Natural Science: Seed Corn, Winfield Scott Sep 1930

Natural Science: Seed Corn, Winfield Scott

Science Bulletin

Again we come to the annual problem of seed corn and show corn. In the first place good seed corn is important to all of us because missing hills and barren stalks mean wasted labor, wasted time, and wasted land. Since human labor and time are our most valuable assets why waste them through useless endeavor by planting corn which will not grow nor yield?

We, The Jury, R. W. Getchell Sep 1930

We, The Jury, R. W. Getchell

Science Bulletin

Iowa high schools may justly be proud of their chemistry courses and of their chemistry teachers. The state ranks low in the number of schools offering this science but high in the quality of its teaching staff. One sure criterion of instructional efficiency is growth - a growth based upon the frank recognition of mistakes and intelligent effort to correct them.

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott May 1930

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

Because of their relationship to dangerous human parasites, insects have been responsible for the death of more people than all other animals put together. Confirmation of this astounding statement can be seen in the close relationship between houseflies and typhoid fever, between rat fleas and plague, tsetse flies and sleeping sickness, and that between mosquitoes and yellow fever and malaria.

Care Of Laboratory Equipment, Harold E. Murphy May 1930

Care Of Laboratory Equipment, Harold E. Murphy

Science Bulletin

"We have good equipment, but no place to keep it arranged in order so that we have quick access to it." The above statement describes the condition under which some high school departments operate. A condition of this kind places extra work upon the teacher and uses valuable time that is needed in class room instruction.

The Conservation Of Wild Flowers, O. R. Clark May 1930

The Conservation Of Wild Flowers, O. R. Clark

Science Bulletin

On almost any warm spring day when the first woodland flowers have made their appearance, it is a very common sight to see parties of children, and many older people as well, scouring the woods in search of wild flowers.

This Number Of Science Bulletin Is The Last Number For The School Year 1929-30.

Science Bulletin

This number of Science Bulletin is the last number for the school year 1929-30. We hope that we have been able to give the high school teachers of Iowa material that they have found interesting and helpful. The responses that we have had from you lead us to believe that we have been able in some measure to do this.

At The Close Of The School Year You Will Be Making Your Plans For The Summer.

Science Bulletin

At the close of the school year, you will be making your plans for the summer. Teachers have an excellent opportunity during the summer to advance themselves professionally by study and travel. Most of our universities and colleges have summer schools planned especially for teachers and I know of no better way to spend at least a part of your summer than at one of these.

Household Insects, Roy L. Abbott Jan 1930

Household Insects, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

It was said above (see November Bulletin) that practically every animal is attacked by one or more kinds of insects. Man constitutes no exception to this statement, and it is my purpose in this article to deal with a few of the insects commonly found in or around our homes. Perhaps the most familiar of all household insects is the housefly.

Single Spore Isolation, W. H. Davis Jan 1930

Single Spore Isolation, W. H. Davis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the past generation, Bacteriologists and Plant Pathologists have developed a technique for isolating unicellular forms of life. The purposes of these isolations have been to study the life history, polymorphism, physiology, parasitism and finally the classification of organisms. A brief historical review of these methods of isolation, especially those of single spores, might aid investigators in their researches and stimulate them to construct better apparatus and employ a superior technique.

Springtails As Economic Insects, Harlow B. Mills Jan 1930

Springtails As Economic Insects, Harlow B. Mills

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Springtails, or Collembola, are minute soft bodied insects which, although the number of species is small, sometimes attract attention by the numbers in which, under favorable conditions, they appear. They have been somewhat overlooked by workers in the different phases of biology; no doubt a natural consequence of their small size (1-4 mm.), and inconspicuous, retiring habits. They generally live in organic debris, or wherever there is sufficient moisture to support their existence. But for a part of one family, in which there is a poorly developed tracheal system, the respiration in this order is cutaneous and the skin must …

Muscle of parietal fossa (inserted on endolymphatic pouch). Weber, 1820. 4. Utriculus divided into anterior and posterior sections, not directly connected with each other. Retzius, 1878, 1881. 5. Otoconia instead of otoliths. Breschet, 1838. These peculiarities were discovered many decades ago; most of them are in general ignored by present day comparative anatomists and writers of laboratory manuals.

Biology In High Schools Of Iowa, George O. Hendrickson Jan 1930

Biology In High Schools Of Iowa, George O. Hendrickson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Within recent years Zoology and Botany as separate subjects have nearly disappeared from the curricula of the public High Schools of Iowa. A course known as Biology has taken their places. In an attempt to learn the nature of High School Biology the author secured sample textbooks, laboratory manuals and figures concerning adoptions from the leading publishers of school books.

The Buffalo In Iowa, L. H. Pammel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is to prove that the buffalo once occurred in Iowa because there are many Iowans who deny the presence of this noble animal in the state. Much data was collected.

The Development Of The Ovary And Oviduct Of The Gold Fish, Frank A. Stromsten Jan 1930

The Development Of The Ovary And Oviduct Of The Gold Fish, Frank A. Stromsten

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sex differentiation in the gold fish begins in embryos of about 14 to 16 mm. in length. In the female the germ cells increase rapidly in size and have a tendency to become arranged in rows. A distinct central nucleolus is not present, but round nucleolar bodies are arranged peripherally against the nuclear membrane. These bodies seem to give off buds which pass through the nuclear membrane into the cytoplasm. During the early stages the cytoplasm becomes basophilic. In very young oocytes this is limited to a narrow zone immediately surrounding the nucleus. It then spreads peripherally until the entire …

Growth, Reproduction, And Lactation On Diets Containing Soy Beans As The Sole Source Of Vitamins B And G, P. D. Wilkinson, V. E. Nelson Jan 1930

Growth, Reproduction, And Lactation On Diets Containing Soy Beans As The Sole Source Of Vitamins B And G, P. D. Wilkinson, V. E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Human beings and farm animals are dependent upon seeds for a considerable portion of their food supply. Many of these substances have been the subject of rigid dietary investigations within recent years - especially the grains - because of their great economic importance. Soy beans, which have been used as a food by Chinese and Japanese for hundreds of years, are becoming of great importance in the United States. There are many varieties of soy beans known. Granthan reports the analysis of seventeen varieties, and he does not include all. The color of the bean varies from the light yellow …
