Saints included in the database came from the Litany of Saints prayer, saints listed in the official calendar of the Catholic church, saints mentioned in three religion textbook series, and saint names cross-referenced to the most common names given to babies at birth. Biographical information was compiled from fourteen collective biographical sources and placed in nine fields of the database. This database will enable …

The Use Of Multiple Intelligences In Designing Curriculum For An Early Childhood Classroom, Dawn Osterhaus Jan 1997

The Use Of Multiple Intelligences In Designing Curriculum For An Early Childhood Classroom, Dawn Osterhaus

Graduate Research Papers

Early childhood curriculum implementation is not yet well represented in the literature pertaining to multiple intelligences. For purposes of this project, the literature pertaining to early childhood classrooms where the seven multiple intelligences were implemented was reviewed, and a preschool implementing the seven multiple intelligences has been written. This curriculum makes a difference in how the authors' lesson plans are designed and classroom activities are chosen. The resulting curriculum may also make a difference in how other early childhood educators set up their overall curriculum, and provides an easy-to-follow resource guide of potential use when planning individual units and activities.

Story Retelling In The Elementary Classroom, Kathy J. Struck Jan 1997

Story Retelling In The Elementary Classroom, Kathy J. Struck

Graduate Research Papers

Story retelling is a natural approach to teaching language, for it centers on whole units of language. As an instructional strategy, story retelling can promote children's sense of story and oral and written language abilities. This paper describes procedures for fostering story retelling, accompanied by different means of story retelling and suggested pieces of quality literature.

User Disorientation Related To Instructional Hypermedia Programs, Sandy S. Sutterer Jan 1997

User Disorientation Related To Instructional Hypermedia Programs, Sandy S. Sutterer

Graduate Research Papers

Instructional hypennedia programs seem to define the current trend in today's educational institutions. These multimedia programs, most often found on CD-Roms (compact disks, which can be read, but not written to), make use of the computer to coordinate and present text, graphics, audio, animation, and video within a single document. They are classified as "hype1media" because of the way in which the various elements can be accessed. Rather than being limited to a linear presentation, in which each element is dispensed in a predetermined sequence to all users, Yang and Moore (1995) define hypermedia as a "non-linear association of information …

Understanding Of Wetlands As Expressed By Selected Community Leaders, Donald Nathan Bardole Jan 1997

Understanding Of Wetlands As Expressed By Selected Community Leaders, Donald Nathan Bardole

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study focuses on ascertaining the understanding of wetlands by selected community and state leaders and determining the source of that knowledge. Because of the subjects' positions of influence, this information may become an important element in understanding the decisions made by those community and state leaders. An interview survey was designed and piloted for this study. Community and state leadership positions were first delineated and then individuals selected from each category. The subjects varied considerably in their knowledge of wetlands, showed the presence of professional expediency, and agreed that regulation in some form is necessary. The wetlands knowledge held …

Ecomorphology Of Peromyscus In Iowa, Frederick Dramani Biga Jan 1997

Ecomorphology Of Peromyscus In Iowa, Frederick Dramani Biga

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) and white-footed mice (Peromyscus /eucopus noveboracensis) were collected from weedy and prairie habitats of Black Hawk County, and white-footed mice were collected from forested areas of Hardin County, Iowa. Twenty-three external and cranial characters were measured from 125 deer mice and 72 white-footed mice. Analysis of means by t-tests showed significant sexual dimorphism in deer mice in four cranial characters; palatine width at 3rd molar, width of foramen magnum, width of 3rd molar, and width of the incisor. Sexual dimorphism was also found in white-footed mice in three external and one cranial character: total length, …

Role Of Calcium And Other Cations On Contractile Vacuole Activity Of Tetrahymena Thermophila, Robert William Bird Jan 1997

Role Of Calcium And Other Cations On Contractile Vacuole Activity Of Tetrahymena Thermophila, Robert William Bird

