Enhanced Hydrocarbon Recovery In Tight And Shale Reservoirs Using Surfactants And Supercritical Co2, Shaojie Zhang Jan 2020

Enhanced Hydrocarbon Recovery In Tight And Shale Reservoirs Using Surfactants And Supercritical Co2, Shaojie Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

The tight and shale oil reservoirs have been becoming increasingly important energy resources. However, the flow and storage mechanisms of oil in tight and shale reservoirs are still ambiguous. The inorganic pores, organic pores, and kerogen skeleton in shale oil reservoirs can store hydrocarbons. Besides, the oil recovery of tight and shale oil reservoirs is extremely low even with the assistance of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. The surfactants and CO2 are commonly used to enhance the oil recovery in tight and shale reservoirs. A comprehensive review of CO2 and surfactants EOR is shown in Chapter Ⅱ.

The spontaneous imbibition …

A New Approach To Measure Unique Spectral Response Characteristics For Irregularly Shaped Photovoltaic Arrays, Anthony Rafael Peters Jan 2020

A New Approach To Measure Unique Spectral Response Characteristics For Irregularly Shaped Photovoltaic Arrays, Anthony Rafael Peters

Theses and Dissertations

Current photovoltaic (PV) panel test methods do not provide efficient and repeatable standardization, which can result in inconsistent results. Test requirements for individual PV cells are promulgated by standard test conditions (STC), but do not directly translate to new array or panel designs, particularly for panels that are irregularly shaped and used for different applications. Optimal angles that yield the most power delivery from the PV device when integrated into a panel are achieved by manipulating the panel’s orientation via single or dual axis tracking (e.g., maximum power point tracking). In applications where PV is intended to be integrated into …

A Preliminary Study Of Leo To Geo Transfers For Inclination Changes Using Libration Point Orbits, John Shepard Jan 2020

A Preliminary Study Of Leo To Geo Transfers For Inclination Changes Using Libration Point Orbits, John Shepard

Theses and Dissertations

The required change in velocity for a satellite to change inclination has prompted studies of efficient orbital transfers. Modeling the motion of a spacecraft by including the gravitational forces associated with the Sun, Earth, and Moon has historically proven effective in obtaining new scientific knowledge. In modeling the motion of satellites, the circular restricted three body problem (CR3BP) demonstrates the interactions from two primary bodies and a satellite. The dynamics created about the equilibrium points within the CR3BP can be used to construct low-energy transfers. The invariant manifolds of the libration point orbits (LPO) can be used to create an …

Surfactant-Nanoparticle Augmented Systems For Enhanced Oil Recovery: Formula Development And Evaluation, Xun Zhong Jan 2020

Surfactant-Nanoparticle Augmented Systems For Enhanced Oil Recovery: Formula Development And Evaluation, Xun Zhong

Theses and Dissertations

Surfactant enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology has received much attraction due to its excellent capability to increase the displacement efficiency by altering the wettability, lowering the oil-water interfacial tension and mobilizing the remaining oil. However, surfactant systems are widely acknowledged to have either low or high adsorption on solid (rock/clay/sediment) surfaces. The adsorption density can be affected by adsorbents, surfactant structure, experimental conditions and some other factors. Also, the driving forces for adsorption vary with different surfactants types. Generally speaking, electrostatic interactions are more prominent for anionic, cationic and zwitterionic surfactants, while chemical interactions are more common for nonionic surfactants. …

Redirected Mindset: A Guide To A More Holistic Practice In Physical Rehabilitation, Sara Anderson, Ashley Malina Jan 2020

Redirected Mindset: A Guide To A More Holistic Practice In Physical Rehabilitation, Sara Anderson, Ashley Malina

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Problem: Current practice is that the occupational therapists’ identity has become rooted in the practice setting they are working in versus the core values and beliefs of the profession. Despite the core values and beliefs of the profession, occupational therapists have pigeon-holed themselves as physical or mental health practitioners (Terry & Westcott, 2012). This results in restricted assessments and interventions that are not holistic and often not occupation based (Terry & Westcott, 2012). “Occupational therapy practitioners need to have an understanding of the physical, emotional, and psychosocial aspects of recovery from physical disability to address potential obstacles to their patient’s …

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Title: Occupational Therapy: Addressing Mental Health Needs in Permanent Supportive Housing

Introduction: The availability and implementation of occupational therapy services in supportive housing are limited. According to Schultheis (2018), out of the 550,000 people in America who experienced homelessness on a given night in 2017, 1 in 5 had a mental illness. Choy-Brown, Padgett, Smith, and Tiderington (2016) found that 92% of individuals with mental illness stated that secure housing was the foundation of their recovery. When housing acts as a cornerstone to recovery, it is important, as occupational therapists, to capitalize on the opportunity and resources stable housing provides …

Using Geothermal Energy To Reduce Oil Production Costs, Will Gosnold, Mark Ballesteros, Dongmei Wang, Josh Crowell Jan 2020

Using Geothermal Energy To Reduce Oil Production Costs, Will Gosnold, Mark Ballesteros, Dongmei Wang, Josh Crowell

