Virtual Blasting System For Removal Of Coating And/Or Rust From A Virtual Surface, Michael Bolick, Chris Lampe, Jason Ebensberger, Jeremiah Treloar, Rick Klein, Eric Conrad Peterson, Chad Jason Zalkin

Patents (University of Northern Iowa)

A computer simulation and virtual reality system simulates the use of a blasting nozzle to remove one or more coatings and/or rust from a virtual surface. The user operates an electronic controller in the form of a blasting nozzle that outputs a signal indicating whether the blasting nozzle controller is in an "on" position or in an "off" position. The system also has a motion tracking system that tracks the position and orientation of the blasting nozzle controller with respect to the virtual surface defined on the display screen. Simulation software in a computer generates virtual blast pattern data, and …

U.S. Animal Agriculture Policy: Problems And Solutions, Steven Mischel Apr 2010

U.S. Animal Agriculture Policy: Problems And Solutions, Steven Mischel

Major Themes in Economics

The current structure of the American animal agriculture industry is fraught with problems. The externalities from it are disproportionately felt by a limited group of individuals who lack political and economic influence. Far from taxing or constraining animal agriculture, The U.S. Government subsidizes its worst practices through a variety of direct and indirect methods. This paper recommends four specific reforms in agriculture policy that will level the playing field for small farmers and push the industry toward greater economic efficiency.

Can The ‘Fat Tax’ Carry Its Weight?, Carl Bakker Apr 2010

Can The ‘Fat Tax’ Carry Its Weight?, Carl Bakker

Major Themes in Economics

Obesity is a rising problem in America and is blamed for externalities such as increasing health care costs. Some have proposed taxes on “unhealthy” foods so as to internalize the externalities and to generate revenue to subsidize “healthy” foods. I examine several such proposals and conclude that taxes based on perceived externalities from the obese are not the best options. Other solutions such as increasing awareness and nutritional programs would be better.

Keeping It Green: Using A Compost To Improve Student Learning, Spencer Mesick, Kayla Hendrix Jan 2010

Keeping It Green: Using A Compost To Improve Student Learning, Spencer Mesick, Kayla Hendrix

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This article discusses ways in which composting might be used to mentally engage students with science content. Incorporating a compost pile in the classroom provides ample connections to future science content (e.g., conditions necessary for the life of organisms in a well running aerobic compost, what decomposition means in a biological sense, aerobic vs. anaerobic decomposition, food webs, respiration, recycling of nutrients, landfill issues, etc.). Also, reflecting the complexities of effective science teaching, the article makes clear the crucial role of the teacher during the activity. The science content and activity addressed in this article are appropriate for 9th - …

“Space Exploration & Travel”: A Curricular Guide For High School Earth & Space Sciences, Amy Jo Jacobson

Graduate Research Papers

The unit examines space exploration and travel as one facet of astronomy as part of the Earth Science curriculum in a high school. In cooperative learning groups, the students work on group and independent hands-on activities. A culminating assessment project conducted in cooperative learning groups utilizes student technology skills. One intent of this unit is to help students understand the importance of asking the correct questions and thinking for themselves to solve problems through the various activities and lesson plans provided in this outline.

Exploring Behavior Disorders In Children And Adolescents, Melissa Berger Jan 2010

Exploring Behavior Disorders In Children And Adolescents, Melissa Berger

Graduate Research Papers

Over the last century more and more children and adolescents have been diagnosed with behavior disorders. While problematic behaviors in adolescents have always been seen in and out of schools, it has only been in the last century that psychologists have looked deeper into the root of these behaviors. The term "behavior disorders" can in fact encompass a number of different disorders seen among both children and adolescents. The three specific disorders discussed in this paper will be attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHA), conduct disorder (CD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). A great deal of the time, children exhibiting these types of …

How Does Water Become Polluted? Helping Elementary Students Learn How To Prevent Pollution, Kelsey Bentzinger, Lindsey Thilges, Ken Vacek Jan 2010

How Does Water Become Polluted? Helping Elementary Students Learn How To Prevent Pollution, Kelsey Bentzinger, Lindsey Thilges, Ken Vacek

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Through making observations of mixing various items with water, students develop ideas about how pollution happens. The cumulative effect of what happens when many people add only “a little something” to the water provides students with a concrete representation of what can happen in their own communities. Students complete the lesson by determining what they can do to prevent pollution from happening in their own communities. This activity promotes National Science Education Content Standards A, B, and F, and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
