Reducing Structural Barriers In Teacher Preparation: An Improvement Science Study Of A Year-Long Residency Model In Rural Nevada, Brian Zeiszler
Reducing Structural Barriers In Teacher Preparation: An Improvement Science Study Of A Year-Long Residency Model In Rural Nevada, Brian Zeiszler
Theses and Dissertations
Teacher shortages in Nevada, particularly in rural school districts, have been exacerbated by structural barriers within teacher preparation programs that limit candidate progression to graduation and licensure. This study examines the Teacher Education Program (TEP) at Great Basin College (GBC) as a case to identify these barriers and evaluate the implementation of a year-long teacher residency model as a strategy for improvement. Guided by institutional theory, situated learning theory, and constructivism, this study conceptualizes candidate challenges as systemic rather than individual, focusing on how program structures influence access, persistence, and readiness for licensure.Using a qualitative-dominant mixed-methods case study design, Artifact …
Machine Learning For Laminar Heat Transfer In Supercritical Fluids, Luke Holtshouser
Machine Learning For Laminar Heat Transfer In Supercritical Fluids, Luke Holtshouser
Theses and Dissertations
In the last 10 years machine learning has become increasingly more used in the field of fluid dynamics and heat transfer. However, with this increase in activity, gaps still exist with respect to supercritical fluids and laminar flows, where laminar flow in general seems understudied. For supercritical fluids, there are many peculiar studies that are isolated to unique systems or they are obscure enough to include everything but the kitchen sink. This strategy provides no real insights into how the field can make further progress in the utilization of the technology available, or rather build-upon previous knowledge. For this reason, …
Additively Constructed Concrete Culverts (Acc), Eugene Kwabena Assuah-Damoah
Additively Constructed Concrete Culverts (Acc), Eugene Kwabena Assuah-Damoah
Theses and Dissertations
Rural culvert systems in cold regions like North Dakota face rising replacement needs due to aging infrastructure, harsh deterioration, and limited precast supply. Additive construction with concrete (ACC) offers promise but is constrained by proprietary mix designs, limited validation for non-linear geometries such as ring-type pipes, and challenges in reinforcement integration. This study addresses these gaps through three efforts. First, a non-proprietary mix (MIX7, w/c = 0.37) using local materials achieved optimal printability (190–200 mm flow) and 28‑day strengths of 55–60 MPa; full-scale 18‑inch pipes met ASTM C76 Class II/III requirements. Second, literature shows ACC permanent formwork performance depends on …
Engineering Translational Biosensing Tools Forparkinson’S Disease, Mercedes Terry
Engineering Translational Biosensing Tools Forparkinson’S Disease, Mercedes Terry
Theses and Dissertations
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor dysfunction and early cognitive decline. Diagnosis and monitoring remain largely symptom-driven, relying on clinical scales that capture disease only after significant neurodegeneration has occurred. These assessments are inherently subjective, episodic, and insensitive to early-stage pathology, limiting both timely diagnosis and the ability to track disease progression or therapeutic response. The lack of objective, quantitative biomarkers for both molecular pathology and cognitive impairment remains a major barrier to advancing precision medicine approaches in Parkinson’s disease. This dissertation approaches Parkinson’s disease from two complementary fronts: molecular detection of alpha-synuclein pathology and quantitative …

