China: Unfulfilled Promise, Matthew Gernes Apr 2001

China: Unfulfilled Promise, Matthew Gernes

Major Themes in Economics

At the turn of the first millennium A.D. the Chinese empire was perhaps the most technologically and economically advanced civilization on the planet. Economic historians continue to wonder why China stopped progressing along a path which seemed to promise an industrial revolution similar to that experienced by the West. This paper examines how the social and political institutions which made pre-industrial China different from Europe may have prevented such a revolution from happening. The imperial bureaucracy, Confucian philosophy and the centralized nature of the empire all played a role in preventing China from escaping the pre-modern world until the 20th …

Medical Relief After An Unnatural Disaster: How International Health Care Providers May Prove Counter-Productive To Recovery, Maureen Mccue Jan 2001

Medical Relief After An Unnatural Disaster: How International Health Care Providers May Prove Counter-Productive To Recovery, Maureen Mccue

International Journal of Global Health

Equally severe natural disasters that hit equally populous areas produce vastly different impacts and outcomes depending on preexisting political and economic conditions. International relief organizations and civil defense disaster response teams employ effective life saving protocols in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. However, there is little information that addresses the ongoing needs or assesses appropriate responses to the persistent hardships and ill health remaining months after a disastrous event hits an impoverished nation. This article relates the experience of27 volunteer health care workers who provided relief care to Nicaraguan victims of Hurricane Mitch three months after the event. Issues …

Play Therapy, Melissa M. Sitzmann Jan 2001

Play Therapy, Melissa M. Sitzmann

Graduate Research Papers

Play therapy is a current trend in school and mental health counseling that takes into account the importance of play for a child's self -expression. It is primarily used with children ranging from three to ten years in age (Knell, 1995). Play therapy is not a theory that stands alone; counselors utilizing play therapy draw from their personal theoretical orientation and blend it with play as the primary means of communication (Cochran, 1996).

The purpose of this paper is to describe play therapy skills. In addition, two theories of play therapy that could be implemented in a school setting will …

Profitability Of Crop Rotations In Iowa In A Stress Environment, Derrick N. Exner, R. M. Cruse Jan 2001

Profitability Of Crop Rotations In Iowa In A Stress Environment, Derrick N. Exner, R. M. Cruse

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Small grains crops have traditionally been included in Midwestern cropping systems, but their use is restricted by uncertain yields, poor prices, and lack of on-farm uses in operations without livestock. We compared the corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) crop rotation to actual or simulated three-yr rotations at two sites in Iowa between 1986 and 1989. Water was generally more limiting than was nitrogen, which produced minimal response in the corn to which it was applied. April-November precipitation at Nashua, Iowa ranged from 59 to 111 % of average, while at Des Moines, Iowa it was 77% of …

Toxicity Of Cedar River Water And Sediment To Larval Walleye, Todd A. Phillips, Robert C. Summerfelt Jan 2001

Toxicity Of Cedar River Water And Sediment To Larval Walleye, Todd A. Phillips, Robert C. Summerfelt

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Although all anthropogenic stressors affecting aquatic ecosystems have not been isolated, suspended solids, sediment, and pesticides are believed to be major factors in agroecosystems. In the spring of 1998 and 1999, static 48-h tests were conducted to determine the toxicity of water and sediment collected from the Cedar River to prolarval, postlarval I, and postlarval II walleye (Sttzostedzon vitreum). River water and sediment were not more toxic to any larval stage of walleye than reference water and sediment. Cedar River sediments, suspended solids, and water were examined for occurrence of the most common herbicides and insecticides in Iowa. No pesticides …

Personal Perspective On Education, David W. Denhartog Jan 2001

Personal Perspective On Education, David W. Denhartog

Graduate Research Papers

In order to meet the challenges of educational administration, effective leaders must understand the culture of the school, model a passion for excellence, empower the stake holders, have a sense of commitment to a shared vision, and look to the future acting with integrity that heightens the value of character. Being an administrator or manager is not enough. Today's school leaders are shouldered with unending responsibilities that challenge their abilities every day. By utilizing multiple forms of leadership along with empowerment the tasks and goals set by our society can be accomplished.

Introduction, Neil P. Bernstein Jan 2001

Introduction, Neil P. Bernstein

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In this issue, the Iowa Academy of Science honors three of our colleagues who passed away in 2000. Duane Isely, Larry Eilers, and George Knaphus shared many of the same interests. All three were botanists, although George's research on fungi and heterotrophic protistans relegated him to the botany departments only by default. However, more importantly, all three were teachers. I believe that one of the lessons that they would have taught was the need to carefully document present patterns if we are to understand the future. However, many biologists poorly support this concept today.

The Frontier To Innerspace: Arguments Against A Mass-Mediated Culture In The Truman Show, Kimberly A. Powell Jan 2001

The Frontier To Innerspace: Arguments Against A Mass-Mediated Culture In The Truman Show, Kimberly A. Powell

Iowa Journal of Communication

The 1998 film, The Truman Show, is a carefully executed lie that plays on our sense of media manipulation. The central argument within The Truman Show is that of the phoniness of our culture, thus questioning what is right, wrong, truth and lie. This essay examines the development of an anti-media saturation argument through Birth, Family and Resurrection metaphors by following the lead character, Truman Burbank, as he discovers a new frontier of innerspace. Because values are central to analyzing the frontier myth in film, this essay employs Frentz and Rushing's (1978) Social Value Model to discover how lead …