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The contractile vacuole (CV) of Tetrahymena removes fluids from the cell and maintains cellular integrity. Although many studies have been done, it is not fully understood what controls its function. Therefore, this study sought to further elucidate an understanding of what controls the activity of the CV. The effect of calcium on CV activity was studied. Twenty-four hour cultures of Tetrahymena were centrifuged, washed in an experimental solution and isolated. Single cells were measured and analyzed using computer video imaging and analysis programs. Compared to control cells, cells treated with calcium have statistically significant differences (P < 0.00001) in the following parameters: smaller overall cell volume, CV volume, and the interval between contractions. Calcium has an effect on CV activity. Increases in calcium result in decreases in cell volume and CV volume. Cadmium treated cells differed (P < 0.00001) from control cells in cell volume, CV volume, kinetics (slope) of contraction, and the interval between contractions. Increases in cadmium, relative to calcium, result in increased cell and CV volumes. Taken together, these results indicate that the control of CV activity in Tetrahymena is through stretch-activated ion selective calcium channels.

Demonstrating The Need For Health Educators On Short-Term Medical Missions: An Analysis Of Intestinal Parasitic Infections In A Haitian Clinic Population, Janel Jo Brakke Jan 1997

Demonstrating The Need For Health Educators On Short-Term Medical Missions: An Analysis Of Intestinal Parasitic Infections In A Haitian Clinic Population, Janel Jo Brakke

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the need for health educators on short-term medical missions to developing countries. Specifically, the study was designed to analyze age-specific and gender-specific rates of intestinal parasitic infections in a rural Haitian, mountain clinic population. An extensive review of related literature indicated that 80% of the world's population lives in developing nations, primarily in poverty. Despite the tremendous efforts made by governments and international organizations, the basic health needs of developing nations are not being met (Djukanovic & Mach, 1975; King, 1966; Werner, Thuman, & Maxwell, 1996). Problems of contaminated water, improper sewage …

An Examination Of Environmental Sensitivity Among Supporters Of An Outdoor Recreation Area, Rodney James Blackman Jan 1997

An Examination Of Environmental Sensitivity Among Supporters Of An Outdoor Recreation Area, Rodney James Blackman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The environment as an issue has been prominently before the public for over three decades. Yet the question of how much people know about the natural environment and how committed they are to the environment has seldom been considered in research literature. Research of this nature is needed because without it individuals interested in the preservation and conservation of the environment cannot be sure how their efforts to increase people's environmental sensitivity should be applied. The purpose of this study was to examine the level and extent of environmental sensitivity among supporters of an outdoor recreation area/facility in northeast Iowa. …

Fat Storing Patterns Of Migrating Sharp-Shinned Hawks, David John Conrads Jan 1997

Fat Storing Patterns Of Migrating Sharp-Shinned Hawks, David John Conrads

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many species of birds store fat as the primary fuel for migration. Although this is well-documented in many avian families, little is known about fat-storing patterns of migrating birds of prey. Pre-migratory fattening has been recorded in falcons and presumed in buteos. However, fat-storing patterns in migrating Accipiter hawks has not been documented. This study examined the fat-storing patterns of Sharp-shinned Hawks (A. striatus) during a portion of its fall migration. During Sharp-shinned Hawk migration three possible fat-storing patterns are predicted: I) fat deposition increases, 2) fat deposition is maintained, or 3) fat deposition decreases. To determine which strategy is …

Attitudes Toward Aging Lesbians: An Exploratory Study, Karen E. Cunningham Jan 1997

Attitudes Toward Aging Lesbians: An Exploratory Study, Karen E. Cunningham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of midwestern college students toward older lesbians. It is hypothesized, due to the commonly held assumptions that older women are "asexual" and that the popular image of homosexuals is extremely negative, that the lesbian identity will go unrecognized by others outside of those to whom they have disclosed their sexual orientation. Variables considered in this study include: (a) knowledge of aging and (b) attitudes toward homosexuality. Two hundred and fifty midwestern college students completed questionnaires that assessed their attitudes toward lesbians, their knowledge of aging, and their attitudes toward aging …

Lithographers' Opinions About Waterless Lithography, Devang Pranlal Mehta Jan 1997

Lithographers' Opinions About Waterless Lithography, Devang Pranlal Mehta

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purposes of this study were to identify the advantages and disadvantages of waterless litho in comparison with traditional litho, to solve the controversial issues, to forecast the growth of waterless litho, and to inform graphic arts professionals about it. The problem of this research was to identify and measure perceived controversial issues for using the waterless litho process. These controversial issues were related to the return on investment and operating costs involved, productivity, quality of images, eco-friendliness, and technical problems associated with waterless litho.

