A Comparison Of Land Use And Nonpoint Source Pollution In The Cedar River Tributaries In Iowa, Chad Levi Fields Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Land Use And Nonpoint Source Pollution In The Cedar River Tributaries In Iowa, Chad Levi Fields

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A comparative water analysis on major Cedar River tributaries was conducted to determine nutrient and sediment concentration, nutrient loads, and watershed land use during the spring and summer of 2002. The Cedar River watershed is located on a primarily agricultural land, and has a drainage area of20,242 km2. The watershed extends from southern Minnesota to southeastern Iowa, where it joins the Iowa River which subsequently flows into the Mississippi River. Past studies have concluded that the Cedar River contributes much of the nutrients entering the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. These nutrients then contribute to the zone of …

Sport Nutrition Education: A Study Of Nutritional Practices And Knowledge Among Mississippi Valley Conference High School Athletic Programs In The State Of Iowa, Sara Lynn Hallgren

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

High school athletes are becoming more involved in nutritional supplementation and including foods in their diet high in fat and sugar through increased consumption of "convenience foods" and fast-food. These poor eating behaviors and use of supplementation are reasons why it is becoming increasingly important to bring sport nutrition education to the high school level. It is imperative these athletes receive appropriate education needed to make educated choices about food selections to meet nutritional needs for their sport and development. The purpose of this study is to determine the status of sport nutrition education among Mississippi Valley Conference high school …

Dig Deep: From Down Under, So Shall I Emerge, Lori Ann Dale Jan 2004

Dig Deep: From Down Under, So Shall I Emerge, Lori Ann Dale

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"Dig Deep: From Down Under So Shall I Emerge" is a celebration of who I am; culturally, spiritually, and historically. This body of ceramic sculptures, inclusive of five connected works, has allowed me to better understand myself, my surroundings, and my purpose in life. Through talking to other African American women my age, I have come to realize we are all dealing with similar feelings of displacement. Some stereotypes rooted in oppression have depicted Black Women as being loud angry and having negative attitudes. So being aware of such stereotypes, in the presence of other cultures many Black Women find …

American Indian Women Warriors: Their Perceptions Of Success Factors In Graduate School, Loretta Dominquez Jan 2004

American Indian Women Warriors: Their Perceptions Of Success Factors In Graduate School, Loretta Dominquez

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Higher education is not just a Black and White issue, but also an issue regarding First Nations people (i.e., American Indian/Native American and Alaskan Indians). American Indians throughout history in the U.S. have been neglected in all levels of education. American Indian women in graduate programs have experienced prejudices, isolation, and lack of support, guidance, or mentoring from the faculty, staff, or administration in graduate programs. An ethnographic qualitative research of personal interviews was the methodology chosen to grasp the personal perceptions of four American Indian woman warriors in professional higher educational positions. They shared their experiences of their success …

Determining Criminal Motive Using Deductive Profiling: A Feasibility Study, Kelly J. Dupont Jan 2004

Determining Criminal Motive Using Deductive Profiling: A Feasibility Study, Kelly J. Dupont

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In recent years criminal profiling has gained increasing popularity and attention as a result of media and law enforcement interest. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the field is lacking in essential empirical support. The FBI's Crime Classification Manual, used to train FBI profilers, states in its opening pages that the information provided in the manual is not empirically derived; rather it is based on the collective opinion of those with experience in law enforcement (Douglas, Burgess, & Burgess, 1992). An area particularly in need of research is the relationship between motive and criminal behavior. Understanding motive can be a …

Modeling And Measuring The Dispersion Of Odors From Hog Confinements, François Béra Jan 2004

Modeling And Measuring The Dispersion Of Odors From Hog Confinements, François Béra

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A comparison was made between predicted and measured odor concentration downwind of two hog finishing confinements. Two Gaussian dispersion models, STINK.BAK and AERMOD, were used. The experimental cases examined odor emanating from a mechanically-ventilated facility and a curtain-sided facility during summer 2003. A field olfactometer was used to measure odor concentration. The odor concentrations served as input to STINK.BAK, which then estimated the odor emission rate from the confinement. AERMOD used this emission rate and other meteorological data to predict the peak concentration of odor around the confinement over the sampling hour. The calculated odor emission rates are slightly higher …

