Metabolic Rate In Relation To Sex In Amphibia (Triturus Torosus), Irvin A. Wills Jan 1935

Metabolic Rate In Relation To Sex In Amphibia (Triturus Torosus), Irvin A. Wills

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the study of the metabolic rate of Amphibia, a careful investigation has been completed for the Californian newt, Triturus torosus. Groups and single individuals have been measured at numerous intervals. The data cover the range of life history from time of early cleavage stages until time of sexual maturity. The metabolic rate is expressed in cubic millimeters of oxygen consumed per milligram of total nitrogen content of the animal per hour. The total nitrogen content of the animal was found to be a better basis of reference rather than surface area or dry weight. The oxygen consumption was measured …

Modifications Induced In The Plumage Of Passer Domesticus (Linnaeus) By Experimental Hyperthyroidism, Dorothea Starbuck Miller Jan 1935

Modifications Induced In The Plumage Of Passer Domesticus (Linnaeus) By Experimental Hyperthyroidism, Dorothea Starbuck Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Experimental hyperthyroidism was induced in normal and castrated male and female sparrows by injection of crystalline thyroxin into the breast muscle. Definite color modifications occur in the regenerating feathers of various regions, particularly in the chestnut brown contour feathers and the black breast feathers of the male. The color of the modified male plumage resembles the female type more than that of the normal male, although the plumage of the female also shows pigment changes. It is possible that the thyroid may be involved in the control of sexual dimorphism in feather pattern.

Effect Of Fluorides On Some Organic Constituents Of Blood And Physical Measurements Of Bone, D. A. Greenwood, C. A. Kempf, V. E. Nelson Jan 1935

Effect Of Fluorides On Some Organic Constituents Of Blood And Physical Measurements Of Bone, D. A. Greenwood, C. A. Kempf, V. E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The effects of excessive amounts of fluorine on the animal organism have attracted the attention of a large number of investigators recently. This interest in fluorine is associated with the fact that mottled enamel has been correlated with the presence of excessive amounts of fluorides in drinking water and, furthermore, by the fact that certain phosphatic mineral supplements are known to contain fluorine. The authors have been interested in the fluorine problem, since the discovery by Ostrem, Nelson, Greenwood, and Wilhelm (1) of mottled enamel in Iowa, due to the presence of excessive fluorides in the drinking waters in certain …

Heavy Water Obtained By The Combustion Of Dried Biological Specimens, H. L. Keil, A. W. Ralston, M. T. Kelley, W. E. Catlin, W. H. Jennings, J. Straley, H. Gilman Jan 1935

Heavy Water Obtained By The Combustion Of Dried Biological Specimens, H. L. Keil, A. W. Ralston, M. T. Kelley, W. E. Catlin, W. H. Jennings, J. Straley, H. Gilman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Dry, finely divided plant and animal tissues were oxidized by passage over hot copper oxide; the aqueous condensates were first distilled from potassium permanganate and then alone. If necessary, oxidation and distillation were repeated until there was no significant change in density. Densities were determined by a modification of the submerged magnetic float procedure, and the accuracy was one part per million. The specimens examined were practically all of the chief organs of cattle; yeasts; dairy products; and some parts of plants like corn and melons. The study is being extended to other biological specimens, normal and pathological.

Simultaneous Records Of Gastric And Bodily Movements Of Puppies, Richard Holcomb, T. W. Richards Jan 1935

Simultaneous Records Of Gastric And Bodily Movements Of Puppies, Richard Holcomb, T. W. Richards

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to work out techniques for the simultaneous study of gastric and bodily movements of newborn infants. The preliminary work was done on puppies. Using an animal stabilimeter for the graphic recording of bodily activities, and the balloon technique for measurement of stomach contractions, records were obtained from two puppies. Although the number of cases was too small to permit of quantitative analysis of results, nevertheless about 600 feet of records of the two indices of behavior were secured affording an ample sampling of data for qualitative study. Techniques used are briefly described.

