Prior to the 193O's, the function of secondary school reading instruction was to expand upon the basic reading knowledge a student had acquired by concentrating on the literary works. However, by 1937, thinking began to change regarding secondary school participation in the reading skills process and, in particular, the content area teacher's participation in the teaching of reading.

The Angler’S Angle: An Ethnography Of The Bass Fishermen, Ellen Ray Millhollin Irish

The Angler's Angle is an ethnographic (cultural description) of the bass fishermen . The purpose of this thesis is two-fold: (1) to present a better understanding of the ethnographic process and its usefulness as a too l within the social sciences, and (2) to illustrate this usefulness by the study of a cultural scene that often goes unnoticed in our Western society. An examination in Chapter 1 on the background of cultural studies (undertaken for the most part to de scribe non-Western societies), sets the tone for the use of ethnography today. Performance In Family Narratives: An Ethnographic Study Of Oral Interpretation Components, Cathryn Anne Elmer-Baldner

Current folklore researchers have described the telling of family narratives as performance. The purpose of this study was to identify performance behaviors used by a selected narrator of family stories. Using oral interpretation of prose as a performance model, this researcher proposed that behaviors recognized as performance in oral interpretation were also utilized by the family storyteller. This study was designed to collect and analyze video-taped telling of family stories to determine whether the behaviors demonstrated by the family narrator in telling the story were comparable to behaviors associated with oral interpretation performance. Three General Session speakers are planned for this year's Iowa Academy of Science meeting. At 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dr. Eugene Rasmusson of the Climate Analysis Center; in Washington, D.C., will speak on "The El Nino/Southern Oscillation Phenomenon and Global Climate Fluctuations." Dr. Rasmusson was one of the early observers of climatological phenomena which have affected our weather the last few years.

Biological Illustration: Techniques and Exercises, just published by the Iowa State University Press, offers a series of introductory exercises designed to develop and increase competency with a pen and ink in biological illustrations. It is written by John C. Downey and James L. Kelly, both of the University of Northern Iowa, and is illustrated by their students in a beginning class. It is designed to meet the needs of high school, junior college, college and independent illustrators.

Communication competence is becoming a topic of increased interest. Much of this interest stems from a desire to delineate those skills that should be emphasized in speech communication education of children that will benefit them the most. The constellation of skills is often lumped into the category called communication competence. The United States is in the midst of a second public health revolution (Califano, 1979). The success of the first revolution during the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century lead to the control or eradication of major acute diseases such as; influenza, pneumonia, diphtheria, tuberculosis and gastrointestinal infections. While the death rates from these major diseases fell sharply, from 580 for every 100,000 people in 1900 to less than 30 people per 100,000 in 1970, the proportion of mortality from major chronic and degenerative diseases, such as cancer, stroke and heart disease, increased more than …

The year 1983 marks the 108th anniversary of the founding of the Academy in 1875. The first 100 years was reviewed in a special centennial issue of the Proceedings in March, 1975 in an article by this writer. Since that time, a running history of the organization has been published as the "Annual Report." This is then the eighth annual chapter in the history of the Academy since the centennial, and it is the last report of Academy affairs to be written by this author. Whether this format and practice will continue in future years depends on the choice of …
