Elementary teachers have long sought answers to ease the frustration of teaching elementary social studies. It is a subject with great potential for integration with other subject areas, yet is restricted by textbook and classroom management problems, with ambiguous local, state, and national goals. The result is that programs range from a few individually developed, enlightening models to the notion that social studies is an insignificant subject in the elementary curriculum and thus needs little attention. This study's focus is on the analysis of discrimination experienced by black athletes participating in the Big Ten Conference sports of football and basketball between the years of 1980 and 1985. The analysis followed the models established in studies performed by John W. Loy, Joseph F. McElvogue, D. Stanley Eitzen, and Norman R. Yetman.

Racial discrimination has been experienced by blacks throughout the history of sport in the United States. The Measurement Of Sex Role Identification: An Examination Of The Internal Consistency Of The Bem Sex Role Inventory And Its Relevance To Sex Role Therapy, Roger J. Eich

This study's primary focus is an empirical analysis of the Bem Sex-role Inventory (BSRI). This sex-role inventory has been heralded by many in the social sciences and has received wide acceptance. It has not, however, been without its critics. Specifically, Bem's scale has been criticized for failing to adequately protect against response tendency, for the inclusion of some of the masculine, feminine, and social desirability traits, and for claiming to measure the specific, orthogonal dimensions of masculinity and femininity. Factors Associated With The Relationship Between Juvenile Delinquency And Adult Criminality: A Sample Of State Training School Residents In Iowa, Kristin Renae Baughman

It is unclear what the relationship is between juvenile delinquency and adult criminality. Many people assume that an individual who commits several crimes as a juvenile will also commit crimes as an adult, yet most juvenile offenders do not become adult offenders. It is also unclear what role institutionalization of juvenile delinquents plays in arresting or intensifying criminal careers. Some reappear in the adult correctional system while others become lawful citizens. The current study looks at one set of the most serious juvenile delinquents, those placed in a state training school in Iowa. In order to determine the relationship between …

A Classroom Management Technique: Preparing The Classroom As An Effective Learning Environment -- One Means Of Preventive Disciplines, Kay Lents

Graduate Research Papers

A smooth-running classroom, free from disruption and chronic misbehavior but full of students involved in learning activities, does not just happen. Such classrooms exist because the teachers work at making it happen. These teachers give careful consideration to preparation of the classroom before the first day of the school year. Classroom management is one area the Educational Testing Service is working on to place in the teacher competency examinations they are preparing (Weber, et al., 1983). Because of this emphasis, classroom management may soon be a required class for graduation in the field of education.

Since the 4th century B.C., arguments have pitted the relative merits of a liberal arts education against those of vocationalism. The liberal arts, with its classic traditions and broad curricular base, for centuries has been touted as the education of the privileged class, while a practical course of study benefitted the artisan and others needing a more immediate occupation. Since the late 1960s, vocationalism has enjoyed a period of intense popularity in the American educational system. This report encompasses the year beginning July 1, 1985 to June 30, 1986 and is based on committee reports, Board minutes and the recollections of the author. Each part represents a major activity of the Academy operation.