Machine Learning Applications For Numerical Simulation Of Co2 Sequestration, Adeboye Kayode Adeyinka
Machine Learning Applications For Numerical Simulation Of Co2 Sequestration, Adeboye Kayode Adeyinka
Theses and Dissertations
Global CO2 emissions significantly exceed the capacity of planned sequestration projects. Among subsurface storage sites, deep saline aquifers offer the largest theoretical capacity because they occur naturally across most sedimentary basins. However, major geological uncertainties, such as permeability variations and sand continuity, complicate these projects due to sparse well data. Consequently, analyzing CO2 sequestration projects in saline aquifers require robust reservoir simulation which are unfortunately, computationally complex with long runtimes, presenting severe bottlenecks for extensive risk assessment.
Machine learning algorithms can overcome these limitations by drastically reducing computational runtimes, enabling rapid scenario testing and optimization. Despite this potential, existing literature …
Techno-Economic Analysis And Density Functional Theory Modeling Of Hydrogen Fuel Cells With Platinum-Based Catalysts For Effective Deployment In Long-Range Electric Vehicles, Thomas Cheekwang Yap
Techno-Economic Analysis And Density Functional Theory Modeling Of Hydrogen Fuel Cells With Platinum-Based Catalysts For Effective Deployment In Long-Range Electric Vehicles, Thomas Cheekwang Yap
Theses and Dissertations
The transition to sustainable transportation is constrained by carbon emissions and fossil fuel dependence. Hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs), particularly those utilizing platinum-based catalysts, offer high efficiency and suitability for long-range electric vehicles (EVs). However, the high cost and durability limitations of platinum catalysts remain major barriers to large-scale deployment.
This study integrates techno-economic analysis (TEA) with density functional theory (DFT) modeling to evaluate cost–performance trade-offs of platinum-based catalysts for long-range hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. DFT simulations were conducted to assess platinum alloy compositions and oxygen reduction reaction activity. These performance metrics were incorporated into a MATLAB-based TEA framework to quantify …
Open Chromatin-Guided Analysis Of Cell-Free Dna For Inferring Regulatory Landscapes In Cancer Detection, Monitoring, And Therapeutic Response, Sakuntha Devaka Gunarathna
Open Chromatin-Guided Analysis Of Cell-Free Dna For Inferring Regulatory Landscapes In Cancer Detection, Monitoring, And Therapeutic Response, Sakuntha Devaka Gunarathna
Theses and Dissertations
Conventional cancer diagnosis and monitoring rely on imaging and tissue biopsies. Imaging is constrained by resolution, while biopsies are invasive, limited in capturing tumor heterogeneity, and challenging to perform repeatedly over time. Liquid biopsy has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative that enables real-time assessment of tumor-derived material in circulation. Among its components, cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has gained significant attention as a promising biomarker for cancer detection and disease monitoring. However, most current cfDNA approaches rely on mutation- and methylation-based signals, which, while informative, can be limited by low tumor fraction, biological heterogeneity, and reduced sensitivity in early-stage disease. In …

Climate Messages In An Ai-Integrated Experiment: Interpretive Divergence, Policy Support, And A New Resonance Consistency Framework, Jayme Colosimo
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examined how environmental frames—particularly “Mother Earth” and “Mother Nature”—influence public support for climate policy and how these effects differ across demographic groups. Using a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, the study executed a media survey experiment (N = 470) followed by semi-structured expert interviews to assess responses to two primes using a conventional corporate media message, and a message with similar content that was generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Quantitative findings showed that these metaphors generated uneven and sometimes divergent priming effects. Some groups—most notably White male Republicans—reported higher support for environmental policy under the conventional media prime. Under …
Predicting Diversity Gaps In Clinical Trials Using Digital Twin Modeling, Abigail Tubbs
Predicting Diversity Gaps In Clinical Trials Using Digital Twin Modeling, Abigail Tubbs
Theses and Dissertations
Demographic underrepresentation in clinical trials continues to limit the external validity, equity, and generalizability of biomedical evidence. While regulatory reforms have increased the availability of aggregate demographic reporting, most existing approaches assess representation retrospectively, after recruitment has begun, offering limited support for design-stage decision-making. This dissertation presents a digital twin–based framework for prospective assessment of demographic diversity in clinical trials using trial-level metadata. The work integrates three core contributions. First, an open, reproducible, no-code extraction tool was developed to enable bulk retrieval and harmonization of baseline demographic data (race, ethnicity, sex/gender, and age) from ClinicalTrials.gov using National Clinical Trial identifiers. …

Lidar Datasets For Development And Testing Of Preprocessing And Artificial Intelligence Damage Detection Of Alaskan Arctic Roads, Naima Kaabouch, Artificial Intelligence Research Center
Datasets
This data was primarily used for the development and testing of preprocessing and artificial intelligence damage detection algorithms for Alaskan arctic roads. They provide a high-resolution, geospatial scan of almost 95 kilometers of Arctic roadways along the Dalton, Steese, and Nome Highways in Alaska. The data used was collected using a ground vehicle and uncrewed aircraft mounted LiDAR sensors between 2022 and 2024. The dataset provides a spatial resolution exceeding 300 pts/m2 and < 2 cm vertical accuracy with a total data volume just over 16GB. The data is broken into three regions including Nome, Prudhoe Bay, and Yukon. Each region contains multiple datasets representing the reference output for multiple stages of the processing including slicing into 100m segments, segmentation of the surrounding non-road data, and filtering the remaining noise/objects above the roads surface. Damage was also identified, categorized, and labeled within the Nome region due to the extensive damage from Typhoon Merbok.