The Role Of Witnessing In Performance Ethnography, Dennis M. Doyle Jan 2001

The Role Of Witnessing In Performance Ethnography, Dennis M. Doyle

Iowa Journal of Communication

Central connections between performance studies theory with current practices in ethnographic fieldwork are giving rise to new ways of understanding all aspects of the performance process. Performance ethnography weaves together traditional methods of theatrical production with emerging new understandings of ethnographic fieldwork. The intersection of methodologies introduces new accountabilities and responsibilities for performance participants. The term witness, for example, may offer explanatory power when discussing the altered roles and accountabilities of participants within performance ethnography. This essay explores different applications of the term witness, placing these applications in dialogue to determine the potential witnessing holds for describing the kind of …

Veneration Of The Virgin Of Crystal In Ritual And Narrative, Kristin B. Valentine, Eugene Valentine Jan 2001

Veneration Of The Virgin Of Crystal In Ritual And Narrative, Kristin B. Valentine, Eugene Valentine

Iowa Journal of Communication

This essay describes and analyzes a ritual and a number of narratives associated with a cultural event in Galicia-a region of Spain that remains largely neglected in ethnographic studies. In the village of Vilanova dos Infantes, there is a religious artifact of considerable interest: a small column of clear glass that contains-suspended vertically in its center-a flat, two-sided image of a woman venerated as the Virgin Mary. Called the "Virgin of Crystal," this object is revered as being of divine origin and possessing the power to work miracles; it plays, therefore, a significant role in the performative lives of the …

Factors Associated With Occurrence And Density Of Wetland Birds In The Prairie Pothole Region Of Iowa, Steve E. Fairbairn, James J. Dinsmore Jan 2001

Factors Associated With Occurrence And Density Of Wetland Birds In The Prairie Pothole Region Of Iowa, Steve E. Fairbairn, James J. Dinsmore

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Wetlands within wetland complexes in northwestern, north-central, and central Iowa were surveyed for bird use in 1997 and 1998. Species occurrence, species richness, and density of nesting species were related to wetland habitat variables. A habitat diversity index measuring the evenness of distribution of the different habitats within a wetland was the best predictor of species richness in both years. The habitat diversity index was also the best predictor of the occurrence of individual species in both 1997 and 1998. Eight of 11 species (7 3%) in 1997 and 13 of 18 species (72%) in 1998 had greater densities in …

Recent Observations Of The Distribution And Status Of Bluntnose Darters And Crystal Darters In Iowa, Melvin C. Bowler Jan 2001

Recent Observations Of The Distribution And Status Of Bluntnose Darters And Crystal Darters In Iowa, Melvin C. Bowler

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The distribution and status of Iowa's fishes were last extensively described in Iowa Fish and Fishing (Harlan et al. 1987). Since then, numerous fish collections have been made in Iowa's interior and bordering rivers and streams. Excluding non-native species, there have been three documented accounts of new fish species distributional records in Iowa since 1987. In this paper, I describe new collections of crystal darter (Crystallaria asprella) and bluntnose darter (Etheostoma chlorosomum) from the Mississippi River. The first documented specimen of C. asprella in Iowa was collected in Pool 11 of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) in 1995. One specimen …

Identification And Distribution Of The Treefrogs Hyla Versicolor And Hyla Chrysoscelis In Iowa, Catherine E. C. Oberfoell, James L. Christiansen Jan 2001

Identification And Distribution Of The Treefrogs Hyla Versicolor And Hyla Chrysoscelis In Iowa, Catherine E. C. Oberfoell, James L. Christiansen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Historically, the tetraploid and diploid species pair of gray treefrogs, Hyla versicolor and Hyla chrysoscelis, were mapped collectively in Iowa because no macroscopic morphological characteristics useful in recognizing the two species had been found. The present study reports identification and separation of the species by counts of nucleoli in the palpebral membrane of the eye and by measurement of scanning electron micrographs of toepad epithelial projections. Subsequent morphometric data confirm that the two species are morphologically distinct in Iowa but that overlap in characters continues to make macroscopic morphology unreliable for identifying individuals. H. chrysoscelis is distributed sporadically though all …

Public Sphere In Cyberspace?, Mark D. Johns Jan 2001

Public Sphere In Cyberspace?, Mark D. Johns

Iowa Journal of Communication

According to Jurgen Habermas, a public sphere is a site where individuals come together to freely and openly express their opinions regarding matters of common interest. Informed by Habermas' discussion, the author investigated the social farms generated in computer-mediated communication and examined whether the social structures in cyberspace are conducive to the formation of a public sphere. Communication among the members of three Internet newsgroups were examined to locate the formal features of the social relationships constructed in this cyberspace. The conclusion is that while a public sphere may be possible, cyberspace often falls short of fulfilling its potential for …

Low-Saturated-Fat Soybean Oil Reduces Saturated Fat In School Menus, J. M. Mahnken, S. F. Lutz, C. J. Anders, W. R. Fehr Jan 2001

Low-Saturated-Fat Soybean Oil Reduces Saturated Fat In School Menus, J. M. Mahnken, S. F. Lutz, C. J. Anders, W. R. Fehr

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

This study evaluated the impact of using low-saturated-fat soybean {Glycine max (L.) Merr.} oil on the saturated fat content of school menus. Seventy-six weekly menus were obtained from the Iowa Department of Education during School Meals Initiative reviews for the 1996-1997 school year. Three modifications were performed on school menus using the Nuttikids computer program: Low-saturated- fat (LSF) soybean oil replaced traditional vegetable oil in menu items; LSF soybean oil was substituted for traditional vegetable oil, solid fats, and egg yolks in recipes; and a menu simulation was conducted where oils and solid fats used in menu items were …
