Age, Growth, And Food Habits Of Johnny, Slenderhead And Blacksided Darters Of Boone County, Lowa, James R. Karr
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Age, growth, and food habit studies were done on 61 johnny darters, Etheostoma nigrum, 25 slenderhead darters, Percina phoxocephala, and 18 blacksided darters, P. maculata, taken from the Des Moines River, Boone County, Iowa, during the summer 1962. The growth rate of blacksided darter is faster than either of the other two species. Coefficients of condition, length-weight relationships, and body-scale relationships are similar for the three species. The food of all species is over 90% insect. Leeches and tapeworms parasitized the darters.
Preparing Our Students For The Future, Mary Janela
Preparing Our Students For The Future, Mary Janela
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Science education must advance with the times. Methods and ideas must change. We, as teachers, are being closely scrutinized. We can no longer sit back complacently. Since Sputnik, there has been grave concern over the ability of our students to apply knowledge to practical problems. Students are naturally curious so we must develop their inquiring minds and instill in them habits of sound reasoning, accurate judgment, and careful evaluation. To live in our democracy of the twentieth century the students must be trained to develop their powers of critical thinking.
Notes On Comparative Tolerance Of Some Iowa Turtles To Oxygen Deficiency (Hypoxia), Christopher H. Dodge, G. Edgar Folk Jr.
Notes On Comparative Tolerance Of Some Iowa Turtles To Oxygen Deficiency (Hypoxia), Christopher H. Dodge, G. Edgar Folk Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Six species of Iowa turtles (including pharyngeal water-pumpers and non-pumpers) were tested for resistance to anoxia. Five species of juveniles were included in the series. With the exception of Trionyx, adult aquatic turtles tolerated hypoxia longer than juveniles of the same species. Some terrestrial species were as tolerant as some aquatic species. Maximum tolerance time submerged (18° to 19°C) was 56 hours for an equatic species, Chrysemys picta, whereas that of a terrestrial species, Terrapene ornata, was 12 hours.

Effect Of Irradiation On Nissl Granules In Rat Spinal Cord Neurons - A Pilot Study, S. D. Miroyiannis, B. A. Raines, V. Jurczenko
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Literature concerning the structure and function of Nissl granules and the effect of irradiation on the central nervous system is reviewed. Four groups of rats were irradiated in the lower thoracic spinal region, using doses of 600 r, 900 r, 1200 r, and 4200 r respectively. Higher doses of the irradiation caused depletion of the Nissl granules and other effects on the nerve cells. Increasing chromatolysis was found with increasing doses of irradiation. These findings warrant further study.

Relative Mitochondrial Volume In Liver Cells Of A/Jax Mice Under Influence Of Carbon Tetrachloride, Jim N. Tone, Leland P. Johnson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The purpose of this study was to determine the relative volume of mitochondria in situ in hepatic cells adjacent to the interlobular veins in the livers of normal A-Jax mice and of A-Jax mice fed carbon tetrachloride dosages for varying periods of time. The liver tissues were fixed in Regaud's fluid, sectioned at 3 microns, and stained with iron haematoxylin. A procedure developed by Meglitsch et al. was utilized in determining the relative mitochondrial volume of the hepatic cells. The following were determined in the study: (1) normal mice older than six weeks possessed a greater relative mitochondrial volume in …
The Effects Of 600 Roentgens Of X-1 Irradiation On The Nuclei Of Mouse Liver Cells, Laverne Boldhaupt
The Effects Of 600 Roentgens Of X-1 Irradiation On The Nuclei Of Mouse Liver Cells, Laverne Boldhaupt
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Four methods were employed to detect a change in the parenchymal nuclei of liver cells in 8 = week old female A-Jax mice after receiving 600 roentgens of localized X-irradiation. These methods were: (1) determination of the percentage of parenchymal cell volume made up of nuclear material by means of the Chalkley point = ratio method, (2) estimation of the actual nuclear volume by means of camera lucida drawings, (3) estimation of the number of nuclei per cc of tissue, and (4) estimation of the ploidy distribution of the nuclei as inferred from nuclear volumes. Irradiated and non-irradiated mice were …