Acoustic Levitation At Sub-Atmospheric Pressures And Reduced Temperatures: An Approach To Study Ice Crystal And Hypersonic Shockwave Interaction, Imteaz Osmani, David J. Delene, Hallie Boyer Chelmo
Graduate Research Achievement Day Posters
Micrometer-sized atmospheric ice crystals are commonly observed in high-altitude clouds. Inside clouds, they attach in different orientations, producing varied geometries, yet their formation mechanisms remain poorly understood. Their behavior under shock wave conditions remains underexplored due to lack of laboratory techniques capable of producing atmospherically realistic ice in controlled conditions. No experimental data and laboratory techniques exist to date on the interaction between atmospheric ice crystal aggregates and hypersonic shockwaves. To explore realistic atmospheric ice crystals’ thermodynamic and mechanical changes in hypersonic environments, we investigate the formation and behavior of ice crystal aggregates using acoustic levitation that avoids physical contact …

Privacy Preserving Anomaly Detection System For Der Solar Inverters, Tanzim Jim Hassan, Prakash Ranganathan
Graduate Research Achievement Day Posters
Reliable operation of solar inverters depends on maintaining a stable frequency. Recent cyber attacks on solar DERs are concerning and increase the likelihood of such stealthy attacks leading to anomalies in DER. Therefore, a robust anomaly detection system (ADS) is crucial for solar inverters used in distributed energy resources (DERs), enabling timely detection and correction of frequency anomalies. Additionally, preserving data privacy is essential for the security and reliability of the power grid. This paper proposes a privacy-preserving anomaly detection system (PP-ADS) based on a multi-stage hybrid machine learning (MSHML) model specifically designed for solar inverter data in DER environments. …
Aerodynamic Forces In Water And Air With Changing Wing Geometry, Michael Anthony, Carson Running
Aerodynamic Forces In Water And Air With Changing Wing Geometry, Michael Anthony, Carson Running
Mechanical Engineering Student Publications
This paper is an exploration of how the effects of wing geometry on the lift and drag in both air and water. The purpose of these findings is to understand if there exists a foil geometry that would offer the best lift-drag ratio in both fluids. To find the answer, chamber, chord, span, and aspect ratio were adjusted in an attempt to maximize lift and drag. The calculations were done through Matlab and the results are shown through Matlab figures. The Matlab code created shows that symmetric airfoils have the greatest lift to drag ratios due to their lower drag …

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications
This paper covers an aerodynamic analysis of the Boeing Bell V-22 Osprey proprotor blade by utilizing thin-airfoil theory (TAT) and lifting-line theory (LLT). The primary focus is how the coefficient of lift and induced drag respond to changes in the angle of attack of the proprotor blades. The proprotor blade is modeled as a finite wing based on the NACA 63-212 airfoil. The wing has a geometric twist of -35 degrees from root to tip. The theories used to evaluate the blade design are limited by the assumption of incompressible, inviscid flow. The results of the analysis indicate that lift …

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications
This project applies Thin-Airfoil Theory (TAT) and Lifting-Line Theory (LLT) to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of the inverted NACA 8412 airfoil as a single-element rear wing for Formula SAE. The 2D analysis was validated against XFOIL (Re = 480,000), confirming a zero- lift angle of αL=0 = -8.326° and establishing a viscous limit of cl,max ≈ 1.90 at αstall ≈ 13.0°. The 3D LLT model quantified the induced drag (CD,i), demonstrating that the wing's low aspect ratio and rectangular planform reduce efficiency compared to elliptic loading, with the induced drag being the dominant total drag component at high angles of …