Due to the fact that waterless litho was a developing technology and some controversial issues …

Macrophyte-Macroinvertebrate Interactions In A Lentic Ecosystem And The Effect Of Fluridone Treatment To Control Myriophyllum Spicatum L., Gregory J. Moeller Jan 1997

Macrophyte-Macroinvertebrate Interactions In A Lentic Ecosystem And The Effect Of Fluridone Treatment To Control Myriophyllum Spicatum L., Gregory J. Moeller

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Myriophyllum spicatum L. is an exotic macrophyte that can become pestiferous in lentic ecosystems. Two field studies were conducted to investigate: 1) epiphytic macroinvertebrates associated with M. spicatum and native macrophytes; and 2) epiphytic macroinvertebrate community response to fluridone treatment for M. spicatum control.

In the first study evaluating epiphytic macroinvertebrates associated with M. spicatum and native macrophytes, triplicate samples were collected at three sites in both Auburn and Zumbra Lakes, Minnesota, USA. One site in each lake contained primarily M. spicatum, the second site contained M. spicatum and native vegetation, and the third site was dominated by native …

Fuzzy Logic: An Analysis Of Logical Connectives And Their Characterizations, John F. Hamman Jan 1997

Fuzzy Logic: An Analysis Of Logical Connectives And Their Characterizations, John F. Hamman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The focus of this thesis is to determine exactly which functions serve as appropriate fuzzy negation, conjunction and disjunction functions. To this end, the first chapter serves as motivation for why fuzzy logic is needed, and includes an original demonstration of the inadequacy of many valued logics to resolve the sorites paradox. Chapter 2 serves as an introduction to fuzzy sets and logic. The canonical fuzzy set of tall men is examined as a motivating example, and the chapter concludes with a discussion of membership functions.

Four desirable conditions of the negation function are given in Chapter 3, but it …

Susan Faludi's Backlash As Constitutive Rhetoric, Susan L. Biesecker-Mast

Iowa Journal of Communication

Since about the middle of the nineteenth century, American politics have been punctuated by the emergence, transformation, and marginalization of a women's movement. Beginning in 1848 with the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention and ending in 1920 with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, the first wave of the women's movement struggled toward the recognition of American women as United States citizens. After more than forty years of comparative inactivity, a second wave of the women's movement emerged in the mid-1960s which continued, extended, and challenged both the strategies used and the goals set by the first …

The Changing School, Nancy L. File Jan 1996

The Changing School, Nancy L. File

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The increasing use of technology in our schools has required educators to take a serious look at the way we are teaching our students. The classroom of today is very different than that of just a few years ago. The availability of the rapidly developing computer-related technologies has had the most dramatic effect in our schools. We are now in the information age, and our teaching and learning styles must reflect that.

Teachers As Information Specialists, Marjorie L. Pappas Jan 1996

Teachers As Information Specialists, Marjorie L. Pappas

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Today's children will inherit an information-rich world where knowledge and learning will be a critical part of their lives. Lewis Perelman (1992) suggested:

Learning or education was a task of childhood in preparation for entering adult life and work. Now learning is literally the work of the majority of U.S. jobs and will be what virtually all adults-whether employed, unemployed, or 'on welfare'-will do for a living the early years of the twenty-first century. (p. 23)

Technology is fueling this information-rich environment and enabling a paradigm shift as storage formats change from paper to electronic.

How Will Technology Change The Teacher's Role?, Raymond Smith

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Today, technology in the schools is causing several changes. With the advances in communications along with access to powerful computers in the world, we are seeing the role of the teacher being changed in several areas.

With high speed communications such as the Internet, students can now meet and exchange ideas instantly with others anywhere in the world. Students can now start to understand other cultures firsthand. World wide communications will create new educational materials that will allow teachers to set up "people to people" projects on the Internet. These projects could include "Keypal," the U.S. Post Office equivalent of …
