There are several different theoretical approaches, but the researcher chose to focus on Adlerian Play Therapy, Client-Centered Play Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Play Therapy, and Psychodynamic Play Therapy. The paper considers the best location to implement play techniques, by urging the counselor to be aware of the setting's location within the building, ease of cleaning, available space, and …

The Role Of The Insecticide Ddt In Breast Cancer, Jared D. Taylor Jan 2005

The Role Of The Insecticide Ddt In Breast Cancer, Jared D. Taylor

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer among black and white females, with approximately 211,000 new cases expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2004 (1). More importantly, incidence has been increasing. Age-adjusted breast cancer incidence in U.S. females rose from the 88.6 per 100,000 in the early 1970s to 109.8 in the early 1990s (2). This represents a 24 percent increase over that time. This trend is only partially explained by the known risk factors for breast cancer, including advancing age, early menarche, late menopause, late age at first parturition and family history. Therefore, researchers have …

The Unionid Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of Missouri River Floodplain Ditches In Fremont County Southwestern Iowa And Atchison And Holt Counties Northwestern Missouri, Ellet Hoke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A survey of ditches in the Missouri River floodplain in southwestern Iowa and northwestern Missouri resulted in the recovery of nine unionid mollusk species. The floodplain ditches may provide valuable habitat for mussels in a region that has suffered a tremendous decrease in productive aquatic habitats over the past sixty-eight years. Additional survey activity is needed to determine the complete inventory of unionid mollusks in the area.

Threatened By Industry, Saved By Science: Mussel Propagation At The Fairport Biological Laboratory, James Pritchard Jan 2005

Threatened By Industry, Saved By Science: Mussel Propagation At The Fairport Biological Laboratory, James Pritchard

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

During the 1890s, people on the Mississippi River exploited mussel populations to support a thriving button industry. Within a brief time, they noticed significant declines in mussel populations, and called on the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries to save the resource. This paper discusses mussel propagation studies, techniques, and activities carried on in association with the Fairport Biological Laboratory (Iowa) from about 1908 to 1932. While scientists developed sophisticated techniques and had success in mussel propagation, changing habitat conditions in the river (caused mainly by pollution and dam construction) meant limited success in rescuing mussel stocks, while the introduction of plastic …

Using Learning Cycles To Introduce The Nature Of Science, Sally Coleman

Graduate Research Papers

This unit is designed to reach a portion of our student population that struggles with science. The course title is General Biology. It was designed to be an alternative to more difficult science classes. Students at our school are required to have three years of science to graduate. This class was added to our curriculum to be an alternative to students who probably will not be going to college and just need the science credits to graduate. Most of the students who take this class do not like science and they believe that they cannot "do" science.

A Compilation Of Homologous Cancer-Related Genes In Humans And Dogs, Julie Susan Brown

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this study was to find out if spontaneously arising point mutations occurred in canine e-kit and if these mutations contributed to the development of mast cell tumors in dogs. Specimens were collected from 11 dogs after tumors had been surgically removed or the dog had died. The e-kit DNA was amplified using PCR, and the previously established point mutations were searched for (London et al., 1999). The point mutations found in human mast cell lines were not detected in the canine e-kit DNA, but new mutations were observed. These new mutations, observed in 50% of the tumors, …

Restoring Image In Party Schools, Rod Pritchard Jan 2005

Restoring Image In Party Schools, Rod Pritchard

Iowa Journal of Communication

College ranking guides have gained prominence and popularity in recent years as consumer-driven parents seek to find the best educational institutions for their children. While The Princeton Review's The Best Colleges publication has emerged as a popular college guide, at least one designation in the annual college guidebook, "Party Schools" (Franek et al., 2004, p. 43), creates a negative image for the colleges and universities listed. In an effort to protect the reputation of these institutions, research indicates that image restoration management techniques are widely implemented. The use of the defensive image restoration strategies is the most common, but the …

Rethinking Life Online: The Interactional Self As A Theory For Internet-Mediated Communication, Marcelo Vieta Jan 2005

Rethinking Life Online: The Interactional Self As A Theory For Internet-Mediated Communication, Marcelo Vieta

Iowa Journal of Communication

Informed by the philosophies of Martin Heidegger, George Herbert Mead, and Alfred Schutz, this paper presents an emerging concept called the interactional self to illustrate how there are no clear phenomenological distinctions between the so-called "virtual world" and the dichotomously positioned "real world" in Internet-mediated communication settings. Ultimately, the paper shows how the philosophies of human experience can help the communication researcher better conceptualize the tight intermingling of the online with the offline, users' phenomenologically-rooted use-contexts, performative practices, and intersubjective life-world experiences in Internet-mediated sociability.