Comparison Study Of Cooling Fins And Chills Effectiveness In Aluminum Sand Mold Casting, Vladimir E. Kouznetsov May 2003

Comparison Study Of Cooling Fins And Chills Effectiveness In Aluminum Sand Mold Casting, Vladimir E. Kouznetsov

Graduate Research Papers

Besides proper design of gating and risering systems, there are several methods used to control and modify solidification behavior of cast alloys. Within these methods, the most widely used are local cooling aids employing cooling fins (thin segments attached to problematic areas of casting) or external chills (metal inserts placed into mold walls to accelerate heat withdrawing from potential hot spot). The later helps to promote directional solidification when traditional methods are not possible to use due to limitations related to the casting design. Despite relatively wide application in aluminum foundries, there are no specific recommendations on cooling aids parameters …

The Risks Associated With Agriculture: A Review, Danelle Bickett-Weddle Jan 2003

The Risks Associated With Agriculture: A Review, Danelle Bickett-Weddle

International Journal of Global Health

Agriculture dates back to the first recorded civilizations in Mesopotamia (currently known as Iraq) in 8000 B.C. and is defined as "the science, art, or practice of cultivating the soil, producing crops, and raising livestock and in varying degrees the preparation and marketing of the resulting products." (1) It is a worldwide craft and agriculture is thought to be one of the three most hazardous occupations in the United States. There has been data collection regarding farm size, crops or animals produced and income generated for more than 150 years. A farm includes any place that sells or produces, or …

Effects Of Maternal Depression On Youth Adjustment, Jennifer Alexander Jan 2003

Effects Of Maternal Depression On Youth Adjustment, Jennifer Alexander

Graduate Research Papers

Depressive disorders are chronic illnesses affecting women and their families for extended periods of time. This paper summarizes research related to the effects of maternal depression on children's short and long term adjustment. Children of depressed mothers are at risk for internalizing and externalizing disorders. Genetics account for a small portion of these problems. Since depressed mothers tend to withdraw or show intrusive, hostile behaviors with their children, parent-child interaction problems account for the majority of youth adjustment problems, particularly when mothers' depression is severe, occurs during infancy, is chronic, and is paired with high family conflict or separation. Individual …

Self-Esteem : Cognitive Therapy And Creative Interventions, Barbara J. Fay Jan 2003

Self-Esteem : Cognitive Therapy And Creative Interventions, Barbara J. Fay

Graduate Research Papers

Maladaptive mechanisms due to an impoverished self-esteem have often been seen as part of dual-diagnosis as well as an underlying component in most presenting problems. Since Cognitive Therapy has had excellent results in addressing and elevating most self-esteem issues, a variety of cognitive interventions were explored. However, the Cognitive Therapy framework does not always accommodate specific client needs such as an inability to verbalize due to trauma, intellectual or immaturity levels of cognition as well as cultural or language barriers. Therefore, a multi-modal approach was implemented to provide a framework to integrate Cognitive Therapy and creative interventions. Strengths and weaknesses …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Lucy M. Evans Jan 2003

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Lucy M. Evans

Graduate Research Papers

I believe that every child born into the world deserves, as their unalienable right, an equal opportunity to a quality education as promised by the United States Congress in 1981. This promise can only be accomplished by maintaining the belief that every child can and will learn if given the opportunity. I believe that within the mind of a child is a natural curiosity about this great world that can through proper nurturing continue throughout their lives.

The atmosphere in the school community should be one of caring and acceptance. Plants and animals cannot grow without proper care and nourishment …

Supporting Grieving Students In Schools, Erin E. Bartholomew Jan 2003

Supporting Grieving Students In Schools, Erin E. Bartholomew

Graduate Research Papers

It is estimated that one out of six children will lose a parent by eighteen (Dutton, 1999). Ninety percent of junior and seniors in high school have experienced loss associated with death, forty percent the death of a friend, and twenty percent have witnessed a death (Dutton, 1999). Children and adolescents are exposed to grief, but they are not equipped to handle the grief process. This paper discusses the many experiences children and adolescents go through when dealing with a loss. It discusses how these experiences are different than that of adults and why it is so important to acknowledge …
