This book, Swallow Summer, is a popular account of the Browns fifteenth year at Cedar Point Biological Station in Keith County, Nebraska. Brown presents a daily log of the activities that he undertakes for the 1995 field season, describing the work supporting his research program. In the preface, Brown hopes Swallow Summer can explain his fascination with Cliff Swallows and why he enjoys his research. His intent is to describe "the challenges, thrills, and frustrations that come with studying wild animals in the …

Morphology, Ultrastructure, And Function Of Extrafloral Nectaries In Three Species Of Caesalpiniaceae, Lenore T. Durkee, Matthew H. Haber, Lisa Dorn, Ann Remington

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Light and electron microscopy reveal that the morphologically well-differentiated petiolar nectaries of Chamaecrista fasciculata, Senna hepecarpa, and S. marilandica have an unusually simple anatomy consisting of an epidermis immediately subtended by a mass of small, loosely-packed parenchyma cells. Vascular strands from the petiolar bundles enter the nectary and terminate as phloem within or near this parenchyma. In mature, secreting nectaries, the cuticle of the epidermis extends between the epidermal cells and into the nectary parenchyma, where it occupies, but does not occlude, much of the free space of this tissue. The cutin is not found below the level …

The Use Of Computer Animations In Teaching Science, Mo Aljaroudi

Graduate Research Papers

The primary purpose of this research paper is to investigate the effectiveness of computer animations in chemistry teaching. This is done by first defining what computer animation is and giving an historical background of its development, and then by describing levels of chemistry understanding, general and cognitive functions of animations, and exploring aspects that make animations and their applications effective in the context of chemistry teaching. Also, the paper describes how computer animations increase and enhance conceptual understanding, long-term retention, achievement, and attitudes toward subject matter. Implications are given for instructors to more effectively incorporate computer animations into their instructional …

The Use Of Art Therapy In Counseling Children, Laura Longo Jan 1999

The Use Of Art Therapy In Counseling Children, Laura Longo

Graduate Research Papers

Art is being used more and more by counselors working with children, particularly within the school setting because it allows for children to communicate nonverbally in a timely manner. "Art therapy in a school setting can offer children the opportunity to work through obstacles that are impeding their educational progress. It can facilitate appropriate social behaviors and promote healthy affective development" (Bush, 1997, p. 16).

The purpose of this paper is to explore how art is used in counseling children and examine specific techniques. Also, the author will focus on the stages of artistic development of children, the use of …

Dissociative Identity Disorder : Features, Etiology, And Treatment, Gretchen Elizabeth Honsell Jan 1999

Dissociative Identity Disorder : Features, Etiology, And Treatment, Gretchen Elizabeth Honsell

Graduate Research Papers

Dissociative Identity Disorder appears to be diagnosed more frequently in the current clinical arena. This may be connected to increased awareness of how people respond and cope with traumatic events, both singular and prolonged or serial. This increase in diagnoses may also correspond with new associations between childhood abuse and trauma, as well as research into how trauma is coded in memory.

Dissociation can be viewed as a natural phenomena that, when overly utilized as a defense against trauma and its impact, may develop in some persons into DID. Treatment of DID tends to progress through four phases: initial, middle, …

Management And Leadership: Two Important Concepts That Together Make And Excellent Administrator, Stacey J. Ward Jan 1999

Management And Leadership: Two Important Concepts That Together Make And Excellent Administrator, Stacey J. Ward

Graduate Research Papers

Throughout my high school years, I wanted to be a wealthy business woman. I dabbled in the stock market, read the Wall Street Journal, imagined owning a business one day, and even worked as in intern for a brokerage company. It was evident that I would study business, and become involved in business after college. There was just one problem. My past would reveal my true feelings of success.