Geology and Geological Engineering Faculty Publications

The economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the oil industry has been devastating. The decline in demand and price collapse have been particularly disruptive for shale oil extraction which is inherently more expensive than conventional operations. Survival and continuing operations will depend partly on reducing operating costs, and a ubiquitous and substantial cost in oil production is electrical power used primarily for pumping the wells. The Bakken in North Dakota play is particularly vulnerable because there is not an adequate electrical grid in the region. Many Bakken fields rely on generators burning propane, gasoline or diesel fuel at costs …

Comparative Scoping Study Report For The Extraction Of Microalgae Oils From Two Subspecies Of Chlorella Vulgaris, Jasmine Kreft, Eric Moe, Nicholas Garcia, Andrew Ross, Wayne Seames

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The production of microalgae as a fatty acid oil resource for use in biofuels production is a widespread research topic at the lab scale. Microalgae contain a higher lipid content on a dry-weight basis compared to oilseeds such as soybeans. Additionally, the growth and cultivation cycle of microalgae is 15 days, in comparison to soybeans, for which the cycle occurs once or twice annually. However, to date, it has been uneconomical to produce microalgae oils in a world-scale facility due to limitations in cultivating microalgae at commercial scales. Recent developments suggest that the use of heterotrophic microalgae may be economically …

Electron Beam Irradiation As A Potential Lipid Decontamination Technique For Life Detection Instruments, Denise Kathleen Buckner Jan 2020

Electron Beam Irradiation As A Potential Lipid Decontamination Technique For Life Detection Instruments, Denise Kathleen Buckner

Theses and Dissertations

In the search for extraterrestrial life, identification of molecular biosignatures is a key technique. Lipids are important molecular biosignatures: they are ubiquitous to terrestrial life, survive for billions of years in the geologic record, can form biotically and abiotically (bearing molecular features indicating biogenicity), and are detected throughout the Solar System. Lipid-based life detection instruments require stringent contamination control to prevent false positives, but traditional decontamination techniques are unlikely to sufficiently remove lipid contamination without compromising instrument materials. This thesis investigates Electron Beam Irradiation (EBI) as a potential decontamination technique; five representative lipid standards, including palmitic acid, oleic acid, heneicosane, …

On The Potential Of Lignin As A Sintering Aid And Binder For Designing Porous Foams, Grant Christian Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

Lignin, as an abundant source of bio-renewable material, has been a subject of investigation for many years. Due to its chemically heterogenous and recalcitrant nature, 98% of the material is discarded as waste [3]. Laboratory groups have been exploring lignin’s potential as a value-added ingredient to promote biocompatibility, biodegradation, and substitute toxic, petroleum-based materials [4,6]. In our laboratory, lignin has been utilized as precursor for carbon foam, yielding highly porous structures after pyrolysis [5], and has also been shown to be compatible with other bio-waste materials [8]. The next stage of research focusses on controlled additions of Cu or Distiller’s …

The Conversion Of Carbohydrates From Microalgae And Corn Stover Into Building Block Chemical Acids, Andrew J. Kohler Jan 2020

The Conversion Of Carbohydrates From Microalgae And Corn Stover Into Building Block Chemical Acids, Andrew J. Kohler

Theses and Dissertations

Depletion of petroleum-based resources requires the development of high-valued chemicals from renewable sources. Previous work at the University of North Dakota demonstrated that four building block chemical acids, namely lactic, levulinic, acetic, and formic acids, can be generated by transforming cellulose into glucose followed the catalytic decomposition into the target acids. The most important of these chemicals is lactic acid, which can be used as a building block to produce a variety of biodegradable plastics. Traditional fermentation methods for lactic acid synthesis have proven costly, making it difficult for its subsequent products to compete economically. Alternatively, the use of a …

The Value Of Existential Worlds: Creation And Validation Of A Measure To Explore The Four Existential Worlds, Matthew Robert Rozzi Jan 2020

The Value Of Existential Worlds: Creation And Validation Of A Measure To Explore The Four Existential Worlds, Matthew Robert Rozzi

Theses and Dissertations

The field of counseling psychology is increasingly focused on understanding clients in holistic and non-pathologizing ways. Existential theory provides the four-worlds model for exploring human existence in line with this modern psychological zeitgeist. In this model, humans are understood to exist simultaneously in four “worlds” or “dimensions”: physical (umwelt), social (mitwelt), psychological (eigenwelt), and spiritual/philosophical (uberwelt). This measure construction project is the first known study to examine the personal importance (value) of existing in each world. The Value of Existential Worlds (VEW) was created and psychometrically examined. From the initial 63-items, a shorter (20-item) version was created which demonstrated a …

Case Judgments And Juror Perceptions Of The Stereotypical Defendant, Mariah Sorby Jan 2020

Case Judgments And Juror Perceptions Of The Stereotypical Defendant, Mariah Sorby

Theses and Dissertations

Stereotypes and prejudice have been shown to bias information processing and decision making. There are physical traits that are stereotypically associated with criminals, i.e. tattoos, dark skin-tone, facial untrustworthiness, Afrocentric facial features. These features have been shown to influence verdict decisions and sentencing outcomes. However, there is a paucity of research investigating the additive effects of these features while also considering individual levels of prejudice and egalitarian views. The current research aimed to investigate the effects of several combinations of features on defendant verdict, sentencing, and criminal appearance ratings, rather than assessing the features in isolation, while controlling for prejudice …
