The Relative Frequency Of Arterio Sclerosis Of The Various Arteries, W. E. Sanders Jan 1909

The Relative Frequency Of Arterio Sclerosis Of The Various Arteries, W. E. Sanders

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The present paper is a preliminary report of one phase of a series of arterio sclerotic cases which the author studied during the summer of 1908 while engaged in pathological studies in Berlin and Munich. A brief autopsy report was taken of each case, especial attention being given to the condition of the heart and kidneys.

Some Protozoa From Fayette, Iowa, Guy West Wilson Jan 1908

Some Protozoa From Fayette, Iowa, Guy West Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the past autumn several cultures were made from ponds, springs and streams in the vicinity of Fayette for the purpose of providing material for class use. As the number of species of Protozoa represented appeared to be much greater than the author had observed elsewhere, a record of their identity and abundance was kept. A partial result of this work is the present list of thirty-three species, in addition to which several others were observed, but not identified. Inasmuch as Dr. Edmundson's "Protozoa of Iowa" formed the basis of the taxonomic portion of the work, the Euglenidae are included …

President's Address - Science Required For A General Education, John L. Tilton Jan 1908

President's Address - Science Required For A General Education, John L. Tilton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At first I thought that for this occasion I would prepare a paper on one of the important lines of recent scientific discussion. After the kind acceptance by Professor Chamberlin of our invitation to address us this evening I gave up all intention of preparing a paper, thinking that the address which we are about to hear would render the presentation of a related subject by me undesirable; but when I found that the omission of a paper styled the "Presidential Address" would be considered an unacceptable "innovation , " I immediately decided to present briefly a pedagogical question which …

The Uric Acid Ferments, Elbert W. Rockwood Jan 1908

The Uric Acid Ferments, Elbert W. Rockwood

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Within a few years our knowledge of the formation and destruction of uric acid in the body has been much broadened. For a long time after its isolation its origin, significance, place of formation and the agents active in its production and decomposition were unknown. In these respects the facts differ much in the cases of birds and mammals and only the cases of mammas will be here considered.

Protective Adaptations In The Nesting Habits Of Some Central American Birds, Morton E. Peck Jan 1908

Protective Adaptations In The Nesting Habits Of Some Central American Birds, Morton E. Peck

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

To the general rule that the struggle for existence among plants and animals is sharper and more exacting in the tropics than in cooler parts of the earth, birds form no exception. Moreover, so far at least as the region we are about to consider is concerned, the unfavorable or hostile elements in the environment of tropical birds differ greatly in kind or in proportion from those that must be provided against by birds of temperate climates. We should, therefore, expect to find a strongly marked difference between the habits, particularly the breeding habits, of the birds of the two …

Recent Alluvial Changes In Southwestern Iowa, J. E. Todd Jan 1907

Recent Alluvial Changes In Southwestern Iowa, J. E. Todd

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The region specially discussed in this paper is about five square miles in the northwest corner of Fremont County, Iowa, which is the southwest county of that State. It lies mostly on the bottom lands of the Missouri River. It is bounded on the east by a tableland rising abruptly in steep bluffs cut by deep ravines. These bluffs rise 250 to 300 feet above the plain and are composed mainly of yellowish loam, typical loess. This yields easily to erosion especially when water soaked. At such times, its cementing lime, which when dry holds it firm like a soft …

A Catalogue Of The Poisonous Plants Of Iowa, L. H. Pammel, Estelle D. Fogel Jan 1907

A Catalogue Of The Poisonous Plants Of Iowa, L. H. Pammel, Estelle D. Fogel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For a number of years we have given a course of lectures on plants poisonous and injurious to live stock to the veterinary students of the Iowa State College. From stockmen and farmers in various parts of the state we frequently receive queries in regard to poisonous plants. In some cases the queries are accompanied with specimens. We are often asked to give more detailed information. In many cases, however, the evidence of poisoning is not proven; certain weeds are found in a pasture and the farmer supposes that they may be responsible for the death of animals.

Presidential Address - Influence Of Modern Science In The Formation Of Ideals, C. O. Bates Jan 1907

Presidential Address - Influence Of Modern Science In The Formation Of Ideals, C. O. Bates

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Allow me to congratulate you on the completion of another year's successful and profitable work. Self-imposed scientific effort brings its own reward to every earnest soul in search of truth. The acquisition of new knowledge is both fascinating and stimulating. In proportion as we get knowledge at first hand, just in that proportion is the fascination and the stimulation increased, and our acquirements become a part of our being.