Two specimens of the western hog-nosed snake (Heterodon nasicus nasicus Baird and Girrard) are reported from a sand prairie in Louisa County, Iowa. Also reported from the same locality is a specimen of the eastern massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus Rafinesque).
Return Of Pigment In Regenerative Tissue After Inhibition By Phenylthiourea, Francis Clare Ladd
Return Of Pigment In Regenerative Tissue After Inhibition By Phenylthiourea, Francis Clare Ladd
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Inhibition of melanogenesis in larval cells of five amphibian species (two genera) was attained by phenylthiourea treatment. Buff-colored granules were demonstrated in cells of three species, gray granules in two. Pigment returned five to fifteen minutes after withdrawal of PTU. The delay is thought to be due to the time needed for the autocatalytic formation of some dihydroxyphenylalanine, which with tyrosinase is required for melanogenesis, as reported by Lerner and Case. Results obtained with living cells were corroborated by study of fixed material. The data support an origin within the Golgi complex or endoplasmic reticulum.
Viability Of Trichinella Spiralis Larvae Stored In Serum, W. J. Zimmerman, John Mathews
Viability Of Trichinella Spiralis Larvae Stored In Serum, W. J. Zimmerman, John Mathews
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Studies were made to determine the viability of Trichinella spiralis larvae stored in immune and nonimmune swine sera at refrigerator and room temperatures. In trial 1, the trichinae were maintained at room temperature in immune sera for 14 days with only slight reduction in viability, while 7 days storage in nonimmune sera reduced infectivity by nearly 50%. All trichinae were noninfective in both types of sera at 28 days. Room temperature storage in trial 2 gave no loss in viability after 7 days storage in nonimmune sera while infectivity for trichinae stored 7 days in immune sera was 33% of …
The Vegetation Of The Glacial Border During The Wisconsin Maximum, L. J. Eilers
The Vegetation Of The Glacial Border During The Wisconsin Maximum, L. J. Eilers
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The climate of the glacial boundary during the Wisconsin maximum was generally cooler and moister than at present. There is some evidence that a frost climate prevailed for some time at the glacial margin, suggesting that a tundra-like vegetation existed there. Pollen profiles indicate that a Picea-Abies forest existed south of the glacial margin and probably extended up to it during periods of climatic amelioration.
Studies On The Possible Transmission Of Trichopyton Equinum By The Common Stable Fly, John L. Richard
Studies On The Possible Transmission Of Trichopyton Equinum By The Common Stable Fly, John L. Richard
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Stomoxys calcitrans failed to transmit Trichophyton equinum from infected to uninfected susceptible ponies and from infected to uninfected guinea pigs. Flies that had fed on lesions caused by this strain of T. equinum could not be demonstrated to carry the fungus. T. equinum was shown to be viable in the skin lesions by cultural methods and tissues of the lesions were shown to be infectious for guinea pigs.
Natural Area Conservation In Iowa, S. Galen Smith
Natural Area Conservation In Iowa, S. Galen Smith
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Natural areas are being rapidly destroyed throughout the world and especially in Iowa with its intensive agriculture. Natural areas are valuable as sources of research materials, for documentation of accomplished research, for teaching, and for recreation. Through cooperative action between public and private organizations, many natural areas have been preserved in Iowa. However, recreational and other use of these areas may destroy their natural values. It is important that many more natural areas be preserved by such organizations as The Nature Conservancy as well as the state. Of particular value are teaching and research areas near schools, unusual habitats with …
Notes On The Biology Of The Jackrabbit In Iowa, Paul D. Kline
Notes On The Biology Of The Jackrabbit In Iowa, Paul D. Kline
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
White-tailed jackrabbits, Lepus townsendii campanius Hollister, are found throughout Iowa with the exception of a few southeastern counties. Over much of their range they are relatively rare. They appear in greatest abundance on the recently glaciated soils in northern and central counties, and on the Missouri loess soils of the west-central counties. Dry growing seasons seem conducive to hare abundance; populations decline during wet seasons. Jackrabbits provide considerable hunting sport during winter. Their pelts are utilized in felt manufacture and their flesh as a staple food for ranch mink. They are known to eat sprouting corn and soybeans, and occasionally …
A Study Of The Esterification Of 1, 4-Cyclohexanedimethanol, Robert Keith Harter
A Study Of The Esterification Of 1, 4-Cyclohexanedimethanol, Robert Keith Harter
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The alicyclic glycol, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol* has recently been made available in volume quantities by Eastman Chemical Products, Inc. Experimental data obtained by their own laboratories indicate that the diol has unusually good reactivity. 1 The reactivity of the diol has been attributed to the two primary hydroxyl groups . Derivatives of the diol may be of use industrially because they exhibit thermal and hydrolytic stability. Several diesters show excellent permanence as plasticizers in plastic films. 2