The Reliability Of The Psychoneurotic Inventory With Delinquent Boys, Harold M. Williams, Newell C. Kephart, H. Max Houtchens Jan 1935

The Reliability Of The Psychoneurotic Inventory With Delinquent Boys, Harold M. Williams, Newell C. Kephart, H. Max Houtchens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of the psychoneurotic inventory when given under varying conditions. The conditions chosen were the group situation and the individual interview after a definite attempt had been made to establish rapport with the subject. The subjects were forty-eight delinquent boys from two state institutions. The Woodworth-Cady Personal Data Sheet and the Bell Adjustment Inventory were used. In the oral interview six questions from the Cady and fifty-three questions from the Bell inventory were used. Results indicate a 20 to 40 per cent reversal in identical items between the two methods of …

Hampton Tusk Of Mastodon, Emmett J. Cable

Mastodon Tusk Background Material

On September 23, last, there was unearthed a large tusk in a gravel pit on the farm of W. S. Heuermann, section 21, Reeve township, Franklin County, about four miles south of the town of Hampton, Iowa. While loading gravel, one of the workmen noticed something sticking out of the gravels that resembled a horn. Upon closer examination it was found to be a giant tusk, the largest of its kind, according to the best information available, ever found. The tusk was complete before it was broken by the workmen. The length was 11 feet, 7½ inches, while the circumference, …

A Case Of Art Ability Following Sight Recovery In Seven-Year-Old Child Blind From Birth, Norman C. Meier Jan 1934

A Case Of Art Ability Following Sight Recovery In Seven-Year-Old Child Blind From Birth, Norman C. Meier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study reports an investigation of a case of art ability in a child blind from birth until two months before the first picture was produced last December. The defective vision was caused by congenitally imperfect visual apparatus including nystagmus and complete double cataract. The latter was subjected to a series of operations mostly of the needling type with the expectation that the fluids would clear up the cataract substance. Not finding any reaction of this type developing, the surgeon resorted to the expedient of removing both natural lenses, thereby giving the subject a fair degree of vision through the …

Some Chemical Properties Of Vitamin E, H. S. Olcott Jan 1934

Some Chemical Properties Of Vitamin E, H. S. Olcott

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In continuation of work toward the isolation and identification of vitamin E,1 the following observations have been made. The inactive product obtained by mild bromination of vitamin E concentrates can be reactivated by boiling with Zn dust and HCl in methanol solution. Vitamin E was not destroyed by the catalytic hydrogenation of concentrates at 200° and 200 atmospheres pressure, but the concentrates, after such treatment, were still unsaturated, as indicated by iodine number determinations. An active concentrate of vitamin E has been prepared from crude cottonseed oil.

Some Similarities Of Nuclear Organization In The Basidium And The Animal Spermatocyte, J. E. Sass Jan 1934

Some Similarities Of Nuclear Organization In The Basidium And The Animal Spermatocyte, J. E. Sass

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

After the fusion of the dikaryon in the basidium of Coprinus sterquilinus the fusion nucleus undergoes considerable enlargement. Associated with the nucleus there is a large "nebenkern." The latter body consists of a hyaline matrix containing a variable number of saucer shaped chromophilic platelets. As the fusion nucleus advances into the meiotic prophase, the nebenkern expands, the platelets scatter in an irregular manner into the cytoplasm, and apparently increase in number. The material of the nebenkern moves down toward the base of the basidium, and does not seem to be intimately associated with the subsequent meiotic processes of the nucleus.

Further Studies On The Nutritive Value Of Alcohol-Extracted Animal Tissues And The Supplements Required For Growth And Lactation, Walter H. Seegers, H. A. Mattill Jan 1934

Further Studies On The Nutritive Value Of Alcohol-Extracted Animal Tissues And The Supplements Required For Growth And Lactation, Walter H. Seegers, H. A. Mattill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In order to reveal more clearly the nutritive value of beef heart, kidney, round, and liver, these tissues, after hot alcohol extraction, were incorporated at a 15 per cent protein level in a ration adequate in the recognized factors necessary for normal nutrition. A simultaneous study of the whole dried tissues, at the same level of protein intake, revealed that rats fed the whole tissue made better gains than those on the respective extracted tissues. In those groups receiving the extracted material the most rapid growth was on kidney, and the poorest on liver, while round and heart gave intermediate …

Aluminum In Nutrition, H. H. Keil, V. E. Nelson Jan 1934

Aluminum In Nutrition, H. H. Keil, V. E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Only a few of the large number of papers on aluminum in nutrition have considered the effect of this element on reproduction and lactation. McCollum, Rask, and Becker (1), Myers and Mull (2), Lyman and Scott (3), and MacKenzie (4) reported no ill effects on reproduction and lactation from the addition of aluminum to the diet. The amounts of the element ingested varied from 0.02 per cent to 0.12 per cent, usually as potassium or sodium aluminum sulphate; although McCollum and co-workers employed A1Cl3 as the source of Al. Schaeffer and co-workers (5), using alum phosphate baking powder in …
