In Sudanese-Arabic Speaking Families, Marwa Ibrahim Apr 2018

Language Policy In Sudanese-Arabic Speaking Families, Marwa Ibrahim

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

In countries like the United States, where English is the dominant language, minority languages spoken in families and communities are at risk of being lost by the second and subsequent generations. This study thus examines the language maintenance and family language policies that exist in families of first-generation immigrant Sudanese residing in a Sudanese community in a Midwest university town of 74,000. The study aims to answer how family language policy, spoken or unspoken, affects the maintenance of the children's first language. The participants in this study were first generation immigrants, identified themselves as bilingual, resided in the United States …

Experience Immigrants Have With Housing In Waterloo, Darlene Fitkin

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

The purpose of this qualitative empirical research is to examine the experiences immigrants are having with housing in Waterloo, Iowa. Waterloo has a large and growing population of immigrants. It is important to capture immigrants’ experiences, to facilitate acclamation with their new environment. Going through IBR and following their guidelines, a list of 10 open ended questions was used as a tool to interview four homebased Head Start workers. Each recorded interview was approximately one-hour long. After transcription, dedoose program was used to develop themes. All participants of the study (Head Start workers) worked mostly with Burmese families, but one …

Transforming Professional Learning Using Self-Study In An Efl Context, Mahjabeen Hussain Apr 2018

Transforming Professional Learning Using Self-Study In An Efl Context, Mahjabeen Hussain

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Engaging in reflective practices is important for a practitioner’s professional growth. As a doctoral student I, by profession an English as a foreign language (EFL) instructor, entered into a relationship of critical friendship with a colleague in Bangladesh. We chose to undertake the task of reflecting on written corrective feedback (WCF) on student writings that we strongly felt needed attention in EFL environment, i.e., our own teaching context. The self-study method was used as a systematic inquiry to focus on our WCF practices. Following Samaras and Roberts’ (2011) guidelines for instructors newly engaging in self-study and based on the concept …

Positive Language Teaching: Culturally Responsive, Strengths-Based And Empathetic, Lauren Anderson, Alyssa Hanken, Tessa Noes Horn

Research in the Capitol

The three studies in this presentation examine the use of positive psychology (the study of what goes right in life) to benefit language learners. The first study examines the implementation of culturally responsive teaching by interviewing adult Chinese students and professors in the English for Academic Purposes program and in mainstream college classes. The interviews explored culturally responsive teaching and determined how students perceived and reacted to the lessons. The second study investigates the implementation of a personal strengths intervention to mitigate learners’ foreign language anxiety and improve classroom performance. This study provided students with the opportunity to self-reflect and …

A Low-Cost Arduino-Based Home Security System, Qi Lu Apr 2018

A Low-Cost Arduino-Based Home Security System, Qi Lu

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Home security is important for every family, especially for the family which lives in a big house. Because the house is much bigger than apartment or dorm, it is hard for the owner to notice if someone is intruding into their house. On the other hand, the home security systems sell in in the market are usually expensive. To address this problem, a low-cost home security system is designed and implemented. When the system is armed, infrared sensors are used to detect intruders. When a person is detected, sensors will send the signal to the user wirelessly, and indoor alarm …

During my internship, I was able to organize 10+ events for the town. From music on Main Street every other week (Art In The Park) to special gaming events in the local theatre (PlayStation E3 Experience - in partnership with PlayStation, Mario Kart Tournament) to even free fitness classes for the community to try (POUND, Jazzercise), there was a wide variety of options (even more than what is listed) for everyone. In addition, a new Facebook Live series was created on the Chamber’s Facebook Page (Chamber Chat). Some behinds the scenes work was done as well in helping plan the …

Seniors Teach Others Real Intergenerational Experiences (S.T.O.R.I.E.)