Balanacing The Ethical Conundrums Of Internet Research: An Existentialist View From The Trenches, Jim Thomas Jan 1999

Balanacing The Ethical Conundrums Of Internet Research: An Existentialist View From The Trenches, Jim Thomas

Iowa Journal of Communication

The fundamental ethical questions posed by new technology are not new. Basic beliefs in the precept that it is better to do good than ill do not change. What changes is that relationship between behaviors and the ethical conceptions by which we judge them shift and become ambiguous, vague, and perceived through a sometimes foggy prism. The problem for those involved in Net activity, then is not one of defining new ethical principles or revising or identifying new categorical imperatives. Our task instead is one of understanding the social bases of the relationship between technology and conflicts over the meaning …

The Red Road Approach To Healing As Used In Native American Adolescent Addiction Treatment, Colleen M. Husak Jan 1999

The Red Road Approach To Healing As Used In Native American Adolescent Addiction Treatment, Colleen M. Husak

Graduate Research Papers

Traditional treatment programs have not worked with Native Americans. Instead, programs designed to be culturally sensitive are needed (Burn, 1992). In this paper, the author will explore the specific theory of the Red Road approach as used in Native American adolescent substance abuse treatment facilities. The Red Road approach is practical in its psychological application at the same time that it incorporates and encourages the spiritual beliefs which are a major part of the philosophy of most Native Americans (Black Elk & Lyon, 1991). As Black Elk and Lyons (1991) noted, even Native Americans who no longer practice their ancestral …

Book Review: Places Of Quiet Beauty: Parks, Preserves, And Environmentalism, Cornelia F. Mutel

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Places of Quiet Beauty: Parks, Preserves, and Environmentalism. Rebecca Conard. 1997. University of Iowa Press, Iowa City, Iowa. XV + 382 pages. ISBN 0-87745-558-9.

Well administered, parks become much more than havens for birds and flowers, much more than game-preserves, a refuge for life of every sort; even more than a play-ground for all the people ... [The well administered park] shall show us real democracy.

So began one of Iowa's preeminent natural historians, Thomas Macbride, in an early-20th-century (1922) address on the status of Iowa's parks. And so Rebecca Conard begins her late-20th-century analysis of the development of Iowa's …

The Species Richness Of Birds Visiting A Yard Is Influenced By The Feeders/Seeds Present, David Joseph Horn Jan 1999

The Species Richness Of Birds Visiting A Yard Is Influenced By The Feeders/Seeds Present, David Joseph Horn

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Although seed preferences of species that visit bird feeders have been well documented, we know little about feeder/seed combinations most appropriate for attracting highest species richness or increasing abundance of individual species. I studied how the species composition of birds visiting a feeding station was influenced by addition of feeders filled with mixed seed, thistle, and suet in a yard that previously contained only a feeder with sunflower seeds. Addition of a seed mixture consisting of hulled sunflower, hulled peanuts, hulled millet, and hulled "tree" nuts in an elevated platform feeder increased species richness and total number of birds visiting …

The Habitat And Distribution Of The Stinkpot, Sternotherus Odoratus, In Iowa, Kristi K. Sutton, James L. Christiansen Jan 1999

The Habitat And Distribution Of The Stinkpot, Sternotherus Odoratus, In Iowa, Kristi K. Sutton, James L. Christiansen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Twenty years of study have shown that the stinkpot, Sternotherus odoratus and the Illinois mud turtle (Kinosternon flavescens spooneri) occur in Iowa primarily in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. Even though the turtles are found within a kilometer of each other, they are never sympatric. Illinois mud turtles are most often associated with ephemeral ponds and soils of nearly pure sand (Sparta sand and Chelsea loamy fine sand), whereas stinkpots inhabit permanent water, often fed by cold springs, and are limited to sandy, loamy soils (Aquolls and Perks sandy loam). Even though several new localities have been discovered for stinkpots, population …

The publication of the Tallgrass Restoration Handbook is an enormous step in the right direction for people who have already learned to appreciate and admire the beauty and utility of prairies and who now want to roll up their sleeves and begin the restoration of their own bit of tallgrass prairie. All of this volume excluding the first two introductory chapters (Part I) is dedicated to the practical aspects of prairie restoration.

A Municipal Inventory And Evaluation Of Natural Areas: History And Methodology, William R. Norris, Donald R. Farrar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

An inventory of natural areas in the vicinity of Ames, Iowa was conducted (1990-1994) in response to conflicts arising when significant natural areas were encountered on lands approved for development by the City of Ames (Iowa) Planning Office. Methods for objective evaluation of woodland and prairie quality were developed for use during the inventory. The woodland method is based on four components: I) Diversity of expected species, H) Structure of canopy and understory layers, III) Fidelity of species to the habitat and IV) absence of Introduced Species. Rules are explicitly stated for the scoring of each component for both the …
