A Comparison Of The Forest Floras Along The Des Moines And Missouri Rivers, John M. Aikman, Charles L. Gilly Jan 1948

A Comparison Of The Forest Floras Along The Des Moines And Missouri Rivers, John M. Aikman, Charles L. Gilly

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A cursory examination of the deciduous forest of eastern North America, at intervals from its center (14) in the Ohio River basin westward, discloses changes in the structure of the forest characterized chiefly by a reduction in number of species and in the abundance and size of the component trees. Beyond the Mississippi river in Iowa and eastern Nebraska the forest flora is concentrated chiefly along streams flowing diagonally southeastward. Bordering these streams the deciduous forest extends into the prairie.

Entomological Notes Taken While In The Orient, D. D. Millspaugh Jan 1948

Entomological Notes Taken While In The Orient, D. D. Millspaugh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

These observations were made while with the United States of America Typhus Commission during the period from November 1944 to November 1945 in the Orient. The unit base was situated near Myitkyina, Burma, which is located on the banks of the upper Irrawaddy River in north central Burma. Consequently most specimens are from that vicinity. The paper is given to acquaint others with the situations at hand and inform you of various existing conditions there.

Studies On Excystment Of Clinostomum Metacercariae By Use Of Artificial Digestion, Marilyn Hemenway Jan 1948

Studies On Excystment Of Clinostomum Metacercariae By Use Of Artificial Digestion, Marilyn Hemenway

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For many years parasitologists have studied a group of animals called flukes. Although much is known about them now, difficulty has been encountered in obtaining the metacercarial form for study. At present there is no universally satisfactory method available to free metacercariae from the cyst walls that enclose them. The development of such a method would remove a stumbling block from the path of further study of the fluke life histories.

Chronic Hypertension In Dogs Following Occlusion Of The Carotid Arteries, Ronald E. Scantlebury Jan 1948

Chronic Hypertension In Dogs Following Occlusion Of The Carotid Arteries, Ronald E. Scantlebury

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Acute experiments involving ligation of both carotid arteries revealed that blood pressure, recorded from the femoral vein of dogs, remained elevated for the duration of each experiment, or from six to fourteen hours. To determine if similar results could be obtained in chronic experiments the common carotid arteries of three dogs were ligated. The apparatus used for recording blood pressure consisted of a Baumanometer attached to a pediatrics cuff which was secured around the hind leg by means of a leather wristlet. Both oscillatory and auscultatory methods were used. As the latter method was found to give more consistent systolic …

The Role Of An Irrelevant Drive Stimulus In The Acquisition Of Habit Strength, Max Ulric Eninger Jan 1948

The Role Of An Irrelevant Drive Stimulus In The Acquisition Of Habit Strength, Max Ulric Eninger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the concepts most central to Clark L. Hull's systematic theory of behavior is the concept of habit strength, a logical construct which represents the strength of learning in an organism. Habit strength has the status of an intervening variable, and by that, it is meant that it is an hypothetical state of an organism, which is functionally related to antecedent, observable and manipulable events, on the one side, and to certain response manifestations, such as latency, frequency, and resistance to extinction, on the other. It is the task of the experimentalist in the field of learning theory to …

The Place Of Biology In General Education, Martin L. Grant Jan 1948

The Place Of Biology In General Education, Martin L. Grant

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

General Education is the term used to express the idea that there is a common body of knowledge, of attitudes, and of behavior-patterns that should be considered of such universal significance as to necessitate its formal incorporation into the curriculum of all collegiate institutions. The idea is as old as formal education itself, and back in the day when there was only one curriculum in some educational institutions all education was general education. However, as specialized and professional curricula developed, fewer and fewer areas of subject matter remained to be explored by all students of a particular college, such that …

The Effects Of Paradichlorobenzene On Fungi, Eugene W. Elliott Jan 1948

The Effects Of Paradichlorobenzene On Fungi, Eugene W. Elliott

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The need for methods of controlling mite infestations of fungus cultures is felt in every mycological laboratory. Whenever plant or animal material is brought in from the field, there is danger of bringing in also mites or their eggs. If their presence is not recognized in the infested culture and they are not exterminated there, they may pass from culture to culture, mixing and contaminating them all.

The Iowa Lakeside Laboratory - A Prairieless Field Laboratory, Ada Hayden Jan 1948

The Iowa Lakeside Laboratory - A Prairieless Field Laboratory, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa is a prairie state and thus her institutions and students must wrestle with problems growing out of prairie environment. Slightly more than a hundred years ago, about five-sixths of the state consisted of virgin grassland. For thousands of years the prairie vegetation together with air, weather, and water in the course of time, has been making soil; as season after season, organic matter has been deposited among the particles of pulverized rock. Most of the prairie which lived in centuries past, now lies below the surface of the soil; and with the removal of the sod by cultivation, the …

The Background And Outlook Of Students Taking Elementary Botany At Iowa Wesleyan College, Phyllis Latta, Jean S. Morrow Jan 1948

The Background And Outlook Of Students Taking Elementary Botany At Iowa Wesleyan College, Phyllis Latta, Jean S. Morrow

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Does it help a college student taking botany to have had a course in high school biology? "Why are you taking botany?" That was one of the questions asked a class of forty-two students at Iowa Wesleyan College during their first class meeting of elementary Botany in September of 947. Many indicated that they were taking it to fulfill their eight hour science requirement for graduation, and some of these indicated interest in nature and biology. Twelve out of the forty-two were definitely biology majors or minors.