Teacher Education Majors at the University of Northern Iowa are matched with senior adults residing at Western Home Communities. During their ten one-hour meetings, the students and residents are guided in their discussions by the book Gratitude: Affirming One Another through Stories (2013) written by UNI Emeritus Faculty, Dr. Len Froyen. Through conversations and stories, the seniors of both generations are enhancing their understanding, compassion and acceptance of each other. S.T.O.R.I.E. Time gives the seniors a chance to choose a story together that will be written for the book.

Should Division I College Athletes Receive Compensation In Excess Of Their Scholarships?, Trey Kilburg Apr 2018

Should Division I College Athletes Receive Compensation In Excess Of Their Scholarships?, Trey Kilburg

Major Themes in Economics

This paper examines the amateurism debate that has surrounded collegiate athletics since their inception in the 1800’s. The NCAA brings in enormous revenue from Bowl Games and “March Madness” without paying the student-athletes who help generate them. Large disparities in budgets and profits among Division I conferences and different sports make it almost impossible for the NCAA to create a system that would fairly compensate all student-athletes based on productivity. I conclude that student-athletes should be able to accept endorsements deals that allow them to monetize their value without costing students or colleges additional money.

Exploring Possible Humanoids On Mars: A Lesson Designed For Twice-Exceptional Gifted Students, Younis Al-Hassan, Marie Adebiyi, Shehreen Iqtadar, Dana L. Atwood-Blaine

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

This practical article presents a classroom-tested pedagogical plan to assist instructors in teaching thinking skills to gifted students with disabilities in the context of science. The lesson, which focused on using Edward de Bono thinking skills to explore humanoid images that appear in NASA photos, provided accommodations for students with hearing impairment, along with disabilities associated with short and long-term memory. The instructional design team presented the arts-integrated activity of drawing scenes showing possible ways the anomalies could have been generated, and an interactive electronic game using iPads that asked participants to gather needed items for a trip to Mars. …

Is There Water On Mars? A De Bono Skills Mystery For Twice-Exceptional Gifted Students, Christopher Cox, Megan Sova-Tower, Nathan Wear

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

Is there water on Mars? Gifted adult graduate students, some of whom represented the learner exceptionalities of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Slow Information Processing Speed, were asked to explore this mystery by applying Edward de Bono’s CoRT thinking skills of “Aims, Goals, and Objectives,” “Select,” and “Planning” to photographs of Mars landforms. Once they had determined the likelihood that the pictures depicted water on Mars, students were asked to develop three-dimensional models with recycled materials. Analysis of the findings revealed that in utilizing the de Bono CoRT thinking skills, students were able to identify sixteen different categories. Student responses had …

Mars Mysteries: Landform Pictograms, James Zabel, Mathieu Castello, Fiddelis Blessings Makaula

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

Graphic organizers are a way for teachers to accommodate students with disabilities such as poor memory or emotional disorders. This technique allows organization of thoughts and visual representation of relationships between ideas and facts. Indeed, poor memory affects students’ reflection and retention of information while emotional disorders can cause a lack of focus in the classroom. Accommodations for students with these disabilities is important because students with emotional disorders may experience social isolation, which in turn may negatively affect their levels of academic achievement. Twenty high-achieving doctoral students participated in a teaching experience designed to introduce gifted students with learning …

How Did Those Get There? Exploring Structures And Pyramids On Mars, Abby Rau, Brooke Becker

Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

The makeup of students in our classrooms is becoming more diverse. With this change comes the need for educators to provide accommodations for students and to employ a range of instructional strategies. UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Film has been a powerful tool in documenting and raising awareness about (im)migration. It can reveal the root causes of population movement, both voluntary and involuntary, and it can open our eyes to the economic, social, legal and psychological challenges of newcomers.

Beatriz (Bea) Gallardo Shaul has been involved as a film producer in bringing these issues of (im)migration to the attention of the general public and in preserving a record of the impact of these issues on the people of Guatemala. Gallardo earned a Masters in Communications from San Carlos University in Guatemala (cum laude). Her credits as a …