The Disparity Between Age And Development In The Human Family, Illustrated By Pronounced Cases Due To Thyroid Malformations., James Frederic Clarke Jan 1906

The Disparity Between Age And Development In The Human Family, Illustrated By Pronounced Cases Due To Thyroid Malformations., James Frederic Clarke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The author of Rip Van Winkle has his hero awaken from the long sleep, an old man. The writer does not violate in fiction our conception of the uniform advancement, in human growth and development, from infancy to old age. So uniform is growth in children that we associate in our minds rather definite sizes and mental conditions with certain years from birth. Dress patterns are made for a three or an eight year old girl. A shoe merchant can usually select correct shoes for your boy if he is told the age. There is not great variation from the …

The Forest Trees Of Eastern Nebraska, Charles E. Bessey Jan 1906

The Forest Trees Of Eastern Nebraska, Charles E. Bessey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In studying the distribution of the native forest-trees of Nebraska, I have evidence that most of them have migrated up the Missouri River and westward from it up the rivers which empty into it from the westerly side. A few species have come down from the Rocky Mountains and migrated eastward for greater or less distances.

A Study Of The Choroid Plexus, Walter J. Meek Jan 1906

A Study Of The Choroid Plexus, Walter J. Meek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

With the exception of scant references in the standard anatomies very little material treating of the choroid plexuses is available to the general student, and in fact many questions of interest concerning these structures still remain unanswered. The object of the author has been to review the subject up to date and to give the result of his own investigations. The work was carried on in the Neurological Laboratory of the University of Chicago.

Cladocera Of Des Moines And Vicinity, B. O. Gammon Jan 1906

Cladocera Of Des Moines And Vicinity, B. O. Gammon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This investigation was begun in April, 1901 and collections were made at various intervals during that spring. During the summer of 1901 eight or nine weeks were spent in collecting and identifying specimens. Again in the summer of 1902 the work was taken up for about five weeks and during the early part of the summer of 1903 further collections were made. At odd times during all this period new specimens have been noted as they were found in material collected for work in the Drake Zoological Laboratories.

Lichens And Recent Conceptions Of Species, Bruce Fink Jan 1906

Lichens And Recent Conceptions Of Species, Bruce Fink

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The biological atmosphere is pregnant with ideas regarding species and their evolution. We are brought face to face with the "fluctuation" view of Darwin and the more recent one of "discontinuous variation" of Bateson, later called "fluctuation" by de Vries. Pangenesis has received prominent attention in the discussions regarding evolution; and Weismann formerly thought that germinal selection accounted for all evolution though, in his recent work in two volumes, he admits that conditions of environment may affect the soma when acting continuously through many generations. Another extreme view is that expressed by Jordan in a recent number of "Science", to …

Studies Of The Collembolan Eye, J. E. Guthrie Jan 1906

Studies Of The Collembolan Eye, J. E. Guthrie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In any primitive group of animals, there is an unusual interest attached to any organ which shows a simple structure, as having a possible bearing upon the history of the organ in a more highly specialized condition, as found in higher, closely related groups. Sometimes organs of seemingly simple structure are very puzzling from the fact that we are at a loss to determine whether their condition is primitive, or is due to degradation or partial atrophy. Embryological studies are often of value in determining the case, But not always. In entomology we have surprisingly few embryological studies which are …

Relation Of The Motor Nerve Endings To Voluntary Muscle In The Frog, B. A. Place Jan 1906

Relation Of The Motor Nerve Endings To Voluntary Muscle In The Frog, B. A. Place

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This is a subject upon which most authorities differ widely, and few, if any, agree upon all points entirely. It is therefore, an inviting field tor research. Because of the extreme diversity of opinions current it has seemed best to me to formulate them in a brief way before giving the results of my own observations.

Food Of Subterranean Crustacea, L. S. Ross Jan 1906

Food Of Subterranean Crustacea, L. S. Ross

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Supply of food and demand for it is one of the important factors to be considered in the struggle for existence, a factor that insistently demands proper attention on the part of every organism in its solution of the problem whether it shall exist or shall not. Many students have observed, many have killed and dissected hundreds and thousands of animals in determining what is the character of the food supplies of various species living in the water above ground, and on the surface of the earth, but not many it seems have entered seriously into the determination of the …