Vernal Breeding Of Cottontails In Iowa, Paul D. Kline
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Studies of 399 cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus mearnsii) taken during the winter and spring of 1958 through 1961 have established the early portion of the breeding season for the species in Iowa. Males attained breeding condition starting in February. Pregnant females occurred late in February. Most females became pregnant for the first time in March. All females examined after April 1 were pregnant. Differences in commencement of the breeding season from one year to another were noted. A statistically significant difference in average size of first and second embryonic litters was noted. Litters from northern Iowa averaged larger than those …
Iowa Fungi Parasitic On Nematodes, Don C. Norton
Iowa Fungi Parasitic On Nematodes, Don C. Norton
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Seventeen species of fungi parasitic on nematodes are newly recorded in Iowa. These are Acrostalagmus obovatus, Arthrobotrys conoides, A. musiformis, A. oligospora, Dactylaria brochopaga, Dactyldla acrochaeta, D. doedycoides, Haptoglossa heterospora, Harposporium anguillulae, H. lilliputanum, H. oxycoracum, Meria coniospora, Nematoctonus tylosporus, Spicaria coccospora, Stylopage grandis, S. leiohypha and Triposporina aphanopaga. A species of Zoophagus which captured nematodes was found in rotting wood and leaf mulch. Arthrobotrys conoides was the most common nematode parasitic fungus found in forage legume fields. It was followed in prevalence by a sterile fungus. In woodlands, A. oligospora predominated followed by Dactylella gephyropaga.
Anomalous Gas Exchange In Ascorbate Oxidation By The Myrothecium Enzyme, E. B. Lillehoj, F. G. Smith
Anomalous Gas Exchange In Ascorbate Oxidation By The Myrothecium Enzyme, E. B. Lillehoj, F. G. Smith
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Manometric studies were employed to assay for ascorbic acid oxidase activity in cell free homogenates from the mycelium of the mold Myrothecium verrucaria. It was found that gas exchange measurements deviated from expected stoichiometry based on the utilization of one-half of a mole of oxygen for every mole of ascorbate oxidized. Oxygen was consumed in excess of the expected amount and carbon dioxide was produced during the course of the reaction. Apparently, the ascorbic acid oxidase reaction which produces dehydroascorbic acid is accompanied by or followed by other reactions involving oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide evolution.
Ovarian Analysis For Data On Corpora Lutea Changes In White-Tailed Deer, Arnold O. Haugen, David L. Trauger
Ovarian Analysis For Data On Corpora Lutea Changes In White-Tailed Deer, Arnold O. Haugen, David L. Trauger
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The reproductive capacity of the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Iowa was determined for the period 1957 to 1961. Ovarian structures were checked in 425 pairs of ovaries. Physical characteristics of corpora lutea and corpora albicantia were checked. Breeding by fawns was indicated by the presence of an average of 1.09 corpora lutea per doe in their first winter of life, and by 0.87 corpora albicantia between the ages of 1 and 2 years. This indicates a loss or lack of detection of 25 per cent of the corpora albicantia. As is to be expected, no corpora albicantia were …

Scheming For Resource Management, Lester F. Faber
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During the past 25 years much good conservation work has been done in Iowa. It is now time to re-evaluate existing facilities and services provided for Iowa citizens by the Conservation Commission. It is time to take stock of what we have in relation to existing public needs, and to plan ahead to meet anticipated demands by the people of this state. To decide what to do in the future it is perhaps best to set out existing problems and add a pinch of crystal ball to see what the future might hold. Studies and surveys must be carried out …
Effects Of Continued Selfing On Hymenolepis Nano (Cestoda), Wallace A. Rodgers, Martin J. Ulmer
Effects Of Continued Selfing On Hymenolepis Nano (Cestoda), Wallace A. Rodgers, Martin J. Ulmer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The effects of selfing on Hymenolepis nana were investigated by establishing single infections in mice, thus ensuring self-fertilization. Selfing appears to increase the frequency of cysticercoid abnormalities. The proportion of eggs developing into cysticercoids in Tribolium confusum appears to decrease with continued selfing. Similarly, the proportion of cysticercoids developing into adults in mice decreases with continued selfing. Selfing causes no observable variation in the size of either adults or cysticercoids, nor does it cause changes in the frequency of appearance of certain morphological variants of the adult worm. The variant of reversal of genital pore appears to cause sterility of …
Active Transport Of D-Galactose And 3-0-Methylglucose By Turtle Lntestine, Alice Marie Fox
Active Transport Of D-Galactose And 3-0-Methylglucose By Turtle Lntestine, Alice Marie Fox
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Isolated segments of the intestine of turtle (Chrysemys picta) were found to transport D-galactose and 3-0-methyglucose against a concentration gradient in vitro at 30° C. Uptake of both sugars by the mucosal epithelium was directly dependent upon the concentration of sugar in the external fluid. Evidence indicated that 3-methylglucose is not metabolized by turtle intestinal tissue while D-galactose is. Both sugars were absorbed well by upper or middle intestinal segments, but 3-0-methyglucose was absorbed at a faster rate than D-galactose. It was concluded that neither substitution of the hydroxyl group at the third Carbon of the ring by a …