An Investigation Of Learning In A T-Maze With Relevant Drives Satisfied, Irving Maltzman Jan 1948

An Investigation Of Learning In A T-Maze With Relevant Drives Satisfied, Irving Maltzman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Psychologists agree, in general, that the role of motivation in determining the behavior of organisms is an important one. However, different interpretations arise when one attempts to specify precisely what this role may be. Some psychologists believe that motivation serves only as a forcer or activator of behavior. Others hold that in addition to being an activator of behavior motivation must be reduced for learning to occur. Thus, field theorists such as Tolman and Leeper state that the acquisition of learning is not a function of the number of reinforcements, or drive state reductions. Rather, acquisition is dependent upon the …

Introduction Of The Belgian Schipperke Dog Into The United States, Max. A. Beemblossom Jan 1947

Introduction Of The Belgian Schipperke Dog Into The United States, Max. A. Beemblossom

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Schipperke (pronounced Skipper-ke) is a small stubby, jet black dog which weighs about 12 to 20 pounds and stands to the mature height of 12 inches. Its small foxy head carries a pair of oval, dark brown eyes, which portray expression and inquisitiveness. Its nose is small and comes to a moderate stop. The fur covering its small erect ears, head and legs is smooth, but the abundant, dense, black fur which covers the rest of the body is coarse and harsh to the touch. At the front of the neck the hair forms a culotte or a cape-like …

Paraperanema Longicauda, N. G., N. Sp. (Protozoa; Euglenida; Peranemidae), Fae. M. Shawhan, Theodore L. Jahn Jan 1947

Paraperanema Longicauda, N. G., N. Sp. (Protozoa; Euglenida; Peranemidae), Fae. M. Shawhan, Theodore L. Jahn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The flagellate family Peranemidae contains a number of genera which are characterized by the fact that in locomotion the flagellum is held straight anteriorly for about two-thirds of its length and beats only near the tip, thereby giving rise to a smooth "gliding" or "creeping" motion of the organism without rotation or gyration. This type of locomotion is readily noted in the common type genus Peranema. Other characteristics of the genera ordinarily placed in the family are varied (review, Jahn, 1946). Some genera have a rigid body; others are plastic. Some have one or more rod-like structures, the so-called "pharyngeal …

The Address Of The President: Old Wine In New Bottles, Joseph C. Gilman Jan 1947

The Address Of The President: Old Wine In New Bottles, Joseph C. Gilman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fungi, such as mushrooms, plant pathogens, molds, and mildews have been known from the time man began to take an interest in his natural surroundings. The plant pathologists cite the Bible for their early records, and we know that mushrooms were a source of inspiration to ancient Roman architects in the adornment of buildings. Their sudden appearance in unexpected places gives them an aura of mystery that enfolds them like a mantle and lends interest to them even today. When we add to these attributes their great diversity of form and color, their beauty and their repulsiveness, their uses and …

Pollen Germination In Relation To Group Size, H. W. Beams, R. L. King Jan 1947

Pollen Germination In Relation To Group Size, H. W. Beams, R. L. King

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In recent experiments involving the germination of the pollen grains of Vinca rosea, it was observed that relatively poor germination occurred in isolated grains and among those grains aggregated in small groups (Beams and King, 1944). These preliminary observations seemed to warrant a further study of this problem. Accordingly, experiments were designed to determine some of the effects of population density on the percentage germination of these cells.

Mechanism Of Protein Synthesis, W. E. Loomis Jan 1947

Mechanism Of Protein Synthesis, W. E. Loomis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Animal muscle proteins are stated by Rose (10) to contain 21 amino acids of which 10 must be derived directly from the food while 11 can be modified by transamination provided some other primary amino acid is supplied. Although storage and particularly seed proteins are relatively simple in their structural pattern and amino acid content, herbivorous, and eventually all, animals derive their amino acids entirely from plant products. It seems reasonable to assume, therefore, that leaf proteins are comparable in complexity and amino acid distribution to muscle proteins.

Progress Report On Revision Of Curriculum In Biology For Iowa High Schools, Richard F. Trump Jan 1947

Progress Report On Revision Of Curriculum In Biology For Iowa High Schools, Richard F. Trump

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When our committee submitted a list of objectives for high school biology to one of our colleagues for criticism, he commented in the margin, "Making objectives has been a favorite indoor sport of educators for a number of years; but attaining the objectives is a different species of animal!" From the outset of our investigation we have been aware that we could contribute very little to science teaching by producing a better set of aims or objectives. We know that for a long time teachers with good objectives have taught poor biology, while other teachers with the same objectives-or with …
